"Obi-Wan is sounding so much like the Ben I know." That would make Ewan McGregor so happy; each movie his goal was to get closer and closer to Alec Guinness' Ben Kenobi. One thing that was eye opening, once we finally saw Anakin's fall, was how different it was than I think most of us were expecting. It wasn't some cool or badass moment. It was a sad moment. The point Lucas wanted to make with Anakin was that ultimately, he wasn't some cool, sexy figure of evil. He's ultimately a sad and pathetic figure. He got tricked into going into the darkside. I think as a kid, it didn't really hit me, because I would think anyone older than me is an adult, but if you look at Anakin's age, he was like under 25 when all this shit hit. He's barely an adult. Think about how when you around that age, and how gullible sometimes we are. How someone like a used car salesman could con you, make you feel like they're your friend, have your best interests at heart. Now imagine there's this Chancellor who basically becomes your father figure, because Obi Wan refuses to completely trust you. And he's (Palpatine) is always the supportive parental figure, telling him he's so great, that the Jedis are wrong for not thinking the same, etc etc etc. Ultimately when you spell it out, that was what paved the way to Anakin's fall. He was looking for a father figure, and the only one offering him that was Palpatine.

There is another story about the Clone Army. The flaw of Clones, because of the demand of genetic growth acceleration, the Clones were dying out. Whether this was intentional or a bit of oversight in production of Clones, the Clone Army of the Republic was phased out completely by the Emperor. The Imperial troops of every corps began pressing citizens into service, or have those willing to serve join the Academy. As like Han and some of Luke's friends.

1) i hate the chips, dave filoni protecting his characters from guilt. the idea that they are just loyal due to regular indoctrination is a much better parallel to the rise of real authoritarianism and real falls of democracies.'but they wouldn't betray their friend they fought alongside for 3 years!' go read some actual history, plenty of people were willing to betray their ww1 trench brothers and blood relatives in the Russian civil war in the name of their ideological loyalties. plenty of people were willing to betray their civil war buddies and their blood relatives in peacetime soviet union in the name of their ideological loyalties. plenty of people were willing to betray their ww1 buddies and their blood relatives in the rise of the nazis in the name of their ideological loyalties. plenty of people betrayed and still betray their family in 'communist' china. 2)also silly lore, it makes more sense to do both, and in older lore they did both. but for some reason they decided to retcon this. once again probably to distance filoni's pressious characters from the empire...

Padme and Anakin's interaction on Mustafar is so sad. Anakin is so desperate and scared, especially when he says he can overthrow the Chancellor. You can hear the fear in his voice, because he sees that Padme is in more danger than she was before he sided with Palpatine. It always felt like Anakin saw he was getting closer and closer to losing her, and you can see that this is someone with PTSD terrified that he's still helpless and is going to lose the person he loves most again.

