What a precociously gifted batsman Vinod Kambli had been.... I could still remember his initial couple of years in the international arena, '93-'94, in which he had been a very consistent and flamboyant young batsman to watch with great flair, in contrast to his compatriot Sachin Tendulkar who had been a solid yet more sedate Gavaskar-like material. In fact, I do remember this particular game and the over too quite clearly for two reasons. One is the hammering Warne got by this rookie gifted batsman who promised so much by then. The other is it's during this over that I came to know that Lara had gone on to make 320+ not out against England in the other part of the world, who went on to score 375 the following day breaking Sir Garry Sobers' then record of 365*. These videos send you back in memory lane where the game of Cicket had its true essence in it unlike now. In terms of sheer Cricketing talent, Vinod Kambli could have matched or even surpassed Tendulkar, but his career was cut short prematurely, partially due to his own faults too. Yet the selectors too should have given him a proper second chance rather than sidelining him for good quite unfairly after only one single failed series (WIs tour of India, '95), especially given his early success and the fact that what a precocious talent this guy had been, sadly it was not to be. In that respect, VVS Laxman had been mighty lucky to have had survived through his early vulnerable/shaky period of 3-4 years from '96 to '99/2000 until he blossomed into a world class batsman who, along with seemingly ever rock-solid Rahul Dravid, went on to become a master of bad wicket play. Quite clearly, this is nothing but double standards by the same selection panel. To their credit though, we could see the best of Laxman at least, but the case of Kambli had been one of the greatest "if"s of '90s; a player who had been far too good to have been omitted from Tests (his forte had been primarily in the longer version/format though he was quite a capable batsman in ODIs as well ..., much like VVS too !...) without any *proper* second run after a single failed series in '95 in favor of Saurav Ganguly. The fact that Kambli couldn't play the short ball has been nothing but a myth propagated by those who had not watched him play at length, or by those who had wanted to dismiss him deliberately for some reason. Yes, he failed in that one single tour; WIs tour of India in '95, to some short-pitched deliveries/bouncers, yet he was quite a capable player who could've easily overcome that slight hiccup had the selectors persisted with him and given him at least a few more games instead of dropping him from the squad at the age of 23-24. Even in terms of playing the short balls / bouncers, he was not someone like Saurav Ganguly or Michael Beven who simply had got no answers to it. It had been more of a short-term vulnerability given the circumstances in contrast to the more permanent inability like in cases of the latter two; Ganguly and Bevan. The fact of the matter here is that, while some have been able to flourish to their full potential or at least to a considerable portion of it, there had been certain others who too could have achieved pretty much the same level of greatness yet have withered to be much lesser mortals in the end, may be due to many reasons and unfavorable circumstances.

When he was dropped frm test cricket his avg was 54 and surprisingly no second chance was given to him in test cricket where he was fastest 1000 run scorer. He was not even picked for england tour against which he had scored double century. When he was dropped from one day for the first time in 1996, his avg was above 40. And he was the only century maker in 1996 worldcup after sachin.
@HLANGL
@HLANGL 3 жыл бұрын
@@sachinnewaskar3920 In fact the second fastest of all time to reach 1000 in tests, after the almost unsurpassable Bradman. Yes, by 1996 when he was dropped for the first time from the squad, he averaged 40 in ODIs too, scoring almost 2000 runs batting primarily in the lower middle order. In short, he had been far too good to be treated/mistreated in that way.

Captain Sachin and selector Ajit Wadekar of Mumbai tried very hard to accomodate Kambli in team at expense of Dravid or Ganguly but he failed. Dravid was dropped from One day side branded a slow test player. Ganguly was benched as 12th man In 1st edition Sahara Cup 1996 for 3 games by Captain Sachin to accomodate buddy Kambli who failed. He replaced out of form Azhar then and later in 1999 he replaced an injured Azhar again under Captain Sachin but again failed. Laxman was not even in team regularly till 2000 Aus series. Why are people falsely blaming BCCI and caste for Kambli's inability to rise to occassion despite repeated chances due to Sachin Tendulkar? Then like a sore loser he blamed Sachin for not backing him!

Great cricketer but bad luck to born in this...
@MrPatilbaba
@MrPatilbaba 5 жыл бұрын
It’s because bad habits .. he was playing very well and got fame and money . Then he started late night parties .. behind women’s .. started going late to practice sessions .. used to cancel practice sessions ., then he started under performing.. but never took control back .. because of frustration he started losing focus more and finally ruined his career .. so one should be like Tendulkar .. no matter what happens he used to focus on his next match .. though kambli was better batsman than Sachin just bcoz of his bad habits he ruined it all ..a big lesson learned for all other cricketers

Kambli was a very talented cricketer. However fame and money could not keep him under control. Lady luck was also not in his favour except for a brief spell. However we enjoyed his 2 Double Hundreds and a Hundred in Test Cricket.

Vinod Kambli was the one successfully took on the mighty West Indies and hit double century. It was a great feat considering he did it against great fast bowlers like Ambrose, Walsh ,Ian Bishop etc who were absolute horror to batsmen in 80s & 90s.
