Here is Part 1 of the 1907 Edwardian Jumper dress project (1 of 3, it looks like). This is turning out to be a fun project, trying to figure out how to balance my desire to occasionally make historical clothing, but also struggling to justify the time, energy and materials that go into something that I'll only wear once or twice a year. So in the end, I decided to sew a skirt that was the best of both worlds: could be a fun, discrete historybounding skirt for everyday wear, but could ALSO be turned into a full length, historically adequate (because I don't believe in full historical accuracy) skirt for the occasional photo shoot, historical event, or costume party!
All of this is coming out of my extensive research on Edwardian Jumper Dresses (or as some of you might call them nowadays, "Pinafore dresses"). I've always sewed in my underwear 😊 I don't have a tailors dummy and it makes fitting so much easier to be able to pop the make on and off as you go. Turns out it was quite a surprise the first time my boyfriend (now husband) saw this. 😂

As a Canadian, I can absolutely understand that roadwork notice. Not because I can actually read French, but because I have learned to cobble together my basic French vocabulary from elementary school with context clues. It's not pretty, but can get me by!

I kinda like that it gives me more control and not as much leaking (I swear, even pre-fall, my irons never hold water very well), BUT it is kinda annoying over the entire swath of yardage 😭

I have owned 2 good steam irons amd every other iron is better used with a spray bottle and no water in the iron. Wet cloth instead of a spray bottle sometime s

I have never had an iron that didn’t love to spit on my fabric at the most inopportune time, even the brand new ones. Hence the constant presence of a spray bottle on my ironing board. That way I can adjust the pattern of the spray to get just the right amount of moisture needed for the fabric being ironed.

Yeah, I actually prefer using a spray bottle (same as for my plants :D) because the spray function on my iron isn't as precise and adjustable

I often get sweaty/warm while sewing so I often do it partially dressed. If I’m seeing a garment than I’m definitely in the underwear for whatever it covers

I wish I could sew in my underwear. It would make multiple try ons so much easier. Unfortunately, my craft space is open to the rest of the house and I don't think my dad or brother would like me doing that 🤣 The skirt looks amazing!

The white trim looks fresh and crisp with the chambray, and the way you've turned this into a shorter stand-alone skirt is a clever way of getting maximum use out of your pattern. I've made a couple of Black Snail patterns and they're not for the faint-hearted or minimally experienced. The pattern maker is German, and seems to assume that you already have basic sewing skills and don't need detailed instructions except for unusual techniques (as does Burda Style Magazine). The English translation isn't the most clear or fluent. But the patterns are generally well regarded amongst historical sewists, and I was very happy with the final garments.

Thank you! 😊 I actually have more of the fabric left, though, in order to make the full-length, historical extension (which I just finished this morning, and let me tell you, it turned out SO seamlessly, it's amazing and I love it)! I actually found that the instructions pretty thoroughly covered some very basic stitches... like, if the placket instructions had been written in the same detail and clarity that the tutorial for "understitching" was, I don't think I have spent nearly as much time struggling over it!!

I somehow have managed to get even the two needle threads to go in before, but that's not necessarily something I would recommend trying... it definitely doesn't always work, and you could probably damage the needles if you went too hard!

Since you did your sewing room using found materials video, I've been slowly building my painting studio doing the same sort of thing, and using thrift store and found material as painting canvases as much as I can. It really adds another layer of pride to me when I am able to make something without waste or spending money.

I often sew in my underwear as well, be it the top half or the lwer half. And barefoot as well because it's the easiest way to find stray pins on my floor X) And for your struggle with pinning the curved box-pleats, I had the same with a project and I found that pinning over a curved surface, like a tailoring sausage (or a round pillow in my case), really helps smooth the process. It also works with darts.

Yes, really slippery materials could benefit from some basting, especially if you want the pleats to look good on the inside as well as the outside. 100% agree with your sentiments on there being no right or wrong way to sew if it works the way you intended it to!!