"The Dark Side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural." Gives me chills every time. Love that opera scene. Hey, Shanelle! Well, you got wise to Palpatine before the reveal but still had a great reaction! Lucas provided visual and vocal cues since "Phantom Menace" that Palpatine and Sidious were one and the same. Ian McDiarmid plays the Emperor in all the Star Wars films in which he appears. He's the one character having a total blast throughout the prequels because he's pulling everybody's strings! His seduction of Anakin is masterful. Chronologically, "Solo" is the next to see, then "Rogue One", then "The Mandalorian" live-action series follows the Classic three, then the Sequel trilogy. See the films in that order to complete the Skywalker Saga then go back to the live-action series, then the three animated series, "Clone Wars", "Bad Batch" and "Rebels". There are revelations in "The Mandalorian" that will make you curious to see their origins in the animated shows afterwards. The absolute best line of the Prequel trilogy goes to Natalie Portman: "So this is how liberty dies...with thunderous applause." Wookiees live for hundreds of years! In "Revenge of the Sith", Chewbacca is 181 years old! It is a popular belief that Padme's life force was drained out of her and channeled into Anakin by Palpatine which is why her death and his re-birth are juxtaposed by Lucas. Therefore, Palpy is directly responsible for the death of the person he convinced Anakin he could save prompting his betrayal of the Jedi in the first place! A very cruel manipulation. One of the Jedi Order's problems is that they had become ossified by dogma and had lost touch with their true purpose. This made them vulnerable to manipulation by the Sith and blind to their own shortcomings. Iconoclasts like Qui-Gon sought esoteric knowledge beyond ordained teachings to plumb deeper truths and were viewed as troublesome for suggesting the Order had become complacent and stagnant. The knowledge Yoda imparts to Obi-Wan at the end is his discovery of the path to immortality. His spiritual journey is chronicled in the animated "Clone Wars" when Liam Neeson returns as Qui-Gon Jinn's spirit to instruct Yoda in the deepest mysteries of the Force. Jedi immortality manifests as the Force-ghosts you see in the Classic trilogy. This was an ability unknown to the Order until Qui-Gon contacts Yoda which is why there are no Force-ghosts in the Prequel trilogy. The Jedi are all but exterminated by Order 66 much like how the Knights Templar were rounded up on a single day, Friday the 13th, in October 1307, by order of the French King Philip IV in a series of coordinated, simultaneous arrests. Emperor Palpatine initiated a smear campaign to vilify the Jedi and expunged any mention of them from the historical record. Philip IV did the same to the Templars demonizing them with false allegations of larceny, murder, sexual perversion, sedition and Satanism that led to their mass burning at the stake with the blessing of the Papacy! Palpy achieved control of a galaxy with his scheme while Philip was simply dodging the crushing debt he owed the Order! The clones are tragic pawns in Palpatine's scheme. They were bred by the Republic and were loyal to their creators serving through thick and thin with their Jedi Generals. The animated "Clone Wars" does a magnificent job of individualizing the troopers. However, they were engineered with a fail-safe to force them to obey executive decisions without question. Initiating Order 66 flips the switch in their brains forcibly turning them against the Jedi whom they previously would have died for. It's a horrifying betrayal not least of which to the clones themselves. Although the Separatist leadership was led by Count Dooku, they weren't privy to the collusion between Dooku and Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. Each Sith Lord led a faction in the Clone Wars to play both sides against each other creating chaos they could manipulate to their personal advantage! The populations of the worlds which aligned with one faction or the other truly believed in their respective causes which were socioeconomic and geopolitical. The layman had no idea he was just a pawn in Palpatine's grand scheme. With the Jedi exterminated, the greatest threat to his plan was taken off the board and he sent Vader to dispose of the Separatist leadership so he could consolidate power over the organizations they represented. The Separatist worlds relied on the support of those industries and institutions so those worlds would fall in line once those support systems were firmly in the Emperor's grip. The japor snippet pendant Amidala was buried wearing was the same one Anakin carved for her in "Phantom Menace". Senator Bail Organa orders C-3PO's mind to be wiped but R2-D2's CPU is left intact. Artoo REMEMBERS EVERYTHING!

Emperor Palpatine's name first appears in the prologue to the novelization for the original film Star Wars (A New Hope). In fact pretty much the whole prequel story is laid out in the two pages of this prologue . If you read the original novelizations of the original films the name Palpatine is there it's just never mentioned in the movies. So it was never really a mystery if you knew. It was just a matter of getting the details and seeing it play out. This is the prologue: ANOTHER galaxy, another time. The Old Republic was the Republic of legend, greater than distance or time. No need to note where it was or whence it came, only to know that… it was the Republic. Once, under the wise rule of the Senate and the protection of the Jedi Knights, the Republic throve and grew. But as often happens when wealth and power pass beyond the admirable and attain the awesome, there appear those evil ones who have greed to match. So it was with the Republic at its height. Like the greatest of trees, able to withstand any external attack, the Republic rotted from within though the danger was not visible from outside. Aided and abetted by restless, power-hungry individuals within the government, and the massive organs of commerce, the ambitious Senator Palpatine caused himself to be elected President of the Republic. He promised to reunite the disaffected among the people and to restore the remembered glory of the Republic. Once secure in office he declared himself Emperor, shutting himself away from the populace. Soon he was controlled by the very assistants and boot-lickers he had appointed to high office, and the cries of the people for justice did not reach his ears. Having exterminated through treachery and deception the Jedi Knights, guardians of justice in the galaxy, the Imperial governors and bureaucrats prepared to institute a reign of terror among the disheartened worlds of the galaxy. Many used the imperial forces and the name of the increasingly isolated Emperor to further their own personal ambitions. But a small number of systems rebelled at these new outrages. Declaring themselves opposed to the New Order they began the great battle to restore the Old Republic. From the beginning they were vastly outnumbered by the systems held in thrall by the Emperor. In those first dark days it seemed certain the bright flame of resistance would be extinguished before it could cast the light of new truth across a galaxy of oppressed and beaten peoples… From the First Saga Journal of the Whills “They were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Naturally they became heroes.” Leia Organa of Alderaan, Senator

I always liked that after their wedding in Episode II, R2 is now with Anakin and 3P0 is now with Padmé when they were originally owned by each other. Seems the droids basically were their wedding gifts to each other and that's why 3P0 got the gold finish since he now serves as Padmé's butler while R2 is Anakin's assistant during his military service, since each is much better suited to serve their original owner's spouse.

