Okay, I'm going to say this so that everybody knows. I have read the manga. I still prefer the original adaptation over the way the manga and the new adaptation handled this specific story. Its perfectly fine if you like the new adaptation for being faithful to the manga. This is just my opinion. Glad that so many people can enjoy it.

Me disliking one piece streching one manga chapter for two episodes. Never thought I would want an anime to go slower.

2001: - Anna's introduction and her training got their own episode - Jun's introduction and Lee Pai-Long's backstory got their own episode - Manta's struggle and the fight's resolution got their own episode 2021: - f*ck it, let's put all of that in one single episode

Im pretty sure Jun's plan wasn't supposed to be necessarily advantageous to her. It was just a big flex with her being all "you saw how awesome that movie star was with the nunchuks and cool martial arts shit right? Well now he's gonna pound you down!" Or something like that. It was more a show of confidence rather than strategic planning.

Even though I LOVE Shaman King with all my hearth, this version (so far) is rushed as hell and sometimes, animation looks awful. The last episode, were Silver is introduced, just looks lazy done, awfully animated and just had a nice nostalgic moment when they used the original opening song. I know it's adapting more faithfully the source material, but the characters are not well introduced.

One can only hope the 2nd half of the story isn't going to be as rushed so you could watch the beginning of Shaman King 2001 first and then switch to SK 2021 after the divergence point.

Bottom line is the reboot is being rushed ...it was rebooted just to rectify the original's terrible ending and they are showing that by how they are breezing through it, just to get to their goal...the fact that the opening theme shows yoh's entire team proves they arent interested in allowing us to enjoy the ride. This makes me sad because Shaman King is still in my top 10 😭

The rushing bothers me but not enough to drop it. It feels like they are speed running. Hopefully when the actual tournament starts like the trials and stuff they slow it down a lot. Even if they wanted to speed run they shouldn’t have cut out the important parts like Anna’s training. It kinda takes away from how much Anna wants him to fulfill his dream, without the training it kinda makes Anna seem like she is just there to be his wife and to yell at him. Seeing Anna talk about Yoh’s improvement but not seeing it for yourself throws me off.

I've been making a video series comparing the Manga to both versions of the anime and I've found that while the 2021 version is far more in line with the manga the 2001 series did it's best to build tension and have deeper character moments. And dispite the similarities the 2021 series even cut out moments from the manga as well. Hopefully the new series starts to slow things down when it gets to the part where the original anime diverged from the manga.

I cant lie i enjoyed it, looking forward to the next parts. even though the OG didnt rush the early stages i feel as though once it gets to the tournament it should be paced better if not then that’d be a shame. also was the the only one who could see the dub for every episode except the last?

Finally, I thought I was the only one that didn't like the new anime, I've been called a nostalfag over and over by people who believe this one is better only because it's supposedly "more faithful" to the manga. The thing is we're already on episode 6 or 7 and if it wasn't for the old series and the manga itself, I wouldn't have been able to relate to any of the characters. To be fair, the original anime did improve the first half of the manga on a lot of things. Some examples being Ryu's slow but steady development to being a good guy instead of just changing at once in the manga, Horo horo (Tray) meeting Yoh early to cement their friendship etc etc... Heck, I even prefer some of the decisions they made for the second half. Then again, I just prefer the original anime overall. Welp, the main reason we are here is to see the second half adapted anyways, so lets see. I will miss the road to Dobi village from the original but......I will always have the original for that. All things considered though, I am kinda sad that people are so quick to be apologist for this show. "Oh they are saving the budget for the good parts", what good parts? You mean to tell me that Yoh vs Pai Long wasn't a good part? Yoh vs Lan the first 2 fights weren't worthy? Fuck no! Don't defend this shit! Be critical. Just because it is going to be more "faithful" to the original doesn't mean that you should defend it.

I grew up watching Shaman King 🥺 and I must say this is really sad

I dearly loved the 2001 version, when I first watched it in my teenage years. So.. Nostalgia. And I feel like there is a lot talking in the new version.. combined with the pacing, it seems like the new adaption it's more about straight forward telling than showing. (Which was super important when they built up Yohs and Annas relationship - which I adore - but also every character developement and friendship which was built along the way.. )

I agree that pacing is all over the place and the 2021 remake definitely has the "abridged" vibe to it. What I fear is happening is that they want to just breeze through these early episodes to reach the major plot point during the Shaman Fight where the 2001 anime majorly diverges from the manga; they're making an assumption that this is what the viewers want to see, and while they're not 100% wrong, they still need to make the series overall coherent. I feel Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood did this better.

