Because the false idea around eating and getting into good shape that only calories matter. People now correlate healthy with numbers of calories.

Same with low fat because people think fat makes you fat but we need fats in our diets and there are healthy fats. In reality sugar is what is making them fat, not the actual fat or even the calories, unless they are eating way above their caloric intake then everything just isn't helping.

You are absolutely wrong about calories aren’t making you fat. You can eat literally a tiny surplus of 100 calories per day and not burn it off and in 35 days that’s a pound of fat. This is coming from someone who has lived in a body of 35+ body fat % and is now in 10% body fat range. I still eat probably 150g+ of sugar 3-4 days a week. Literally the only thing keeping my weight in check is my 5+ days of cardio a week burning between 150-500 calories and my weight+calisthenics training. Also yes, sugar is likely causing you to gain weight because of calories. Sugar is so packed with calories per gram and it is extremely unfulfilling and addicting causing you to over consume it. At the end of the day, you’re gaining weight because you’re consuming excessive calories. Most people underestimate how much calories they are actually eating. Eating a salad with ranch? Most people put 3x the serving size which will net you 500+ calories and you’re still hungry. Cooking healthy veggies with olive oil? Yeah that olive oil while having healthy fats, it isn’t calorie free just because you can’t really taste it and use it mostly for the non-sticking property.