Also, another fun fact and which make this movie so good with the story and foreshadow play, is the fact that during the opening rescue sequence Palpatine tells Anakin that there's no time to rescue Obi-Wan and Anakin emphatically says that then his fate will be the same as theirs and these words do come true in the original trilogy since at different points all of them died in a Death Star

Yes, the weapon they were talking about was the death star. They had a hologram of it. Grievous is a cyborg. Part robot part alien (kaleesh specifically). He coughs because his lungs are irritated by his implants. In pre disney purchase Legends material, it’s because Mace Windu crushed his chest with the Force. Palpatine’s favorite soda? Mountain Dew-it! I mean if you check who plays the Emperor and Palpatine it’s not exactly a secret 😂 Anakin got the scar during the war “Has no jedi ever had fear???” You’re seeing the prequel jedi’s flaws No, Palpatine is not Anakin’s father. Neither genetically or through the force. And no a comic did not confirm he is, a Lucasfilm storygroup member explicitly said that was not the intention. George doesn’t want Anakin’s true origin revealed, even decided not to include a Palpatine line of him saying he was his father in a way. Though in Legends (which George was largely uninvolved with) the Force created Anakin in response to Plagueis messing around with midichlorians “You are on this council, but we do not grant you the rank of master.” “What?” “SAY WHAT AGAIN!” Anakin is the real chosen one. He turned back to the light and killed the Emperor, destroying the sith Anakin in the last movie: I will even learn to stop people from dying! Palpatine in this movie: He could even keep the ones he cared about...from dying. Anakin: SAY MORE RIGHT NOW! Yup. It’s never explicitly said, but Sidious was indeed Plagueis’s apprentice. The term for the species is varactyl but it is a lizard like creature Jedi can love, they just shouldn’t loves selfishly, which Anakin does Mace Windu about Sidious “He’s too dangerous to be left alive!” Palpatine about Dooku at the start of the movie “He was too dangerous to be kept alive.” Imagine how that messed with Anakin’s head. Sam Jackson has said that he’s open to returning as Mace What? He’s had the black clothes. Like the whole time. Clones served the empire for a short time and then were phased out for regular human reruits and conscripts. Those are stormtroopers Some of your questions are answered by the Clone Wars show. The longer one. Jango and Boba wear Mandalorian armor. Armor made and worn by mandalorian people. So no, The Mandalorian isn’t about Palpatine I’m sorry. He puts on the hood, shoots lightning, becomes Vader’s master, has that ugly ass face, and you still don’t connect that he’s the emperor? He cut off his legs _and_ his remaining arm A long lived fan theory is that Padme died because Palpatine used the Force to siphon her life energy into Vader. There’s been nothing confirming it. Also, dying of a broken heart is a real thing. It happened to Carrie Fisher’s mom shortly after Carrie passed. Yes, Anakin needs to stay in the suit. It keeps him alive. Yup, Obi learns from Qui Gon how to become a force ghost Only 3PO got his mind wiped Technically Anakin’s fall started once he was inducted into the jedi order. A flawed order he often disagrees with, a teacher who wasn’t ready to be one, and a father figure grooming and manipulating him. Some of the trivia you’re seeing is from Legends continuity, like Grievous having Sifo Dyas blood Ahmed Best did come back as Jar Jar. I assume his spoken lines were cut. He didn’t dislike playing Jar Jar, he was actually pretty proud of it, he was emotionally shaken by assholes throwing a shit fit over Jar Jar to the point he nearly committed suicide

By the time of a new hope, Storm Troopers were enlisted men, and or children that had been taken and pressed into the Imperial Army. There were a few Clones in the story line that were still part of the Imperial Military, but at this point they would all be 45ish years old and not deemed suitable as ground troops. There are some stories in the Cartoon/animated series that you might check out after you watch Rogue One which is the next movie that is in the order of what you should watch for these reviews.

He's super happy and excited about the news but can't let on WHY he's so excited or why he would be, he's a Jedi and is supposed to be humble and calm... so he acts 'humble' and 'calm' and in turn he seems 'fake' and 'off' with his speech. Anakin is acting the whole movie, 'acting' like a model Jedi. Even around the people he loves... he's still trying to be the person he wants them to see him as.