Unpopular opinion: I def think that this show wants to focus more on the source material of the manga that was cut from the original show. If you've watched HxH or FMAB, you will khow that certain part in the beginning is shortened, so that the parts of the manga that wasn't shown in the original can be shown. Imagine if we were living in 2009 when brotherhoos was on its fifth episode and judged it for being rushed. Brotherhood picked up the pace by episode 18-20. So lets be patient. Also strangely i like this version of Anna more then the original. In the original anime, she seemed very inhumane and inconsiderate, shes not as tough on people in this version, and seems more human. Idk, i really liked what she said in the latest episode when Manta criticized that Yoh is too lazy to be shaman king. It made me understand why Anna was so upset when she saw Yoh beat up in the hospital. She really does care for him, and wants him to achive the freedom of choice one gets after becomming Shaman king ( In yohs case, he wants to be lazy lol) But she needs to be tough on him so he understands the weight it takes to become Shaman king. I'm happy to know that I'm not the only one who though episode 3 was trash. Me and my sister grew up with the original anime dubbed in Tagalog, and we both thought that the third episode is missing something.

Agreed with everything! I was very hopeful in the beginning, but I instead decided to just watch the 2001 anime all the way through and even read the manga in the meantime. I liked that the original, even though it didn't stay true to the manga, added actual episodes that gave meaning to the characters and fun tidbits such as Ryu singing on their way to Izumo with Manta (heck, the Lee Pai Long movie was actually in Chinese) and several surprise gags. All of that gave the 2001 adaptation quite a nice personality, to be fair. I keep thinking I could brush the pacing of 2021 aside since I know the story well enough, but then I realize that most of the animation is still frames with only the character's mouth animated and extremely boring camera views. It's especially apparent when compared to the flashy and smooth Hyoui Gattai animations and ominous camera angles of the original.

I was reading the manga and yeah they did cut alot of scenes and the fact that they didnt show the talk between Jun and Ren, which btw sets up up Lee Pai long. The only thing is that If we got that scene, it wouldnt be confusing .

My personal opinion is it more aimed at those like me that actually grew up around the time the original aired. I read posts from others that in the original they changed a number of things from the manga, made the fights longer and added filler episodes, bulking it out to 64 episodes which is why everything seems quicker in the reboot (because it is). The reboot is at episode 19 now they’re in the shaman fights. In episode 19 of the original Yoh was still fighting Lenny ffs. I’m not saying I wouldn’t like some longer fights but having already seen the original I wouldn’t want to sit through 2-3 episodes of Yoh and Lenny fighting ‘again’ I’d just go rewatch SK01. I’m holding out hope that the speedy start of SK21 will enable some more awesome content and fights that didn’t make it in the first time round. 🤞🏻

The reboot is not an anime reboot but adaps the manga which the old anime added a lot (good and bad) and the story at some point in anime is not even the same like FMA its just super random and characters dont make sense anymore.Now because the new adapation is the manga well we suffer of a really ok begining its not great i admit but trust me it should get better once story element kicks in. Most of this either old anime or manga those early part where never relevent or vagueley.

I more into the storyline and the outcomr, since i read the manga first before completing the old one, I like the 2021. When watching the 2021 version I realise that the old one add many unnecessary scene such as tied manta to a tree, making Ren defeat Yoh and make it as 2 episode with cliffhanger, sending assassin to attack Yoh, Horo-Horo early debut and creating another Harusame that use spirit power instead of using the original one and test it againts a Shikigami.

Its almost like they assumed you saw the original and just want to get the stuff you've already seen out of the way and just leave the bits the manga regardless of the expense of the quality of the anime. Like every other Reboot/Retelling such as Fullmetal Alchemist and Hunter Hunter shows. By the way in the dub. Pailong wanted to stay with Jun and help to atone for their sins. Also did they forget about Xaolin, and Yoh using his spirit to fight Pailong in the battle?

