Oh, so punny, I kill me.... So, this video we compare Shapr3d for the iPad Pro with OnShape's iPad application and decide which one we like more (or less) and why. So the real question is, can you really do CAD 3d design on an iPad ?!?... Sure, watch to find out what I have to say about it.

i believe shapr3d has licensed Siemens parametric modeler. Shapr3d is more of an interface to a very complicated and capable cad engine. Which means it will grow crazy fast in term of features because most of it is already build in the Siemens engine.

I have used both but I would sayl Shapr3d has really hit the mark and the dug i to the potential of the ipad pro as a pro cad device. It also that keeps getting better every 14days with regular updates and new features. In a year since this video was madd it has changed alot and it’s just keeps getting better. USDZ export, SVG import, lidar scanning and AR view should be just around the corner.

Hey, thanks for the review. Actually you *can* import STEP, IGES and Parasolid files, so there is a way to go back to Shapr from your other CAD system ;)

Yes I did kind of glaze over that.. I don't consider that a natural workflow... I am glad it is there! And its definetly a value add! but as far as a usage case, I would only export/import when I knew I was going to spend quite a bit of time in one environment or the other, as (for me) exporting out of Fusion isn't speedy (as the cloud processing takes time) and importing into Fusion isn's speedy (for the same reason) and then there is time importing and exporting, and moving the files about.. I could easily see the act of "moving" a model from Fusion to Shapr or Shapr to Fusion taking over 5 minutes.. Which is a significant jump from 10 seconds or so to just "open" something... But yes, if someone were going to spend 3 hours in Shapr3d on the couch or because that part of the model was easier to work out in Shapr then its worth it... But as a ubiquitous "I pick it up and there my work is" experience, that it is not..

Great video I am someone who draws 3D models just as a hobby though, using SketchUp Pro an older version since now it is a streaming version where you have to pay, they have a free version that is pretty water down. I do enjoy the interactions I see with shapr 3D. Again great video. If you ever feel like it I would like to see in the future using shapr 3D but in a slower pace.

Onshape is free for hobbyists. So it depends on your level really. I'm learning cad at the minute, on shape runs great on my laptop, and my tablet. I can't find another cad package that let's me practice on a computer and tablet for free.

Onshape makes all your designs public domain, which means that although you cannot patent them, you can use them commercially. Regardless of the license agreement says in the previous section about non-commercial use, the later section of the same agreement states they are public domain and can be used for commercial use by anyone. Anyone includes you.

Good review, however I think Onshape would argue that the subscription is for the full web browser version and you get the iPad version for free. It’s a shame Shapr don’t have a web version or Fusion a proper iPad version. Onshape need the competition to keep there pricing honest. It’s already heading the way of solid works :(

I understand what all comes with OnShape, and yah it is "technically" just a free extra to do iPad modeling.. But compared to an AutoDesk Fusion 360 offering their desktop offering has a bit to go for that price point. I don't want Shapr to go away or get hurt by this suggestion, but if I were AutoDesk I would be thinking real hard about just buying them.. But Shapr is based on a Seimens CAD engine so that may sound better on paper than it practically is to implement..

Yes. On a iPad bro with at least the A12 bionic chip. You can import a full rocket engine with all it's individual parts and it will work just fine. Though it's advised not to have any cpu & Gpu intensive apps in the background such as 3D games or PowerDirector or something.

Shapr3D doesn't support parametric modeling, that right there is a non-starter for me. Fusion 360 does, but it is clunky, buggy (I have to restart it every 20 minutes because random basic functionality just stops working, and it crashes a few times a day), and lacks some features OnShape has like using measurements as parameters, but as a startup you can use it for free (you have to apply). Then there is OnShape, another parametric CAD app, not buggy and clunky as Fusion, but holy crap, $1500 a year? They do have a program for startups though, you can apply and get OnShape Professional for free. Solidworks is another option, they also give it for free to startups (revenue less than $1M) but no MacOS support. I could run it on my Windows desktop and Remote Desktop to it from my Mac, but then I'm afraid the user experience will suffer (trackpad gestures, etc.).

Thanks for the comparison, however I missed the part where you pointed out that Onshape is a full business solution type of software which can also be accessed via PC or MAC and offers way more possibilities in terms of assembly - joints and most important parametric design where the solids are actually driven by the sketches and will change the solids accordingly if well modelled - also one more thing: with the only drawback that your files are public, you get the full set of features with Onshape From my point of view: I like both and each for different reasons - who ever reads this, check out the free versions of both and either buy shapr3d ore use the free version of Onshape because for a hobbyist Onshape’s full version is way to expensive (but also not needed)

There aren't a lot of options in this space right now.. I 100% agree a mouse and a keyboard are FAR faster tools.. But I can see valid casual CAD uses... That being said, I agree the price is pretty steep... Wish Autodesk would buy them and integrate with Fusion, but that likely won't happen as I think Shapr3d is based on some Seimens or Emerson Technology or something deeply industrial... But who knows... (well I guess they do ;-)..)