Nice job Shannon. Did you know that there is an exhibit in Lake Placid NY called Dressing the Abbey? It’s an exhibit of 35 costumes from the first three seasons of Downtown Abbey. I believe it will be there until September, so if you get a chance to day trip across the boarder I think you would truly enjoy it. There is a lot of information about the period, and many of the costumes were built with vintage textiles when possible. All the costumes can be viewed up close, not his is behind glass or roped off. I believe we will do some boarder crossing up to Quebec next Sunday and I may have to see if we can find a vintage fair to explore.

I have definitely read some interviews with the costume designer and it's always so interesting!! My heat erasable pens work just fine. Once washed, ink is gone anyways. I got mine from Amazon, 4 colos with refills.

With regards to the heat erase pens, use them but just do a test swatch with different fabrics incase the heat responsive chemical reaction that vanishes the ink reacts with the fibers/dye on it. all it takes is a little squiggle near the selvedge and a press to see if they're safe for any particular fabric. Second, the marks can return with cold but it takes a much longer time. If you have a repeat of your corset issue maximize the chilling effect by putting something solid on either side - a bag of frozen veg will work but better is just sandwich the fabric between two clean cookie tins and put it in - then wait overnight. The marks may return. It depends how cold your particular freezer is, and how much steam was used on the fabric, because that's another detail people overlook - Frixion pens in specific are also marketed for use on wet-erase stone paper and things like rocket books, The ink is water soluble and will wash out of many fabrics, (though again ink is a chemical and so is dye (yes even natural dyes) and those can be cross-reactive so sometimes they can stain.

Not me, right this minute, hand stitching wearing less than your average corgi because its so hot the mosquitos are taking PTO 😅😂 nah, you're not even remotely alone in that. Its just practical, and thats why door pants exist. A lovely skirt as always, I love the sort of prismatic weave of that linen. And I now see what went wrong with the closures on my walking skirt 👀🙏

I was making another skirt at that point and I *finally* finished it a few days ago. The closures went much better, just a bit wonky and have pulled out a bit to have that gap (which is fine, that opening is gonna be the pocket I forgot 🤪) which is many thanks to this vid in showing that difference 👏💖 I might scoot them back in a bit and try to secure them a bit better, so they don't slip again. Nah, they just disappear from about noon to 4pm, because its so hot 😂 then they s w a r m like an anime convention on a chinese buffet. I'm just the dork who likes sitting outside in the unholy swamp ass that is the summer afternoons.

That was a great video! Where else do you get to see someone ( no idea who) get stabbed in the eye. An indecisive dance, and a discussion about sewing in underwear lol! I don't for two reasons, I rarely make anything for myself and the big reason kids. Love the skirt! Really a beautiful creation! Looking forward to part two. I actually did this only the other day, while I would normally polish my halo and just re tread the trusty serger, I decided I would try the knot hack and while it’s not as brag worthy, my halo polishing does take longer if I tread from scratch. Ten out of ten, would do this again. 🎉

Every time i'm impressed by your dedication and passion, you wont stop figuring it out! 😁 Might give this skirt a try in the future, but without the backplaquet and maybe a invisible zipper instead. Cant wrap my head around the plaquet lol And btw, i think the machine topstitching around the pleats are looking great, so neat and a little touch of modern. I totally do the sewing in my underwear when I'm at a frequent fitting stage too! I do many more try-on's this way and save myself from mistakes I would otherwise have to unpick and redo. Not so great in the chilly winter months though, need to work out some kinda middle ground for that.

lol you should go watch the video where I tour the fabric warehouse and find the fabric, because (1) that warehouse has so much characters (2) the google reviews are fricking hilarious and I read the best of them and (3) when I talk about the chambray, I actually say how I don't love the fact that it's a chambray (although in retrospect it actually looks quite nice)!! I realized today I had watched the behind the scenes video to this project months ago, but I with my fatigue I didn't watch these 😅I really love how it turned out - from the blue with white detail colour scheme, to the length, to the box pleats (my favourite kind)! I can also be found sewing I my underwear, although if it's a hot summer day or night, I sometimes will change to a pull on dress so at least I have something to stop my sweaty legs from sliding me onto the floor 😆

I love the look of the closed box pleats over the hips that open out for fullness below. The only time I, a fellow Canadian resident, had my frixion pens return in the cold, was green felt tip pen on pale pumpkin linen cotton blend. It showed up as a whitish line but went away when laundered. (Also, yay for sponsorship! I'm still using IKEA cotton linens I bought with my staff discount 20 years ago, but I'm tempted by the colourful stripes that you chose.)