Wasn't the reason for this reboot meant to produce the series in the order of the manga whereas the 4Kids version went off in their own direction hence the abrupt ending of the series back in the early 2000s. Maybe because I have a small recollection of what happened back then, but I didn't go back and watch the old series before watching this remake. I haven't read the manga to its completion but I have skimmed some of the ending chapters and saw some of the ending chapters online where I was like "wtf, where was this in this series" only to find out that 4Kids had ended the entire series where before an official Shaman King was named. Then I found out that ratings were not good for the show and 4Kids had ended the series. I was glad this 2021 reboot got made. And even to that extent, the beginning episodes were so slow and did wish that it they rushed it even more. I was sitting through the first few episodes with boredom and just hoping it would hurry up to the Shaman Fights. But of course, they couldn't skip the beginning episodes in its entirety for any new viewer. They also didn't want to make old viewers who wanted to reminisce their childhood sit through hours, days, and weeks of watching something they saw already years ago. The rushed events were a good settlement to satiy BOTH new and old viewers. New viewers got a glimpse into what it was like pre-Shaman fights, and old viewers got to hurry onto the main event.

Thank you for making this video. I was watching Shaman King as a child and really loved it. Honestly I thought that it was only my opinion that Shaman King 2021 wasn't that good because I had so much nostalgia for the original. However you made good points and that made me realise that Shaman King 2021 indeed is only ok at best. I will continue watching it but it just hasn't had the charm and the coolness of the original I really hope that they are going to take at least some time to develop the characters.

I think it's also important to note that the 2001 original English song that many of us grew up with has been pitched up on KZfaq on many different videos versus the lower mellower pitch that many of us remember. I'm a musician, and many of us have what is known as perfect pitch so we can pick up the differences in tuning and we can still remember how certain songs sounded like in our childhood, I won't get into the whole 432 Hertz thing but that's also very important which I recommend people seriously do some research cuz it's not something that's in the shadows... they know what they're doing when they're changing pitches... I'll be sharing a video with the song pitched closer to the original key... so far I've covered I believe 2 songs and repitched them

I’ve been trying to go back and forth with watching the old one and the new one. The new one basically crams 2-3 old episode pieces into 1 by skipping so much scenes and characterization. An there I noticed scenes where being switched around. Currently for me right now, I’ve already seen Horahora in the old one but haven’t really seen him in the new one just yet. I feel Ryu in the new one was done dirty. He was kind of an @sshole for unnecessarily longer and didn’t get much scenes delved into him. He was also shown to have p3do tendencies in the new version.

As someone who LIVES to shit on the "Brotherhood" trend for series that I love like FMA 03 and now Shaman King, your video gives me so much joy. I honestly expected most of the comments here being some flavor of "well, it's just being faithful to the manga, so what are you complaining about?" or something and, again, pleasantly surprised that most others seem not fond of the rushed pacing. I wholeheartedly love Shaman King. I was admittedly very expect for the reboot but I find myself rewatching and preferring the old 4kids dub with a friend of mine to this series. I'm genuinely confused about why the show is on a speed run. The early parts of the series are very important to set up and make you feel for these characters and we're just throwing it all away!! Even for a "manga faithful" adaptation a few characters were totally omitted and I find myself less invested in the bonds between Yoh, Manta and Amidamaru. I doubt it'll get better, but I hope it surprises me 🤷🏿‍♂️

I mean you aren’t wrong at all, as someone who grew up with the original, and have watched it on many occasions, and has read the manga, I can definitely agree with what you’re saying, since episode 1, and even past this episode, up to the current episode, I’ve always felt dissatisfied, or disappointed with each episode, and how bad the pacing was. they just skip out on so many memorable moments for me. in the original, I loved spending time with the cast, getting to know them, And you can’t really do that with this adaptation. But at the same time, I know and understand why they have done this. This new shaman king is definitely not for new comers, the reason why the beginning of this anime has be handled so badly, is because the creators know that fans already know the story, and because of this, they wanna get to the new material that wasn’t present in the original anime, Because most of the original anime, was filler up to a certain point. So as someone who has been a fan pretty much their whole life, I can say I’m disappointed, But at the same time, I am really excited to see the parts of the manga that never got adapted in the original, animated in this new one, I also feel as if the budget is gonna be spent on these parts that I was talking about, at least I hope. Because the stuff that happens later in the manga gets pretty fucking sick I can’t lie. as a new comer to the series, I do recommend at least finishing all the original anime and to stick with this new series, Because I do personally believe you’ll like the series in general, well that’s if you like early 2000’s battle Shonen lmao. How far did you watch the original by the way? All the way? But dear god those are some really awesome shots, and I feel the need to rewatch it now... There are elements that are closer to the manga in this new version, but it still didn't do the manga justice. I think the original anime made changes so it make more sense. I do think they rush things a whole lot and I'm actually getting worried... Because some of the arcs that I like comes early on and if they rush it, they might ruined it.