The Clone Wars not only gives more chemistry to the relationship to Anakin's and Padme's relationship, but also emphasizes the brotherhood between Obi Wan and Anakin. Just some observation: The Jedi can love, they are encouraged to love, what they can't have is attachment (the inability to conceive your life or it's meaning without the attachment), that's why Yoda tells him to train himself to let go of what he fears to lose, this is reflected on both christian and budhist ideals (the foundation used for the Jedi code), the more you desire something the more you attach yourself to it, the more you fear to lose it, the less yourself you are, and thus you lose yourself in the something, that will be ineitably lost at some point. Someone else? Your knowledge? Your beauty? Your own life? Everything will fade at some point, no need for filosophies to know that, fearing the inevitable is pointless, letting go is the best way to get rid of an attachment so life can be properly lived. That is the Jedi code.

Hi, Shanelle! I just finished watching all of your reactions to the Star Wars Skywalker Saga Prequel Trilogy and I cannot begin to describe how much joy you have brought me! My mother grew up with the original trilogy and I grew up with the prequels. 'Attack of the Clones' was the first movie that I saw. I was three years old when I watched it for the first time and it is still not only my favorite 'Star Wars' movie to this day, but it is also my all-time favorite movie in general. I understand that the romance between Padme and Anakin is not for everyone, but I loved it when I was a kid and it still makes a lot of sense to me now. To each their own though! Also, I laughed when you were speculating about things, especially when your predictions were so on-point and you had no idea! "Is Padme Luke and Leia's mom?" "Oh my God, is Amidala gonna die?" The one about Palpatine had me rolling, too: "Is Palpatine Anakin's father?" PLEASE! I WAS WHEEZING! Also, I can't believe that it took you well into 'Attack of the Clones' to figure out that Sidious was Palpatine. I love it so much! Hayden Christensen is a brilliant actor! He was great in the second movie in my opinion, but this movie just solidified that for me. (He was also my first crush. The dude is a big part of my childhood!) Also, if you want some more fun facts about the prequels, Hayden was actually nineteen years old when he played Anakin in the second movie, making him the youngest of the cast. He definitely bulked up for his role in 'Revenge of the Sith' and he was also wearing a wig. (I was obsessed with his long hair when I was a little girl and my entire world was turned upside down years later when I discovered that it was a wig the whole time). Your reaction to the third movie was so emotional for me to watch. It's so beautiful watching someone who has never seen the prequels react to them for the first time. It brings me back. Thanks for the nostalgia, Shan!

The reaction at the start, when the title "Star Wars" showed up on the screen ... that was what you got at the start of every Star Wars movie after the first one - an auditorium full of "Yeah!"s and cheers and all that! You would have fit right into the crowd! When Yoda says that he must let go of what he fears to lose, because fear is a path to the Dark Side ... he's not saying 'get rid of all fear'; it is the fear of losing what you want/love that is dangerous. That is one of the primary reasons that Jedi aren't supposed to 'settle down' and have a family ... it gives Fear a solid foothold on your psyche, and you can too easily be drawn into doing something Destructive/Wrong in order to save them from a threat or danger.

The clones actually have inhibitor chips put into their heads. The order "execute order 66" was basically like a kill switch making them turn on the Jedi no matter what. Commander Cody (the clone that shot down Obi Wan) grew very close to Obi Wan during the war and would never hurt Obi Wan in his right mind. Just makes it even more tragic. A few clones figured out how to remove the chips and thus did not kill Jedi. All this is shown in the animated show Clone Wars which takes place between episodes Attack of the clones and Revenge of the Sith. There's a significance to Obi-Wan saying "Hello there" when he drops in on Grievous and the Seperatist droids. "Hello there" was the first line Sir Alec Guiness said in A New Hope and became a bit of a running gag, particularly in the Clone Wars TV series. In fact, in one episode of the Clone Wars, Grievous says it to Obi-Wan Clone Wars is a good watch. It covers the time between episodes 2 and 3 and answers a lot of question raised in the prequel movies. It also fleshes out some prequel characters and introduces a bunch of great new ones. The crowd was thrilled with the Palpatine v Yoda fight, espeically after watching Palpatine take out 3 Jedi Masters so easily in the earlier scene when they went to arrest Palpatine. Since you commented on the 'no' that Vader cries out at the end, the ones that Vader says in Jedi, one before he lifts Palpatine and the other as he's carrying to the pit, those were added after the release of 'Revenge of the Sith'. Lucas made additional edits to the original trilogy after 'Revenge of the Sith' was released. The other was replacing the voice of Jason Wingreen to that of Temeura Morrison for Boba Fett in Empire Strikes Back. That was the first clue that the stormtroopers are not the clones because their voices weren't changed. There's also a canon explanation in the animated series "The Bad Batch" of why the stormtroopers are not clones.

Actually a fun fact, or not so fun, to answer your question about why Obi Wan didn't "finish the job". I don't remember the exact quote, because it's been a while, but the novelization of this movie says Obi Wan didn't finish Anakin off there was because he wanted Anakin to suffer. He figured Anakin was going to die anyway and Obi Wan didn't want it to be a quick and painless death.

