@@sephirothu1290 This is not true at all. Sufism aka Tasawuff has always been a sunni thing. There was no such thing as Sufism in Shia Islam until a much later period after copying the Sunnis. When the Safavids took over Iran and force converted the Sunni Majority to Shia Islam, the first thing they did was kill all the Sufis as they were all Sunni Muslims. What you can argue now in terms of what Shia sufis do, is a type of cultural appropriation of something that always has been Sunni.

@@zccau2316 Tasawwuf is the inner dimensions of Islam, existed since the beginning. years before the creation of Sunni-Shia denominations. I've visited many different Sufi orders in my life , none of the masters or sufis had such a view on mysticism, seeing it as the invention of Sunni or Shia muslims, or even caring about who copied the Tariqah from where. all they do is serving god and all beings, dedicating themselves to inner practices, and etc. they don't care about the Shia-Sunni thing, historians do. Brother Hasan, this is not a substitute for authentic Islamic scholarship. This is just what it appears to be, a Westerner fascinated with Islam, trying his best to convey information about our religion from a semi-outside perspective. We can use it to further our own understanding of our particular tariqat and approach relations with other sects from a position of knowledge. No one is suggesting we do away with Deoband, Mecca Madina, Najaf, Qom, Al Azhar or Deoband. These are the main centres of Islamic learning. How can our friend here replace them? He is smart enough to know he can never replace them bi Ibnillah.

Thank you for all the good work you're doing on this channel. 🙏💗 I was in Mahan in 2014 and was lucky to go to the Shah Nematollah mosque. I was even luckier to see his "meditation room" which is apparently not open to tourists. That place is forever etched in my memory! And if anyone reading this is planning a trip to Iran, do consider including Kerman (and Mahan, and the Kalouts of Shahdad) in your plans. Won't regret it! 😉

Wow! I feel oddly touched by your presentation here! I love your videos and I was surprised to see this show up on my feed. I am a darvish initiate of the Nimatullahi tariqah and never expected to see anything about our founder and masters in this series. Alhamdulillah! While I'm familiar with most of what you're saying here, your presentation brought perspective and context to it. Excellent work! There might be one little thing that I found oddly off. My experience has been that music does, indeed, play a very important role in our gatherings. Sema is practically a sacrament and the music is unique and amazing. Dr. Nurbakhsh gave us very formal guidelines for our conduct when engaged in Sema. This might be particular to the khanighas of America or something like that, but its been a major feature of our ritual gatherings in my personal experience. That said, I wouldn't expect anyone who hasn't participated in our orders gatherings to be familiar with this, so the oversight is understandable. Again, wonderful job! I'm a fan of your work! Ya Haqq!

This is absolutely false. There is no tasawwuf without Islam, never was. If you take Islam out of the tasawwuf ecquation, you would end up with "something like" stoicism. Stuff like this, uttered mostly by people who know tasawwuf by books or a sheikh without an ijasat, gives tasawwuf a bad rep. There is a concept within tasawwuf which is called "dissolvment of Islam" though - which needs an explenation: an object/thing/concept gets only humanly knowledgable by contrasting it with it's opposit. Now you got two objects, lets call them X and not-X. This is the stage were things begin to be given names, in order to distinguish them. Now if you use the word "Islam" or "deen ul Islam/religion of Islam" you imply that there must be something that is not Islam, or a different religion. This is not possible. Since there is only one God, there is also only one way to serve him (Islam). To keep it short, if you would ask certain Sufi saints which religion they adhere to, they might give an answer such as "I'm a human being". Tasawwuf without islam is fraud.

@@xtremeownage2 It is the other way around, there are no pure Sunni Sufi Orders, because all Sufi Orders originate from the Family of the Prophet, from the Infallible Imams. In essence, true Shi’ism and true Sufism are one and the same, the offspring of Imam Ali (as). It is no wonder that many scholars have begun to discover the Shi’i thoughts expressed in the writings of the greatest “Sunni” Sufi saints, such as Ibn Arabi and Rumi, who are in reality crypto-Shi’ites. “In the circle of existence, the source of life Is Ali In both the worlds, the pursuit and goal Is Ali Had it not ruined the quarter of Faith I would have openly revealed, The One worshiped by all Is Ali.” - Rumi (Shams-i Trabrizi, Quatrain.304)

Indonesian here. Enjoy your video on Sufism so much! Please do take a look at Sufism in Indonesia. You can start with the story of Wali Sanga (The Nine Saints) & Syekh Siti Djenar. To put it simply, Siti Djenar is a rogue sufi saint that confronts the more conservative Wali Sanga. Wali Sanga tried to put down Siti Djenar because his teaching is deemed to be "too iconoclastic & borderline heresy", sometimes Siti Djenar is compared to Al-Hallaj. In the end, one of the Wali Sanga managed to kill Siti Djenar, but no one really knows of how Siti Djenar really died. Some said he attained "Moksha" so no one can find his body, other said his dead body bloomed into beautiful & fragrant flowers, some said lights as bright as sun emanates from his body when his followers tried to bury him. Yes so many version! It's just a single story from the Island of Java and there's a lot more sufi figures from other islands of Indonesia. Like, Hamzah Fansuri & Syekh Abdurrauf Sinkili from Sumatra, and more I recommend Geertz's "Religion of Java", Woodward "Java, Indonesia, and Islam" & Munir Mulkhan "Syekh Siti Jenar" (only avb. In Bahasa Indonesia). Again, thank you so much!

I never got too involved because I don't agree with the worship of Sheikhs, never the less the multi-racial group of Dervishes I met in the tariqah where some of the most sincere, humble, open, kind, friendly, generous, and loving people I have encountered on average, and I have dwelt with several tariqahs, since the mid 1970's. Timur is a strange character to me I read an account of his campaigns and life, he seems to have had one part of his soul in the brutal old mongol nomad culture, and the other his father entrenched in the acknowledgement of the Divine.. And he seems to pay tribute to both sides with equal intensity lol

Also it shouldn't surprise people there are shia sufis, after all you can be either shiite or sunni (don't think there are ibadi sufis that i know of) and there's no issue. In fact there are sufi orders that have both shias and sunnies together.

I would love to see a video on the life and teachings of Sarmad Kashani, his life was interesting to say the least (originally an Arminian Persian speaking Jew, converted to Islam (sufi path) and eventually took up Hinduism near the end of his life). He was also beheaded by Aurangzeb for apparently making his older brother a devoted follower of him!

I've recently discovered this channel and am very impressed with the content and a big part of that is the effort you put into pronouncing the words correctly. Well done young man, one thing has been bothering me about this video though, when you say "shi'i" it really puts me off. I've never heard this word before but could easily infer it's meaning, I wonder though why you use that term instead of "shi'ite"?