Jun's plan might have been simple intimidation, because fear is a strong weapon if it works out. Also it's stated this remake will stay much true to the manga then the OG one witch made a lot of changes. Even if you watch the fight with Horohoro , they fought like strangers (same as in the manga) while in OG version they had a filler episode before where they became friends ... probabily to make the fight more tensioned.

So much hate in the comments here for the new sk, I read the manga and I don't see any reason as to why would I compare them, with 52 scheduled episodes I'll judge the anime for what it DOES present, not for what it DOESN'T. And for now I see that the voice cast is perfect, colors used for characters, background shots, eyes and etc are really good, it's very appealing to look at, it's got a very nice vibe to it, as for the first 5 episodes, I think they did a pretty great job at trimming the manga content so that they can save room for better arcs down the road. 100% agree, as a gianormous shaman king fan the adaptation up until now is simply garbage to me. Revealing Hao, his family, spirit and where he comes from and that he's the brother of Yoh in episode 1 made me think it's awful. We knew all that info like 200 chapters in. Everything is rushed, the op is ok. Style of art is mhe to me. "yes but they only have 50 episodes" I don't give a shit, do the manga well or don't do it period. The only shaman king fans protecting this anime are the ones that simply don't wanna say it's bad because we haven't gotten new shaman king material for so long and everybody prayed to God it's good. Don't get me wrong the beginning IS slow. It is by far my least favorite part of the whole manga. But butchering it so hard? Revealing a character that's anticipated in the manga over 200 chapters like that? I don't care it's the most boring part you can rush it but not like that come on man. Tf are they gonna do next? I love Shaman King, grew up with it. Rereading the manga and watching the new 2021, and yeah I really agree with what you are saying. I feel kinda robbed of the potential. But then again I really feel like they are Targeting an audience who already knows the story that needs no context ( which sucks for new viewers) I think they are trying to rush the first half along to better story tell where the story deviates from the first anime.

I have to agree with the video. The jump from "Anna is killing me with all this training to... And we came to see a movie to relax" was non sensical to say at least. Now sadly I must play devil's advocate here. The new 2021 version is following the manga closer than the 2001 version and (once again) sadly, the amount of writing in shaman king manga is staggering! The man wrote whole essays in speech bubbles, so I do see a need to speed up the plot a little. The 2021 version has also made some compromises as the old anime did with Yoh's outfit. For most of the beginning Yoh's outfit was just his school shirt, jacket and pants, while both versions gave him the open shirt and necklace which would've banned on a school on sight, also both versions had to follow the stupid trope of "there are pipes laying everywhere in Japan, deal with it" so yeah, since the source material is that bloated and disconnected is hard to do a good adaptation. And for that I have to commend more the old anime for at least trying to add a little flourish like Silva's Totem pole canon. They did a freaking transformation sequence based on a drawing on a bonus page 15 chapters later... Thats's dedication right there. I hope this gets better after ep 5 where shit should be hitting the proverbial fan. Thanks for coming to my Ted talk, lol

Shaman King 2021 biggest problem is that even though it's pretty accurate to the manga it cuts a LOT of corners. Hopefully the rest of the show will slow down and properly flesh out the plot and characters.

The early part being rushed was a quite obvious thing to expect when the remake has 52 eps to cover 300 chapters while the old one had 64 and at best, got close to 150 chapters + terrible filler. We're reaching the trip to America in episode 12/13, which will likely be a first batch of eps on Netflix, then I guess they will stick with 4/5 chapters. Dunno how someone could prefer the old anime ending, unless they never read the Kanzenban, but that's another story.