Yea, that's a solid point that it does sometimes leave a very faint white line - someone else mentioned this too, so it does always make sense to do a little test piece, especially if you aren't planning on washing the final garment! ....but now I want pale pumpkin linen in my life!!

When you use a spray bottle to dampen your fabric add a very little fabric softener to the water, it is especially good when ironing washed lined. It's what we used to do when I worked for Laura Ashley.

Unfortunately it also isn't great for the longevity of your fabric (and negatively affects their ability to wick moisture), so I tend to steer clear of it, both in my sewing room and my laundry room. But that's just my own personal preference; it probably creates a lovely soft texture to the fabric!

sewing in underwear is typical in the summer but for winter sewing clothes are fully donned between fittings and adjustments for the sake of warmth

I think I have the exact same iron, with the exact same problem. Spray bottles ftw! And yes, I do a lot of sewing in my underclothes. The pants stay on until I need to try on fit, and then they stay on the floor until I'm done or give up for the day!

Aaah, making do with irons... my current choices are the old one that doesn't steam anymore (last time I tried it tripped the reset on the GFCI receptacle it's plugged into) and a brand spanking new iron that has two settings: hot with constant steam, or not so hot with no steam, so because I have no control over the steam with that one, I need a spray bottle with either iron... That came out so cute! Love the trim! And I might have to try something like those box pleats sometime. Recently just did my very first skirt placket! Worked well except that of course my measurements lied so the hooks I put in are too loose so I just wore it with a safety pin holding it closed... I need to get a handle on that before I try a fancy one like that. And I just used an electric sewing machine for the first time in almost 3 years and boy is it fast! I'm making a mockup of a Victorian walking skirt for a friend, the one who gave me that machine (1960's Universal) for my birthday last year! I just did two mockups of the same skirt but drafted for me, one that fits at my "natural waist" (not at all where I want a waistband cause it's above the bottom of my ribcage, but I wanted to follow the directiosn properly at least once) and one where I took the waist measurement to be at my navel (where I actually want a weight bearing waistband) done on my hand crank machine, will see which one she thinks works better on me... and whether I need to make the darts a lot longer to accomodate my lack of hips. For hers, all I have to do now is iron it and then pleat it and get the waistband on. And no, you're not the only one who sews in their underwear when repeated fittings are expected. And I don't care if my neighbours get a show :P

I love the colors you used in your very nice, cool looking, modest, box pleated skirt. It looks very good on you. You need to make a matching blouse for that one piece dress look (that isn't joined at the waist). They are building houses behind me. I know the feeling. No one gets to sleep past 7 a.m. while construction is going on (six days out of every week). I have been known to remove my pants and sew in my underwear with a loose fitting house dress covering me. I like to sew in my sewing room with the window shades open for natural day light. The windows in my sewing room face the street.

I don't sew in my underpants, but I usually wear shorts under my skirts and dresses because of a) toddlers and b) a lack of desire to end up like Marilyn Monroe over a street vent. So trying them on over my clothes works for me!

I will sew in my underthings all the time. This cuts time down on changing all the time and also when it is just too hot in my office/crafting room. I will also work at my computer in my underthings if I get hot (I work from home and also work nights). I can take off any layers I want to when in my own home.

sitting in my office working on a sewing project using my heat erasable pen like always when you made the comment about the pen you were using. I use the exact same ones. I've got black and a few other colors because some fabric prints make black harder to see, and purple or red shows up better.

Yes, agreed that other colors are valuable - I'm on a tight budget, so for those tricky fabrics, I resort to my colored chalks (found thrifted), or some thread marking. But yes, I might eventually add some colored heat erasable pens to my collection eventually, they're so useful!

