Shame + Shunning = Control

Just June here...
I wanted to share with you some interesting things I've learned from a book I'm reading called 'Atlas of the Heart' by Brene Brown. In it, she talks about how our emotions affect our actions and how we see ourselves. I cover the section specifically about 'Shame' and how we can combat this often negative emotion that Watchtower so often uses as a tool to keep it's members under their control, including the shunning that is still going on throughout the world. And always remember, to be yourself and be well!

Hey everyone! I forgot to mention, the couple im going to interview, Joe and Fran Guerino, have a weekly live stream you can watch here on KZfaq on Vern's channel called 'Fixing My Faith(ExJW)' Vern is kind enough to take care of the technology end of things, while Joe and Fran speak on a specific subject and bring on guests. I go on there quite regularly. It Wednesday nights @7:30pm EST on Fixing My Faith(ExJW)'s channel. Please check it out! 😉

Loved this 🙌🏼. I thought I had it all figured out but after 2 years out of the org I have just realized I’m still carrying lingering self doubts and self shaming. Not on a grandiose scale but on a more minor one. We are always taught not to be proud and that’s just wrong. It’s ok. Humility is good too but a balance of pride is good also.

Exactly! There's nothing wrong with feeling shame when the moment actually calls for it, but not for it to be used as a tool of control. Shame can cause us to realize we need to ask for forgiveness of another person or make needed adjustments, but it shouldn't be a lingering emotion held over our heads constantly to burden us into control! And you are right, the long lasting effects, can pop up years later. Hang in there and thank you for your comment!!! Well said! 😉💕

Shame is a very powerful weapon in the Jehovah's Witnesses. Every Jehovah's Witness, aside from the Governing Body of course, is constantly ashamed. So terrible. Full transparency, it absolutely ruined my personal life for a little while. Therapy, supportive friends and a very patient partner have helped me through that, so shout outs to all of them. But The Watchtower has weaponized shame so hard, and they're the ones who should be ashamed. Unrelated my friend, but so glad to see you back on the platform. It feels so good to hear your stories. I feel so good knowing you're talking about something I can relate to, and I helps me continue my crusade against our old cult. All the best to you and the family!

Awe, Darth! I'm so sorry that Watchtower did such a number on all of us mentally and emotionally... they just want submission and control, and they could care less at what cost to us! I'm so glad you got the help you needed! And thank you! It's good to be back, even if on a limited time schedule, because... life is busy and I gotta take care of me and my sobriety first and foremost this time! You're so sweet, I truly appreciate you! Love to you and yours as well! 😉💗

Such a great topic June, great job presenting it. I was in for 45 years, and this week I've been thinking about the shame we felt never measuring up, never doing enough, and made to feel bad due to our flaws. It's a toxic organization. I've been corresponding with Joe and Fran, very nice people, so loving, I'll be watching your interview. As someone who battled alcohol addiction while a witness, I appreciate your openness on the subject. You're an attractive lady, and you're looking healthy and vibrant. Keep up the fight!

Love every bit of this! Thank you. Shame and guilt is my X-JW DNA to this day. Even though I was shunned almost 25 years ago. The formative years and the conditioning inside this high control group is still tripping me up on a daily basis. 🤔 ❤

They really do a number on us don't they!?!?! I hope you can find some peace and realize it's not YOU, it's THEM! They should be feeling the guilt and shame for what they put so many through in more ways than one!!! Including you! Hang in there! And if no one told you today, you are strong, beautiful and enough... just as you are! 😉💗

That's so accurate. One could be putting in 48 hours in one day with this organization and next thing you know they ask for 72 hours. I tell you people are getting burned out from feeling like a failure. I think Vern mentioned that the word disfellowship is in the book 130 time and love only six times. Such a loving organization.

I’ve been out a year now and none of my family are Jehovah’s witnesses but I remember this time last year feeling ashamed because I had to tell my family and my husband who works abroad that I had decided I didn’t want to be one of Jehovah’s witnesses anymore. I was in turmoil how would they react after the 36 years I’d been one! They never made me feel ashamed they were so pleased that I’d finally seen things for what they were. My family have supported me and listened, I do wish my parents were still alive because they would have been a great support too. I may have lost all the friends I’ve had but I can live with that because I have what’s more important my family, they still love me despite everything. So different for those whose families are Jehovah’s Witnesses I feel sad seeing and hearing everyone’s experiences. ❤

I'm happy for you though that you have your family! We all deserve happiness after dealing with the JW organization for all those years and the guilt and shame they put on us constantly. Try and be supportive to others less fortunate than you in regards to not having their family any longer. Be creative. That's what's really important! 😉💖

Thank you for your input on shame and guilt. I totally relate to the experience. The fear used was a huge factor for me as well. I still battle living under a black cloud of fear. On another note, I’m sad to learn you no longer believe in God. I pray that changes for you over time. 🙏🌻🙏

Another well presented and important video. Thanks. Your furry friend looks like a cutie. Instead of apologizing for him/her, next time make introductions. He was stealing the show behind you anyway. Those of us who watch KZfaq a lot become fans of the people and their pets. Pets help us with the healing process and are a great example of unconditional love and loyalty, especially cats and dogs. (Birds and hamsters, not so much.) LOL, Keep up the great work that you are doing.

I thought about it after, and was thinking I should have introduced Jax. That's my one dog, he's a rodesian ridgeback. He's 10 years old and loves to whine when I'm not talking to him! He does it all the time! 🤪 Lol, my girl pup, Ellie, was sitting on the couch next to me, as quiet as a mouse! Lol They are both so wonderful to me and have brought me a great deal of comfort over the years while I've woke up from the indoctricroction from Watchtower. That's a good video idea actually. 🤔 And thank you Pat, I think I was afraid to stop and introduce Jax for fear I'd lose my train of thought. I always try and get my videos in one take. 😉🩷
