Nice. I started using dagger brushes on my landscape painting in acrylics. Works great for little ripples on a lake. After watching this video I'll try some watercolor with it too.

I have the same brushes. Thank you for this video. I've only seen the brushes used in bold florals with very dark and vibrant colors. I haven't used the brushes in a while, but I think I will give them another go. As always, you have great videos, information and of course paintings.

Steve, yes, you are an amazing artist, teacher, etc, but I need to give a shout out to your fantastic VIDEOS. Conversations with Reese, direct to-the-point intros that don’t get too wordy, great camera angles, sharp editing, your sound quality is always spot-on, and your delightful sense of humor. It’s almost 2:00 AM Eastern, and my M. Graham palette is waiting in the wings along with my dancing daggers and triangles (which I never expected to see you use, but I’m happy you find them useful). They’re quite versatile, as long as you give them room on the dance floor (paper) to move. It’s a bit late to start something tonight, but an intuitive landscape will start tomorrow off right to make up for day one of world watercolor month. Thanks for all of the tips and years of inspiration, Steve!

I tend to reach for my Hansa Medium over the Azo yellow, especially with Dioxazine Purple. I feel like the Azo washes out other colors a bit too much, but maybe that's just me. Sometimes I'll spice up a puddle of Hansa with some Azo to turn it up a bit, and then go at the purple. Permanent Green Pale and Dioxazine is also one of my favorite combos. Gets that neon snap in there.

Something I’ve learned after 2 years of asking people about their colors is that it has little or nothing to do with the colors they use. As long as the general hue is correct and the value is right it comes down to the paint. For example, when I bought Mission Gold paint I noticed how good all the colors worked together and the color I chose was irrelevant. The granulation, vibrancy and separation is what made it look so good. Not the color. It comes down to finding a paint that works for the look you want.

Really gorgeous! (the pigment mixture Steve) I really enjoy 3 different brushes other than the usual and it usually is because of painting florals or just as you said different “mark making”. I am also a pigment watching junky but rather watch you use your paper. It’s expensive!😊

The wedge brush, also known as a triangular brush, is indeed useful for spontaneous, leafy strokes and foliage strokes. I dabbled with it as a botanical brush and found it very useful. I am not a botanical artist but I found it’s sharp tip extremely useful. I used a Jackson’s Silverline triangular brush.

I always love watching you create these kinds of paintings and the music was great as well. I've tried making this type of painting before and my favorite color combination is the set of M. Graham Desert SW 5 colors. I have several sets of their coordinated colors and have fun using them as limited color palettes.

OK, the brushes are impressive but the real joy in this little study is the magical blending of the colours and your amazing transformation of (seemingly) random shapes into a cohesive group of little gems. I’m waxing a little lyrical here, but on a practical note please can you mention the angle of your board each time you tell us about the paper you are using. Most watercolour demos omit this and yet it is so important when using wet into wet. Keep up the great work, you bring joy to our lives!

About 10º to begin with as I add the wet washes. Then I go to about 30º. I'm more concerned with neck fatigue, how well I can see and how the camera sees, so the angle is very personal to each artist. Many watercolorists paint flat.

Thanks for that - I get that you have to work in a position to give us the best view. I am very timid about runs and stuff and am only just getting the hang of controlling those first wet washes. I have some squirrel brushes which I love but they hold soooo much water - thanks for your tutorial on the subject, I now have a big fat wad of old towels at my elbow to dab them on. I am eager to get my new stuff and really get into playing with paint - I am 76 and mastering watercolour is one of my ‘dementia delaying tactics’!

You're welcome here but you may be in the wrong place then. I love this type painting so much. I teach a lot of skills through it and the process has in turn taught me soooo much. It has helped a ton of artists get out their paints and paint without a lot of fuss. Not to mention it's probably the most popular type video on my channel. Saying, "just to put some content on KZfaq" makes no sense to me. There is no "just" about this. The process of not only painting and planning is time consuming but all the editing and production is laborious. And its free content.
