The reason for that was boon wanted one extra character but they didn’t have enough memory I believe in arcade machines at the time. So they made it so Shang tsung could transform into other opponents to save on new movesets!!!!!

(probably gonna get some of the info wrong but here we go) fun fact: the reason Shang Tsung transforms into other fighters is actually due to the original game running out of memory. It's also the reason his base form doesn't move like others in the game. Whereas others would change pose with each frame, creating a steady movement, Shang Tsung is sorta just a floating JPEG wobbling around the screen. So to not have to create new moves or images of him, they gave him the power to transform.

I believe that Shang lived in Outworld for centuries due to his soul theft. Remember he had to keep up with Shao Khan, the tarkatans, the shokan, the centari, and the edenians, which are all humanoids with much larger lifespans

Deadly Alliance Shang reminds me of Vlad The Impaler's portrait. One of my favorite outfits for him he walways rocks Black Yellow/gold and Red just perfectly it's like Johnny with blue & black, or Kung Lao with Black, Turquoise and a red belt. And a cobra/snake theme suits him.

After all these years Cary Hiroyuki-Tagawa again proved how he perfected the slimey, dastardly evil persona of Shang Tsung. The performer for MK1 (2023) is a very close second. He must have been inspired by Cary because his performance is very similar. MK11 Aftermath and MK1 (2023) also further cemented Shang Tsung as the greatest Villain in MK History. Shao Kahn is the most iconic. But Shang Tsung is purely the best bad guy. 💯
