@@emilpashov1040 It's the exact comparison that needs to be made. Amateur competition is different than professional competition the same with boxing as it is for every single other sport. The pros have different rules, much better competition, more pressure, more adversity, require more mental strength...I can go on.

The greatest amateur boxer of all time ! The resume speaks for itself. He could have gotten a fourth gold medal (assuming he fought the way he did the last 3 olympics). Surpassing his 3 gold medals in the highest division of boxing will be hard to top. Let alone 20x + gold medals in the sport of amateur boxing...

@reynaldodanielhernandez36765 жыл бұрын
randy jonhson it's not the same being a good amateur as being olympic champion. The examples you gives were just "good amateurs". Savon was three times Olympic Champion. Teofilo Stevenson was also three times Olympic Champion and even better than Savon, he knocked out Tyrell Biggs and other good american amateur champions who later became pro. By that time there were also very good boxers from former USSR and eastern europe countries who did not jump to pro. Stevenson got his first olympic gold in Munich'72 when he was 20, the second in Montreal'76(24 years old)and his third Moscow'80 at 28. He didn't got 5 olympic gold medals deu to political boicots to LA'84 and Seoul'88 but he continued being the best amateur heavyweight of the world until he retired in 1989. It was normal to stay as amateur with more than 30 but he was the best since was 20, fighting against older boxers. Try to see him here in youtube and give your opinion.

@randy johnson Biggs was a good pro though, however he had substance abuse and mental problems and also was physically broken down by the Tyson fight. Still a successful career.

I'd imagine due to the fact they cannot fight at home. Always on the road, left family and friends behind. If they were allowed to fight and train and live in Cuba they would be unstoppable in the pros. Look at the world series boxing. No other country comes close

Rory Cunningham I believe that you are partially correct. I believe their expertise in boxing has to do with the popularity of boxing,no pro sports to compete with their boxing program for recruits the initial injection of Soviet sport expertise and adding their own unique twist. In addition to the extraordinary amount of experience their amateurs receive compared to some other countries. Especially the United States. Their transition to pro boxing has been especially difficult for most of them.
