Shannen Doherty Tears Up Over 'Downsizing' In Emotional Cancer Update

Shannen Doherty is sharing a bittersweet new outlook on life as she continues her journey with Stage 4 cancer. The "Beverly Hills, 90210" alum opened up about letting go of her material possessions, sharing in a new episode of her "Let's Be Clear" podcast that she's begun decluttering her home and storage units to hopefully ease the burden on loved ones if she doesn't survive her illness. "I know it's going to be hard on her if I pass away before her," Shannen said of her mother. "Because it's going to be so hard on her, I want other things to be a lot easier. Meaning that I don't want her to have a bunch of stuff to deal with." The actress went on to explain the emotional upheaval she's felt while facing this new chapter and how she's embracing the idea that she's simply making space for the things that will create lasting memories for her and her family. "I don't need this, it doesn't really bring me any great joy, but what does bring me great joy is taking my mom to the places that she's always wanted to go to," she added.

I’m currently in stage 4 ovarian cancer. I was diagnosed at stage two back in 2017. Then in 2022 it came back stage 4. I am currently in treatment again. At some point our bodies just become tired. We realize that all doctors can do is prolong our lives with clinical trials because there is no cure for stage four cancer. Shannen please know, you’re not alone. You are being a realist and you’re thinking ahead in reality. Not only am I in stage four ovarian cancer but I also lost my 17 year old only son 12 years ago so I understand all of this. Please know my heart and prayers are with you. You do what you must do to get through this life, and make it is simple as possible for those we leave behind. You’re a strong woman, Shannon, and an inspiring one. ❤ you are not alone in your fight. 🏋️‍♂️🎗️🥊

I am not dying of cancer but I did the same. I got rid of all my stuff and became a minimalist. If something happens I don’t want my people to have to go through my things and have to throw it out.

My husband and I are going through this right now with his mother. She lived in her home for over 60 years before going into an assisted living facility. She was a world traveler and always brought things back from her travels. Her house is packed to the rafters with things that only have meaning for her. We’re in the process of having an estate sale to get rid of all of it and use the money for her care. This experience has reinforced my desire to streamline my possessions to the bare minimum. In the end, it’s just stuff.

She’s stage 4 which is considered late-stage cancer. Not impossible but at that point the focus is on quality of life or prolonging life rather than “beating” cancer.

She's lucky she's living this long after the diagnosis... my mom got word she has cancer week later we find out it's right out through her whole body. There's nothing they can do three months later she's gone three months of hell, and I took care of her all the way through it. I don't wish cancer on my worst enemy the amount of pain she went through and PTSD. I still have from it. I could tell you some gruesome stuff, but I'll leave that out.

Cancer has brought your life into proper focus, good for you. Once you have done the work, you will feel free. I have done this also. My husband and I downsized considerably since buying our home in June of 2023. We have nothing in boxes, nothing in storage, nothing in our garage but our cars. We have a beautiful, organized, cozy home. We just didn't want to leave our son burdened with a bunch of stuff after we've passed. We don't even have a single junk drawer.

What a relief you must feel! I'm very organized, but I have so much stuff that I think it's overwhelming for me. I try to declutter every chancI get , and I gave those things to family. But it's hard to see your stuff go. I hope someday I have downsized until I'm in your place.

@gabye. my parents were hoarders, especially my dad. He just shopped and shopped! Drove them into massive credit card debt and 3 different bankruptcy. My great aunt was a MAJOR hoarder, goodness it was sooooo bad! I just don't want that for my son. I don't want us to pass away, and he's stuck with all our junk. Our house isn't empty by any means. We have stuff, but there is a place for everything. I wish you the very best. Just take one room at a time. Donate or throw away anything you don't love or you will never use. I donate a lot of stuff because I know others will be able to use it.

I agree with you Sylvia I want to do that in the next 3 years down size tremendously!! I have a huge house that not even my kids want to stay in. Once they left they never came back! I have so much stuff for my business that this house doesn’t even really feel like my home anymore, it is understandable why my kids didn’t come back. Life is too short to be stressed, unhappy, and burdened with stuff!!

My friend had stage 4 Myeloma cancer She went through chemo , had surgeries to remove tumors , and now today she is at stage 1 with only cancer cells that’s detected , God is good and he has the final word ,praying for her and anyone else who may be going through this ❤️🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿

Oh my sweet dear,I'm so so sorry. Shannen, u have been a huge part of my life starting in high school with watching 90210 and so on because the girls and I would all get together every Wednesday night to watch the show. And I'm 48 now I just lost my husband 2 years ago January after a heart condition we didn't know he had. We were together 25 years and Shannon was a huge part of that as well. Charmed was one of our favorites to watch together we watched it and even watched the reruns. You can imagine this big strapping beautiful man (inside and out) would be mortified knowing I was telling everybody this, yes it was Angel and Charmed together!! So I just wanted to say thank you Shannen so much for entertaining us all these years and I wish you all the best. All my love, support, and prayers to you and your family.😢

I had stage 4 Cancer it really scares the shit out of you. Its true what she said you want your family members not to take care of your things when your gone i had sold a lot of my things knowing your not going to be gone. Your try your best to show your family your ok and not hurting while your getting Chemo and othe treatments. But down deep inside your soul is in pain and your tired. I had b cell non- Hodgkins lymphoma stage 4 it was painful. I had to get chemo that went straight to my brain and to my bones.

As someone who has fought stage 2 triple negative BC a couple years back being diagnosed back in 2020 I know is how she feels. I’m scared everyday that cancer is going to come back because I have the same exact type Shannon has. I pray I get to say I’m going into into year 3 remission and they say usually if it’s going to come back it comes back within 1-3yrs and I’m terrified. 😢

I’m a retired nurse,five of my twenty year career were spent on an Oncology unit ,it’s been 44 years niw,I can still remember the names and faces of my terminally ill cancer patients. I admire Shannon for sharing this very horrific disease on a public platform ,we had to regularly attend work shops on the terminally ill cancer patients,how to speak to them ,their families etc.. One such work shop I will never forget ,the person speaking to us asked us to raise our hands if we were afraid to die there were about 300 of us Docs ,nurses respiratory techs.etc most of us raised our hands ,no the person said “It’s his we die”,it’s so very true none of want to suffer ,the right to die with dignity is a phrase I will never forget ,a patient looses so much if that in the fungal stage of their life .

My mom suffered from breast cancer..just came home from the nursing home/ rehab..my oldest sister has cancer....so..I'm not promising I won't cry listening to this...I just want her to know I'm a fan who cares...and she is still a beautiful and strong woman...still have her ingrained in my mind..Beverly Hills 90210..etc..young and building a career...I understand what she is doing..lessening burdens on loved ones...but...this is tough..I don't..know what else to say...there goes one eye...

The progress in fighting cancer is astounding.....if this was a mere 50 years ago.....anyone with Shannens dianosis statistics say would be dead in less than a year...maybe a bit more Evey year I hear Miss Doherty 45, 46,47,48 Miss Doherty age 50....Miss Doherty..51, and now 52. I'm very sad to hear this about Shannen. I was a young person watching 90210 back in the day and feel like the cast of that show were with me in very good times, bad times, etc.., but they were there with me. To hear she is facing this makes me very sad... Wish we could all help her somehow! To have seen her in her youth, growing up on TV with us all.. Feels like a friend is facing something difficult and you hate to see it... Praying for her!
