Shaq has shown throughout his entire adult life that he’s more than willing to coast by on his innate ability rather than take steps to become better. Christian Wood is way, WAY better than Rui. Rui really isn't very good. He had one good half of a season shooting last year on low volume. He's an overall net negative player. He's a very poor defender, doesn't add much offensively as a stretch big, no playmaking and is a below average rebounder for a supposed PF. Oh and he's yet to play 60 games in a season and won't this year either. As a Wizards fan, I'm happy to move on and don't care we didn't get much. He's just a name because people liked him coming out of college a few years ago and has been playing anonymously in DC where no one sees him not developing.

That’s way over critical of Rui. Rui is a quality bench player. He has a promising mid range game, he is far from “a very poor defender”. He’s not a bad defender, he’s good from 3 at certain spots, solid overall, good size, very young still, and yeah bc of his injury and the emergence of Kyle Kuzma his opportunity kind of came and went. I think he will likely become a quality starter. Your comment is if you focused and kind of exaggerate every negative aspect of a player and leaving out every positive about them. To say Christian Wood is “WAY WAY better than Rui” is absolute laughable😭 ….🤡 talk. He’s 3 yrs older, and only Moderately better

The funny thing is that what he basically said is: I have no idea about the nba. NBA has 500 something players, when you know 10 of them you basically have no idea what is going on and we shouldn't even listten to your opinion.

The problem with his comment is it’s simply not true. He just chose to shit on Rui for no reason. You think Shaq doesn’t know Porzingis, Buddy Heild, KCP, Marcus Smart, etc etc. None of those guys are too ten players but if they end up in a trade his reaction wouldn’t be the same. I don’t get why old guys shit on young guys when they should be building them up.

I’m sure he knows the name, but how much does he truly know about them as players really? Probably very little. When he said he only knew the top 10 guys I think he meant he only knows their games in detail
@jkdaprynce
@jkdaprynce Жыл бұрын
Even still, you think Shaq only knows those others guys I mentioned only by name? Shaq definitely knows role players games. But to make such a bold statement about only knowing the top ten players when anyone who can think for themselves knows that’s not true is insane. Not knowing Rui’s name or game is one thing, had he just left it at that it would be more understandable. But Shaq definitely knows role player strengths and weaknesses, making a bold statement like that when it’s a lie just feels like an unnecessary jab at Rui.

Just to emphasize your point: Dwight Howard is a future 1st ballot Hall of Famer and arguably a top 50 player of all time, but because Shaq has spent the last 15 years clowning the dude, now even the league thinks Dwight is a bum because no one signed him this season even though he's still a great role player and he was left off of the 75 team, the same team that has *Carmelo Anthony* in it. You can legitimately make the argument that Shaq's shortcomings as an influential member of the NBA media has ruined the reputation and career of one of the game's all-time greats (I know that Dwight had his missteps as well but it shouldn't have been enough to ruin his legacy).

I think what he contributes from this point forward will establish whether Shaq is right or not to not know who he was. If he does nothing of note, it’s not quite as disrespectful. Jeremy Lin being unknown to Kobe Bryant comes to mind.

@jamesmarshall6619

Thing is former players are usually the worst at being analysts. Being an analyst requires developing a skill set to breaking down players strengths and weaknesses, schemes, how teams employ those schemes, how teams counter those schemes, etc. It's not as those players can't do it, they often did it while playing, it's just that once they stopped playing they stopped putting in the work and get overconfident in their opinions because they played. Being a former player doesn't mean you're good at analyzing a game just like being a former player doesn't mean you'll be a good coach or GM. Each job requires a different skills so that's why I scoff at people who say "he played the game" because it doesn't mean that much in a job where you're supposed to be analyzing the game. Being a former player can be enormously helpful in informing your analysis but that is just one aspect that can assist, you still need to put in the work to be good.

Sorry, forgot to comment about the actual video. A very well made piece with a somewhat unusual subject. You bring up some great points. One of them being that JJ Redick is bringing more nuance and actual basketball insight with more respectability and accountability to basketball media. This is a great development. I think it has to do mostly with new media clashing with old media. These days, most, if not all of the old media content is very basic entertainment and drama. But due to content being way more democratized, being easier and cheaper to produce, we have many alternatives and it results in more quality, more diverse approaches and opinions and more professionalism. The good channels get more views and grow, supported by algorhythms, viewer count and support and (as a result) more money. Compare one of Alexhoops video breakdowns or Thinking basketball to any of the old media analysts on ESPN, the difference in quality and knowhow is insane. Even just our good friend Jacob sitting in a chair with a phone or a baketball in his hand has so much more interesting things to say than a bunch of old celebrities that mostly goof around. We are living in a new age, where the old media slowly dies and the new media takes over. Thank you for sticking up to Shaq and for the interesting video.
