3e is actually my least played version of Shadowrun (unless you include 6e, which I haven't bought), loved each of the editions in their own way, and 3e is extremely well put together.

Will be running SR 4e here full time for my group soon and it's always good to hear discussion and insights into the previous additions, if just for the history of the system and where it's come from!

Good luck, 4e isn't one I played a lot, our group stayed with 3e for a long time, and then 5e came out pretty soon after we started playing 4e, so we transitioned to that. From memory though it was a lot of fun.

This is really helpful, thanks! I have been reading through the 6e material, and while I don’t hate it as much as some (I always go liberal on house rules, agreed on in session 0) I really don’t like what Catalyst did with Edge in 6e. It feels like a botched, over-complicated attempt to accommodate what D&D 5e solves with advantage/disadvantage. 3e seems much tighter and more worth the time of learning and teaching to my players.

There's certain things I like in the more modern versions of Shadowrun (the guesses on future technology in 1989 look pretty outdated now), but the FASA versions were a whole load of fun to play.

3rd edition is good, and has the most updated rules. They took a lot of the sourcebook stuff for 2nd ed and rolled it into 3rd. But I really like the art and style of the 2nd edition book. I find it more engaging and I like the skill web in 2nd ed. Matrix rules for the Dekker are hard to handle just do your best and don't worry too much about it. play it in a way that makes you and the players the most happy and brings the most excitement. I have all the pdfs and I found the 2nd edition online for 16 bucks I am getting nostalgic to run it. Even over 3rd. because I like the Hellblast spell that they removed in 3rd.

In so many ways this was the peak of the FASA era of Shadowrun in most things except presentation, in that 2e and even 1e looked so much nicer. Over the years I've had good times with every edition of Shadowrun, so I can't say many bad things about any of them. Wasn't Hellblast basically just Fireblast? (Blast spell with fire elemental effect?)

@@RPGGamer It was the spell with the most devastating damage, I remember that. I want to play a troupe style game of 2e Shadowrun where we bounce between multiple characters stuck inside the Renraku Arcology Shutdown, an elf go gang getting taken over by the Ancients, Let them play as the corporate types in the boardroom, and of course as the shadowrunners. And have it all interconnect. This seems like a grandiose goal. I don't know if I have the GM skills to pull it off, But thats what I want to run when I am rereading 2e books.

Peak Shadowrun imo, especially in terms of lore. Instead of running away from 80s retrofuturism they shouldve leaaannned in

Good point. I find it amusing that the futuristic games which set things in the early 21st Century, are now alt-history, such as Cyberpunk and Twilight 2000.

Thanks mate! Considering your video of the rules breakdown of second version, the difference i recognize between 3rd and 2nd edition is mainly the dodge skill, which is missing in 2nd. Maybe the other systems for decking and magic have also some changes. Question for me is, which version is easier to learn and easier to teach to new players, when it comes to a decision between 2nd and 3rd edition?

A difficult question for me to answer, as I was coming at it from an angle of having played 2nd Edition for years, so I only had to adapt to 3rd edition, which did tidy up and fix the rules a bit. So I definitely prefer the 3rd Edition rules. But coming in fresh, I really don't know which would be easier to learn. I would hope 3rd edition, but really can't say.

I'd say 3rd edition because of how magic works and you only need one book for that. But as a houserule I would drop Dodge alltogether. It is just to easy to doge a single bullet and also makes magicians irritatingly good at doging bullets because they don't need ther combat pool for magic so they use their pool to doge. So we dropped it. Playing that way for over 20 years now and it is great.