I do like the new anime, but it feels very very rushed, and a lot of key events are left out and if you haven’t read the manga, I could see some being lost. For example in this episode, manta just ends up getting ryus sword. I wish they showed the struggle that manta went thru in order to get ryus sword. It really erases a lot of character development for manta. A lot of the characters just feel very bland. Not to mention, the fights do look sloppily edited

Yup. This pretty much my summarizes my issues with the show so far. SK 2021 was not made for new fans at all. I'm watching it with a friend I only recently got to watch the original, and even she's going, "I'd have no clue what was going on if I hadn't seen the other version." SK 2021 is a faithful speedrun adaptation, and neither of those are actually a good thing. (There is so much cringe in the original writing - Ryu and Anna, Ponchi and Conchi, Anna in general, the "romance", etc.)

You should check out the current episodes. They wouldn't disappoint you because they added some new twist to the series.

I just started watching as it came to Netflix in my country, without realizing there even was a remake. I was just like "huh?".... Cause I was missing so many scenes. I didn't realize it was a remake until I literally googled "Is the Netflix Shaman King different?" which led me to this video lol. I'm so ashamed for not noticing this sooner. I thought Netflix just cut out a lot of things, but I did notice the fights went very differently from how I felt they were going and happened especially quickly. I seem to, for example, remember a wounded Yoh fighting a Toa Ren with curtain rods from the hospital or something, which literally just never happened here. So confused.

I can say I can’t disagree. Even though it’s rushed it’s still promising but the potential is always missed with shaman king. The first anime didn’t get the attention it deserves and it’s soo good even though it’s not canon. When the remake got announced I thought the series would get a proper adaptation, but many chapters are missing and touching moments because of the short 52 episode span. I think studio mappa or bones should have animated this, at least then the show would get better animation for the fight scenes and possibly more episodes because those studios have the money. Also with it being on Netflix really took away from the attention it could have got. Many reactors aren’t watching it or anime fans because it’s not getting a sub and dub release on a great streaming service. That ruined the hype and only fans who truly like this series like me are staying around, but it hurts to see that shaman king just never gets it right or misses a opportunity to get noticed. If I was the mangaka I would have made sure this project got what it deserved, but I guess he focuses more on nostalgia and for the fans. I’m just a bit sad because shaman king deserves more from the anime community and never gets that. I hope the manga material we didn’t get in the old anime is done well in this version.

I'm a manga only for shaman king but it sucks that they are rushing the true story of Shaman king. Also how Anna acted in the 2021 anime is how she acted in the manga it's just that the manga justifiably explained her actions better.

the same happened with hunter x hunter and full metal alchemist, the older versions get into more details and they are not rushed.

My hope for this series is that they must be rushing through the prologue arc only to adapt the manga from where the original anime started deviating, which is almost the second they get to America and happens on volume 9 out of 35 of the manga. FMA: Brotherhood had the same problem of adapting the material from almost half of the 2003 version in only 10 episodes (11 if you count the first episode of Brotherhood)

6 episodes in now, I had such high hopes for my favourite anime growing up, and it is just so trash

This review is on par with my suspicions. So Netflix along with most mainstream media companies have been pumping out not only reboots, but prioritizing politics over quality content. I say to myself, “but anime is still untouched.. Right?” Then I see Shaman King return along with Toonami announcing they won’t have the license to JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures anymore, because Netflix has it. I started the first episode and it’s dry. Not like I remembered the original. I find your video and it’s aligns with what I was thinking unfortunately. I didn’t even go back to the old series to confirm and could just tell. My bad for the essay.

I’m just hoping manta will become a shaman cause he is my favorite character. Because I like the parallels between mosuke , amidamaru ,and yoh and manta. Like the bond between all of them is outstanding. In the 2001 version of shaman king ,When manta got taken over by mosuke by some deity, it tested the bond of friendship between yoh and manta and manta didn’t want to hurt his friend yoh so he changed the hammer medium into the laptop. Which is pretty awesome 👏. Manta bond with yoh is so strong that is broke the controlling seal over mosuke. Honestly I hope they do that. I really like shaman king and I just want the test of true bonds and see how far they will go. Because it’s not the some of are parts, it’s the sum of our hearts ♥️. The 2001 version had more story depth is what the 2021 version doesn’t have. so far i say the 2001 version is best because it’s a chill and there is a special element of surprise and action that I like. That what I have to say so far. Honestly both version have their unique spice to it and itself comes with surprisingly good or bad stuff.

Shaman King is a Legardary Manga/Animation from Shonen Jump...it's up there with Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Death note, Yu gi oh, Deagon Ball Z etc. The creator of this Manga even collaboratied with Stan Lee/Marvel Comices(Ultimo)
