Colin's cruelty was a one off moment of thoughtless weakness. He did not mean for her to hear it. Penelope's cruelty was intentional. She did it just to hurt him. He only spoke to a few people, going along with their locker room talk so that he could help Mondrich, whereas she blasted him to the entire Ton, just because her pride was hurt. So yes, Colin doesn't owe her anything, because what she did is SO much worse, in my opinion. Personally, I can't stand people who gossip, I think it's a really tasteless and trashy thing to do, so I have trouble sympathising with Penelope, anyway. She makes money talking about other people behind their backs, but when she got a taste of her own medicine she threw a fit. Don't dish it out if you can't take it. The fact that she started being less vindictive after Eloise found out shows how desperately she needed accountability. Marina was cruel too, but I think she saw it as tough love, and was also desperately trying to stop Penelope from meddling. As much as I understand Marina's situation, Colin wasn't the one who put her in it, and what she did to him was wrong. But, Penelope could have found a less extreme way to save him, instead she chose to ruin her own cousin out of jealousy and spite. Just like she could have come forward herself to save Eloise, but chose to throw her under the bus instead. And don't forget, she almost destroyed Daphne's prospects (with Anthony's help) to the point that she nearly had to marry Nigel Berbrooke. What did she do to deserve that? Penelope is a dangerous combination of vindictive and naïve, and sometimes it seems like she's so busy feeling sorry for herself that she ends up being thoughtless and cruel towards others.
