shapeways in the early days was transparent on their pricing, with published formulas you could follow as guides to reduce printing cost for your models. Then they raised prices and eliminated the pricing transparency, which annoyed a lot of us. And it's been a downward slide since.

The challenge of a service bureau is finding the right customers with the right product. I ran a Computer Output Microfilm service bureau for years 1973 to 1991 until we were purchased by another company. Eventually technology changed and we pivoted to digital output, CD/DVD and web based. Something is always changing, you have to be ready and plan for it

I used Shapeways for all my 3D printed parts many years ago, prior to getting my own printer. When I had a lot of similar parts to print a couple of years back and couldn't be bothered with the hassle of printing them myself, for some reason, Shapeways never entered my head. I got a price from one of the Chinese companies, and when that was too expensive, I just went ahead and printed them myself. It was after I finished I wondered why I never thought about Shapeways. I think, maybe, 10+ years ago, they were advertising to consumers more.

I became aware of shapeways when I was more into model railroading than 3d printing. As I understood it the items listed there had to be exclusive to their service. I really don’t like that idea. I want to buy files and then either print them myself or find a company that will print one. In my opinion this will probably be a win for a lot of smaller hobbyist communities.

When I saw what China was putting out in 3D printed items and cost I knew it was the end for companies like Shapeways, there are 2 large PCB makers that will print in anything from metals, to nylons and other exotic materials cheaply and send it to you in a week.

The leak was wild, Seeing Johnathan Levi break his NDA then go after everyone who called him out on it like he was the victim. Wild time lol. The recall is a great move as that machine, while it can be great, seemed to be released heavily untested unlike the X1C.

I know you wanted to put a diamond back on your magneto X and you also mentioned trying out vision minor nano polymer on it. You should try putting the open source AMS (blanking on the name right now) on it and maybe a few other upgrades and do a video on all of them.

You nailed it toward the end. I have a WUXN WXR which is an awesome first machine (I'm a newb),,, but their customer service it horrible and hence why I'm switching to Prusa. If you are going to sell products and don't have a solid customer support system in place, you can't last. People like me who want to support US companies will put up with the drop of the ball here and there, but at the end of the day I'm also running a business and waiting around for days for someone to return an email is going to make me jump ship.

Damn. I was just thinking about this the other day. I was thinking I should try new filaments outside of my normal/ go-to stuff. Because some filament brands might become rare as in not made anymore because the market is going thin out I feel. Unfortunately, I only see this happening more as time goes on and the industry thins out. It’s a good thing and bad thing I guess depending on how you look at it but it is truly sad to see businesses that care about their product go under.

Except for the most specialist of materials and parts I have no idea why any R&D, Engineering Dept would use a printing bureau, well not unless such bureau was literally next door to you, when they could have it all in house especially for prototypes. I thought of using a bureau when I first started designing products but when I saw the prices I was going to pay for very basic and small parts I bought an X1C. After realising how many iterations needed to get to a working part and the time it would have taken if done by a bureau It would be very unproductive and likely I would not be able to produce 1 product a year let alone a month!
@3DMusketeers

Powder printing like sls and MJF is too pricey for most and the specialized rooms needed can be a pain, even then ignoring the cost of the people to run it. Your Bambu can't compete with powder, not for strength, quality, speed, any of it. But cheap powder printers are around 20k ish, so it's a different ball game. Likely you saw stratasys pricing for fdm, because that's what you need for industrial stuff, where having tractability is a big deal. Home gamers dont need that, and that's fine.
@logicalfundy
@logicalfundy 27 күн бұрын
Makes me wonder what will happen with Slant 3D. I know they're pretty bullish on printing as a service being big, but it's becoming easier and easier to do printing in-house. I do agree that's how the times are changing, and I think the future is having 3D printers if they are useful for your business. It's kinda the Star Trek dream of having replicators, you know?
@_droid
@_droid 27 күн бұрын
The only way they're going to survive is if their filament manufacturing comes to fruition (very unlikely at this point) or they pivot in to markets that actually make sense. FDM as a service is on life support.
@3DMusketeers
@3DMusketeers 27 күн бұрын
Finding the right clients is key. We have a few clients, pure fdm, that are 5-15k/yr each with little to no upkeep. Been clients for years, happy with pricing, quality, etc. that's what you need to survive lol. More of those. And we buy filament at retail pricing these days. No room for big inventory. I agree that traditional fdm as a service to the general public is dying, but it's also dying because there is always someone willing to do it cheaper. But that's business.

We are not (currently) getting paid by Printed Solid, however have accepted sponsorship money in the past for our SMRRF trip, but I was using their materials for YEARS before we even asked for this. We wanted a few rolls to give away on streams, we were told we could give away more. I dont see the problem in wanting to give away free filament with no strings attached and how that, in any way, that we are like Loyal, because he certainly was not the first to give away filament. The demise of Shapeways is certainly a bummer, but it doesn't move my personal needle like the Micronics team selling out to Formlabs. If (and that's a big, big if) the Micron were ever to go to market, it's now a $10,000 printer at the very least instead of a $4,500 printer...as the Prusa Tax exists, so does the Formlabs tax. It'll be more robust, with better support and better packaging, but it won't be attractive to the prosumer market any longer. Again, this assumes Formlabs didn't buy Micronics to bury the competition and/or simply incorporate the best ideas of the Micron into future $50,000 printers. I'm sure a forthcoming video will detail the huge knock that acquisition is to the concept of democratized, accessible SLS printing, and I won't belabor that point here. What I will belabor is how disappointed I am that they're packing up shop and moving to Formlabs' mothership in Massachusetts. Wisconsin, my beloved home, has the potential to be a center of additive manufacturing excellence - VO3D is doing neat things with material properties, the Virtual Foundry lets people print metals and ceramics on their cheap consumer printers, Fusion Filaments seems to be one of the only manufacturers of the excellent HTPET material, GKN Sinter Metals has a large facility in Manitowoc, Coex3D has made white label filament for DuPont for years...and we could have been the home of consumer-grade SLS printing as well. But they took the money (even if the Formlabs stock options don't fully vest for a few years, as was claimed in their recent video) and ran. That chaps my ass, to be quite honest.