At birth, all clones had a chip in their brains that made them activate order 66. Clones where people, with emotions and bonds to the Jedi, who they fought side by side. The chip ensured to turn off all of that emotion and focus only in completing the order. "Good soldier follow orders"
@Quotenwagnerianer

I accept that this is how Filoni wrote it and it ended up this way in "The Clone Wars". But I really hated it. It was clearly written that way to make it more easy to "heal" a clone by simply removing the chip. But I like the explanation that Lama Su gives in Episode II better. They are simply genetically coded to be less independent thinkers and probably have this order ingrained in their subconscious mind. This way no chip is needed, and no clone could ever be "saved" from obeying Order 66.

@@Quotenwagnerianer it's not Dave filloni's idea it was George Lucas's idea for the inhibitor chips he implemented long before Disney bought star wars. Every element in the movies and show he came up with or had to sign off on, and in the case of the clones that was his doing. That was the genetic modification the kaminoans were talking about. You can't just simply code something into the human brain during a cloning process of them growing in tubes like you would code a bios on a computer, it's not a matter of binary 0101s. The inhibitor chip was a bio organic design that was created with sith alchemy dooku was the one who gave the template for it it was a type of hypnosis. For an entire army of clones to turn on its commanders at the order of the civilian chief of state with no explanation violating the chain of command and all they've fought for their careers to secure democracy against a authoritarian faction like the confederacy of their own free will is as believable as the soldiers in the UK or the US willingly following orders from a president or prime minister to eliminate the entire brass of military command just because someone told them to so the government can be transformed into a empire

They are all of their own time. - Comparing them all to each other is madness. Its like comparing a Laurel and Hardy movie to a Jim Carrey movie! Both great and of their time.

In the first movie the fight scene had music called "duel of fates" (if i recall) this was because the 3 were fighting for Anakin's future - Qui gon was father figure - obi wan was brother figure - maul/Sidious would have been direct to dark side (created by Sidious and his master) Padme was killed by the emperor - using the force to kill her so Anakin/Vader had no more conflict of loyalty Anakin is the one that brought balance - he killed the emperor to save Luke - his love for Padme and Luke through her brought him back to fulfill his prophecy

Hayden Christensen’s physical acting in this film is actually pretty good The scene where him and Padme stare out the window and then the Mustafa scene when he almost realises what he’s done but there’s no going back are both really great scene’s that show his physical acting And you really feel the weight behind a lot of his fight

I always say that Christensen is a great actor in these movies when he isn’t forced to talk. That sounds like an insult, but honestly, almost nobody could make these scripts sound like natural human dialogue, so you have a trilogy where a future Oscar winner sounds like a robot and the only way to come out looking good is to embrace the cheese and be immortalized as memes. Any time Christensen is able to just perform without figuring out how to get through the written word, he’s able to really sell Anakin’s journey. There’s a ton of great face acting going on with him, especially in III, that can be easy to miss.

I have no trouble admitting Revenge of the Sith is my favorite Star Wars film. This was the first one I became hyped for, since others were released before I had seen them, and the wait paid off. I love this film. It has all the silliness I loved in the prequels and the seriousness I loved enough in the originals. It all forms one beautiful package that I will never get sick of watching. Funny thing, this was also the first movie that made me aware VHS' were being phased out in favor of DVD-only releases. Wouldn't be all that much longer before Blu-Rays starting entering the picture.

Anakin always cared about the Jedi way, it's the Jedi that didnt. He was manipulated and gaslighted into being evil. Also the Clones had chips in their heads that forced them to turn on the Jedi when Order 66 was issued. They didn't become stormtroopers tho

I grew up with the OT vhs movies, but I love the Prequels most of all, especially this one, both Trilogies are amazing, but this one just did it for me. Yes, I would love to see a 4 hour cut. Also the clone troopers are soon after replaced by normal humans, because the clones are expensive, but also because they had started becoming more independent and likely to disobey orders they don't agree with, becoming more human than the humans that were replacing them. Also also Inhibitor chips.

Important distinction to make, Stormtroopers aren't the same as Clone troopers. Clones were phased out shortly into the empire's reign and replaced with human recruits which is why they don't all sound like Jango Fett in the original trilogy

The Clone Wars series does a pretty good job of filling in some more details between episode II and III. Granted, some liberties may have been taken that don't jive 100% with the movie lore, but they're small and overall don't detract from enjoying anything. The last few episodes of the series are epic though. The theme, the story, and the music... perfection.
