Here's an article to shame the worst journalists out there.
And to boil your blood. At least, it did boil mine.

What stuck out to me was how this guy detested anything wholesome. Weather it was wholesome conversation, a wholesome movie, a supportive and loving wife, a family dinner, faithful fans, some spiritual insight on life, even the kindness of giving a strange guest his finest room. How dare he! lol

Agreed, I feel like he targeted Sanderson because of his faith from the start. I'm shock that it got published. It wasn't really about Sanderson, it was about the author being disappointed Sanderson wasn't this evil religious stereotype.

I get it, the author of the article hates Mormons. The author went on and on and on denigrating their faith. Now imagine if the author were to write a hit piece, attacking someone because they were Jewish or Muslim. He would be fired immediately, but Mormons are easy targets. It's OK to attack and denigrate Mormons.

The algorithm decided to throw this video in my suggestions so I gave it a click. What a politely incisive and insightfully brief takedown! Unfortunately, he's fairly typical of the miserable creature that many modern journalists (or churnalists as my preferred term) are today. They are usually over-educated, spoiled children of the elite class, who relish in the social destruction of people more talented/popular than them; and whose resentment at not being as successful as their station deserves clearly gives them the moral high ground for said destruction - even as pathetically expressed through clickbait-titled and condescending op-eds. "When envy strikes upon a loser" is a perfect summary.

You know, I'm jealous of the man who wrote this article. I've watched some of Sanderson's lectures before. I used his tips last year when I tried NaNoWriMo for the first time. And I can tell that he is a good guy who's trying his best to give people the stories and characters they want. I'm jealous that this spiteful shitstain got to go over there, spent days in the man's house, ate with him, talked with him directly and even went to one of his conventions, and he wasted all of what should have been a wonderful experience. He couldn't write more than 4 thousand words in five months. I write more than that in a week. Never mind the fact it reads like something a A.I might spit out. A nerd, and a disgusting, casual, and nice one. Who would pay for their child to learn from him at a university? My mummy and daddy certainly wouldn't. That's why they funded my 9 year degree. I adjusted my ray bans, fastened my cardigan, and reflected on how glad I was to finally be out of the presents of people who are inferior to me." - Jason, probably.

Why, you are a smarter person than I am, that's for sure. I wish I had had the foresight not to click either... To summarise the article: 1. "Sanderson is extremely Mormon," 2. "He makes lots of money but nobody knows who he is" 3. "He can't write" 4. "His books are young-adult-ish never ending something something " 5. "He's boring" 6. "He likes his own works too much and is too excited about them" 7. "The people at his convention were a bunch of smelly losers" 8. Oh, yeah, "Sanderson is a weirdo".This was stated verbatim repeatedly. This barely scratches the surface, but doesn't convey any of the actual vitriol with which this hit piece was written.

best i can recall, the author mocks sanderson's kid for adding salt to fancy Chinese noodles. that's literally the level of put down in the wired author's mind. like, "oh, such commoners, don't they know you are not supposed to add salt to these particular Chinese noodles! I'm from San Francisco and I know all about......". It's literally at that level. Making fun of a kid for eating what a kid likes. It was such a condescending hit piece.

It is a hit piece from a self confessed loser. A regular honest article wouldn't have had nearly as many views. Negativity sadly gets more clicks.... Charitably, its written by a person who cannot admit to themselves that fantasy is literature and they like it and Sanderson, even though his prose is somewhat bland. He could mention, why so many people love his work: for the excellent plots, awesome characters and spectacular world-building. His religion is less prominent in his work than Tolkien and non-existent compared to C S Lewis, but I guess he had to find some angle to justify this mess of an article

I can see why you are upset about the WoT Amazon show. Matter of fact I am quite upset about it as well - it was a mockery of this great story. With that being said, I don't know how much Sanderson could've defended it. He was a consultant for the first 6 episodes of the show, not an executive producer. Nor does he hold the rights to the WoT IP. A consultant holds no power beyond having the opportunity to express opinion, which the producers and screen writers can then either take into consideration or ignore at will. Now, I'm not saying that he attempted to stop them from making these moronic decisions - I don't have enough information to judge that, I'm just saying that I don't know that he could've done anything. The whole thing could've only been prevented by whoever currently holds the rights to the WoT property and sold the screen rights to Red Eagle Entertainment. They should've negotiated stricter rules for sticking to the source material, imo.

@libraryunbounded

I can see where you're coming from with this and I have no issues with people expressing their opinion. My issue, and I am sure the issue of the majority of people who criticised the article, is with the way the article is written. As to whether Sanderson is God-like, I am not sure where you found a fault with him here. The article was written before the outrage with the clear purpose to create outrage - a self fulfilling prophecy. Sanderson didn't ask for it. Whether people make videos for views, well, I guess the point of a video on youtube is to be watched. I have no doubts about my own reasoning. And since you clearly doubt that I broke the rule "just once" you can go ahead and look through my videos - there aren't that many of them, but enough to show you whether I spoke the truth. And if your issue is with people who make things just to get views/clicks, look no further than the article that created all this outrage to begin with. 🙂