The fit on that skirt is a great balance between sleek hips and swooshy hem 👍 I'm so intrigued about the length extension! I've pondered this occasionally before, and I've seen other people do it but unfortunately either the results aren't to my taste, or the method isn't compatible with my patience. But you have formidable problem-solving skills and are stubborn enough to come up with a wearable solution that doesn't drive you insane to execute. Eagerly awaiting the answer! And OMG love the little corgi bed next to yours! I have two greyhounds, so they're relegated to their own beds at the foot of ours, but spouse is away this week so they'll be taking over the other half of the bed to keep me company 💜💜💜

That looks like a very pretty skirt, the nice colour coordination with the corgi is also Good. I tend to sew the last stage in underwear and a skirt with an elastic waistband, or a very loose top :) I have seen basting refering to very long machine stitches too, and the topstitching method described migth be nice to keep in mind for shifty pain in the ass fabrics.

I actually didn't iron this more than any other fabric, surprisingly!! I am pretty much a stickler about ironing while constructing the garment, and I didn't press it at all before filming the reveal and was genuinely surprised by how few wrinkles it had! And having just pulled out some pre-washed cotton from the same storage bin, I can confirm that I need to iron that before use too 😭🤣

Most cottons seem to do as they’re told (at least for awhile) if I’m stern enough with the iron, but I swear linen secretly crumples itself in a ball every time I look away or make a cup of tea. It’s just too sneaky for me! Well done on your A+ linen wrangler skills.

On heat-erasing pens: I've had mixed success and use them semi-regularly. My warning would be that sometimes they leave a noticeable residue so avoid using them in obvious ways on the fashion-side of the fabric. I think it is because they are designed for use on paper--so they "disappear" to a white shade when the friction of the "eraser" heats the ink up. When I use them on white or lighter fabrics I get great results. On patterned fabrics, they blend in. When I tried marking out some embroidery patterns or pleat placements on darker blue and green, not so much. They left light lines or a washed out look (when my iron steam accidentally spread the ink around. Interesting that the ink didn't reappear after your freezer attempt though. I have used that technique before after accidentally letting my embroidery sit out in some really hot sunshine. I did leave it in for an hour+ though and it was the red friXion pens, not black. Perhaps only some of the colors are more prone to re-appear?

Oh, that's so interesting. I admit to not having done a more conclusive study of the heat/cold issue besides the one attempt in the freezer for several minutes with the black ink on the purple fabric. And yes, that's a good point too about dark fabrics - I haven't had a problem with it yet, but I also always do a quick test just to make sure. Even on that darkish purple, no problems, but again, definitely worth testing out before going whole hog on the pens!

Oooooo. I got some fabric for a simple flowy knee length skirt and I've been trying to figure out a way to keep the swoosh but have it not gain any more on my hips. Might try some pseudo box pleats at least on the hips

sewing in undies! tick! If its a dress I usually just have bra and knickers on, if its chilly I throw a dressing gown over the top. Hmm maybe I should make a stylish and dramatic sewing gown! I think its because of the colour but I got some very Alice in Wonderland vibes from the skirt! Very curious as to how you are going to add length to it given all the finishing!

I have ALWAYS used a spray bottle for water when ironing. Because ALL irons eventually develop leaks. So I have no clue when they develop leaks, it doesn't matter. Spray bottle from the get-go.

If you have a Sally Beauty nearby, I recommend getting a continuous mist bottle (cheaper there than at the fabric store from what I found )

Those frixion markers can come back in the cold, but it has to get REALLY cold. Like waaay below 0 F; temperatures you probably aren't going to experience outside of an industrial deep freezer.

There's a joke in there about an iron that can't hold its water. I've gotten so used to funky irons that I use a spray bottle and/or presscloth by default. Easier to refill anyway.

Hello! I’ve got a Black Snail pattern too, the 1890’s Gentlemen’s Walking Trousers, and it’s definitely the most complex pattern I’ve ever used. Right now I have only cut out the pattern pieces out of paper, but there’s a LOT of pieces and it seems tricky! For some reason, your jumper dress makes me think of an Edwardian bathing suit, do you know when (what occasions etc) women would wear a jumper dress in particular? From the linen fabric choice, I’m assuming it’s a light summer dress, right?

Trousers usually aren't that hard to sew, but they probably have lots of little parts for facings and waistbands and such... just go step by step, and you should be fine! You got this!!
