Visited Zhongdian/Yunnan almost 20 years ago. That time it was very quiet and we were the only tourist group there. I even bought a bangle with a stone from the temple as a souvenir blessing. That time the road was bumpy as they were still building an access road to Zhongdian. China is very beautiful and I love China.

If anyone thinks these people are poor then you only see with eyes . You need to see things with the heart . They are richer than the people that lived in today so called modern society. They lived in peace and enjoy every moment they have . They have no worry of Corrupt Politicians that constantly disrupt people's lives, no worry about crimes, no freaking tax, no bills or mortgage or rent and no filty garbage and pollution . No money can buy those things in today so called rich develope society... it's all hectic and Chaos, traffic jam, road rage, ethic hatred, political disengagement, riots, shooting, extortion, theft...it is hell..we ain't rich..they are with harmony .

Sorry - these people do worry about corrupt politicians who can disrupt their lives to the point of gov't leaders' pictures within their temples? They live where the gov't tells them they can - even at the beginning of this vid it was mentioned how the gov't came in and 'researched' the area and set it up as a tourist destination ($$ for the Gov't)... they have all the same issues of a 'modern' culture with no way to fight against them without any of the benefits. But they do choose to live together in harmony as much as they can - like most people who choose to live in rural areas of the world.

Did you go there? There are corrupt politicians, traffic jams, everywhere in the World. China is no exception. There are still tensions between communities. Don't idealise a country since you go there and talk to the people who live there. By the way, it's a nice country where you can meet nice people.

Thanks a million for this interesting report with details on the people in Shangri-La. Today, Shangri-La and its comparable places ( e.g. Bhutan) represent the richest areas on earth where happiness, compassion & the interconnected human spirit flourish. These settlements are found in a mystical, hidden landscape where nature is a blessing but also the major challenge to human activities (i.e. thin oxygen in high altitude air, potential earthquakes, bitter cold for 6 months of the year, ...etc). China is fortunate to have still pockets of communities like Shangri-La living with self sufficiency, sustainable agriculture & yak/sheep husbandry; & above all, peace, harmony & contentment. It is a blessing that they are not yet contaminated by the modern artificial concepts of wealth.

Water & Sky : Seriously,? You must be one of the paid hacks of the Chinese communist party. Remember China invaded Tibet and is still occupying it to-date. The local Tibetan people are being displaced, imprisoned in “re-education” camps, or forcibly relocated. China is a totalitarian regime with no regards for human rights that’s why a lot of rich Chinese people immigrate to the West.

In real life, Buddhists outside of Tibet have launched wars in India to spread Buddhism, but relative to other religions it was small scale and short-lived. So, for them warfare is a aberration in their history. I admire the Buddhist faith and try to incorporate some of the principles into my own life. If people lived as Tibetan Buddhists, we wouldn't have warfare, pollution or destructive animal husbandry.

Work is a good thing. That doesn't ruin the idea that it's paradise. In fact, without work, what are we to do? Work gives life routine and purpose. I wish I had meaningful work. However, Shangri-La & the likes of it ( e.g. Bhutan) represent the richest areas on earth where happiness, compassion & the interconnected human spirit flourish. Obviously, your concept of poverty & wealth are restricted to only money & material possessions ( i.e. artificial creations ). Yes, having money enables you to buy things which may help to make life a little easier (e.g. lessening demanding physical labour & time spent on chores). But endless material possessions have never been shown to add more happiness to anyone's life. That is why very wealthy and enlightened people such as Warren Buffet ( founder of Berkshire Hathaway, USA ) & Bill Gates ( founder of Microsoft) have chosen to give their money away. They are much happier being philanthropists. W Buffet leads a simple life & lives with basics. People in Shangri-La are very wealthy in their humanity & spirituality. Such quality of life can never be bought with money.

@@TriNguyen-ug1qv Tibet never been an independent country between 1911~1949 after Qing collapsed, they just like other warlords control couples of land in that period. As you are a Vietnamese, following you logic, is that TRUE for you that North Vietnam Occupied South Vietnam did NOT make northerns are owner? You may argue that NV and SV were one country before 1949, but hey, look further, Northerns also occupied south region in ancient time too. Think carefully before you talk.

Very interesting documentary, but absolutely no mention was made of the fact that China has militarily conquered Tibet and the native Tibetans are being shipped out of the area to other parts of China. At the same time, the Chinese government is shipping thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of Chinese people into Tibet, to be settled there. Muslims are also being heavily discriminated against, and what little freedom they have is being taken away. The government policy of China, admitted, or not, is to destroy Tibet's uniqueness, and make it just another part of China. This is no more than a piece of elaborate propaganda!

Before the Chinese took control of Tibet, missionaries and explorers described Tibet as an "open sewer." LIfe expectancy was 33 years, but has risen to 55 years under the Chinese. My wife was Tibetan, she told a different story, most of what people believe has been highly politicized. The story of Hawaii is strangely similar.
