DIY: How to change the oil and filter on a Suzuki V-Strom. I personal think any motorcyclist rider would greatly benefit from knowing how to change their own oil. Along with some training on vehicle inspection, I think many breakdowns could be avoided.

You will see that many of the tips and procedures used are universal for skill sets "every mechanic should know" and that the biggest value to my videos is the teaching of these skills that are not found in a service manual.
I often get asked this question:
Q: How does one learn these skill sets "every mechanic should know" if they are not found in a manual?
A: NUMBER 1.....GET DIRTY and start wrenching.
-Ask questions
-Find a seasoned craftsman to mentor under
-Tech schools can significantly speed this time up
-Research, read, watch KZfaq videos
Tip: You will never learn it all from one source or in a short time period. No matter what craft you are trying to master, YOU must be dedicated and put the time in. THERE IS NO BETTER WAY TO LEARN THAN DOING! I will say it again, you must actually do the work to master it. You cannot just watch or read about it and master anything.
You want to be a master bike builder, mechanic, welder, nurse, carpenter or you fill in the blank?
-Don't take for granted opportunities to learn deeper
-Be humble and seek advice
-Be intentional with your learning plan
-Don't blame a school, job or your parents for not giving you ever answer, go get it!
I teach a motorcycle/powersports technician program at Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City, Iowa. These videos are used for review of labs for students and creating a deeper understanding of the lesson/skill set. It's only an oil change but... done wrong could cost you your engine! I'm 51 and in all my oil changes only once forgot to put the new oil in. Idled the car for about 30 seconds and had a bad feeling. Turned off the engine added the oil. Car ran fine for years but I never forgot that lesson! Never though of using teflon paste on drain plug. Great vid.

Tremendous vid. I'm 68 and have been servicing bikes and changing oil for over 50 years now. I have never applied any teflon tape or teflon type sealant to plug threads but guessing it's an OK idea. On all the Vstroms I simply add a few ounces to the new filter...fill the crankcase with 2.5 quarts...start and run for a few minutes...shut off and let settle for 5 minutes...then top off to the upper red line. Saves guessing on correct fill quantity.

"2700 ml happens to convert almost exactly to 2700 cc". That's because it's the same exact unit. 1000 millilitres = 1 litre = 1 cubic decimetre = 1000 cubic centimetres. Nonetheless, thanks for this great tutorial. These are the tricks you'll never get from a manual, and it's perfect for people like me who are learning to wrench on their first bike. You are clearly an experienced instructor.

I was triggered by the same comment. 1ml = 1cc = 1gram (pure water). Then just multiply or divide by 10 from there. Ever wondered why IBCs are the size they are? 1m3 of fluid = 1 metric ton (pure water)

It happens... I make repair videos and when describing the tech stuff the right word in the wright order or best way to describe sometimes escapes me. Interesting to know how many people actually realized that 1ml=1cc

paste sealant on oil drain plug? I'd honestly skip that step, let the crush washer do the sealing as it was intended from the factory. Only add product if there's a continued issue beyond what the washer can seal.

Oh god, how often do I have to tell apprentices to clean the damn oil tray. "Is that inch long chunk of swarf that's floating around in the oil from this bikes motor?" you don't know, do you? I've also found it a good idea to run a magnet through the tray on any bike I think might be a little suspect if they aren't already running a magnetic sump plug. just makes it easier to spot anything that's in thick black gunk masquerading as oil, like the screw from the neutral sender unit that fell out of a Suzuki I had in last week.

You know how low paid workers can seem able to screw up the most simple things? Guess who shops hire to do simple stuff? Oft times? KIDS who are careless and prone to screwing up things because they are cocky and care-less ... That's why I have always changed my own oil. I just don't trust someone minimum water to put the RIGHT oil in my vehicle! It would be so easy for a careless worker to put thereof oil in and it typically will NEVER be caught even! Not only that is how easy it would for them to overfill etc...I just don't trust em!

Piercing an oil filter is terrible advice. What are you going to do if you still can't undo it? If you can't remove it and it's not pierced then you can fill with oil and then take it to a garage if needs be. Obviously it's not ideal re using the oil or forking out for new oil but it will be much cheaper than getting a bike transported to a garage.

Please, why are you using old, dirty, debri filled oil to wipe on the threads and gasket of the filter. A finger amount of "new" oil would be much better. You know it is clean. You could be putting grit on the gasket. Sorry, but you lost me there. Enjoying till then.

Kenneth Settles BMW I’m told actually trains techs to use the old oil as its “broken down” creating a better seal (i know sounds crazy) and also not to contaminate the new oil. I’m trying to find the actual curriculum. Ask yourself honestly what harm could wetting the gasket with this used oil cause? None. If there was any real risk it would not be done. Using mechanical common knowledge and intention is always best practice. This channel has over 600 free videos using such. I welcome your opinion and hope you find value on here. Wow, such a quick response. I am not a vehicle trained (other than by life, my dad, friends and the US AirForce). Actually, I have been working on vehicles, as required by the pocketbook, since I rebuilt parts of my first car (1966 Rambler American). My history is being trained to repair medical equipment by the USAF and was my career for over 25 years. I would never run my finger through old blood to create a seal on a piece of equipment. :) Anyway, maybe I don't clean my old oil catcher pan well enough but i think if there was any grit/dirt/other that the bottom of the pan would be where I would find it. I would think a clean (or mostly) finger wouldn't contaminate the new oil (just putting my finger over the spout and letting some get on the tip). But seriously, a difference of opinion is all this is. I appreciate your training videos to add to all the others I have watched to learn how to work on my '03 Kawa XII and other vehicles. As of Sunday we have added a '09 Vstrom 650 to our garage and that is what brought me here. The previous owner passed away and I bought his joy from his widow for my wife to ride. Unfortunately he wasn't there to ask questions of so I am starting from scratch. We are going to be preparing the 2 bikes for a December ride down to Panama so quality preparation is required. As said above, most of the time your method has no consequences. But.... Anyway, Happy Thanksgiving! if it sounded negative in my original post, I apologize. I drove in from New Mexico to my Mom's in Washington State in 18 hours and am still recovering (hey, I'm 62). Blessings - Ken
