Sharmila Tagore and Konkona Sen Sharma talks about what sets art cinema apart from mainstream cinema, what it takes to nurture creativity and imagination and their ingress to cinema, with Shoma Chaudhury at Algebra, The Arts & Ideas Club, Gurugram on 20-August 2107.
Both the actors have marked a dent in cinema with their extraordinarily distinct and diverse performances.
Sharmila Tagore’s advent in cinema is marked by her role in avant-garde filmmaker Satyajit Ray’s film, Apur Sansar, which was followed by significant roles like that of the child bride in Devi. Even though she ventured into mainstream Bollywood cinema, she kept going back to Ray’s parallel cinema. Despite a lot of raised eyebrows, she felt this was the only “natural progression”; that of moving from regional to a pan-Indian visibility.
Konkona Sen Sharma, daughter of renowned Bengali actor Aparna Sen, is known for her unusually bold and progressive roles. She’s a woman of seemingly unmatched calibre not just as an actor but also as a director now with the release of her directorial debut, A Death In The Gunj, in the genre of realism.

Algebra takes the idea of a club - a universe of the likeminded - and expands it to new paradigms. The key idea behind Algebra is to bring together a fellowship of people who believe great cities are built not just on infrastructure but a life of the mind; who understand robust and liberal societies need the oxygen of great conversation and nuanced thinking. At a time when we are increasingly surrounded by rage and noise, Algebra is that unique live and continuous space where people could go for a genuine exchange of ideas and exposure to issues; where new seeds could be sparked, fresh perspectives formed, and intelligent connections made.
Algebra - the Arts and Ideas Club is designed to host over 60 conversations over the year with topline thinkers and practitioners from almost every discipline that impacts human affairs: politics, economy, environment, spirituality, cinema, medicine, science, technology, music, media, literature, the arts, sports, people’s movements, et al. In a line, Algebra is a space where one can meet an exciting, cutting-edge spectrum of people shaping the world in different ways. Where one can test one’s ideas, challenge one’s perspectives, and build friendships. A sort of fellowship of the curious and engaged.

Sharmila Tagore's answer to how cinema has evolved , her references to contemporary events, and the words she chose to put all these in a nutshell, is simply splendid. There couldn't have been a greater slap to the Indian mentality of 'actors are educated '. An erudite woman indeed! Konkona, as usual, is amazing ❤

Sharmila commenting on Satyajit Ray's style of handing handwritten "screenplay" to each actor. Just hearing this narrative one can realize (sense) the greatness of Satyajit Ray.

Address them and their relatives respectfully. Calling them sharmila, Aparna or Tiger very callously won't bring you extra points. This is not a family gathering. Add some prefixes like Mr/ Mrs./ Madam/ Miss ... whatever...before addressing any person. ..

what a waste of bringing two amazing women together. it should have been more conversational than throwing them questions that are more suitable for one-to-one biographical interviews. i was so looking forward to a dialogue between the two women, but the anchor failed to enable that

I totally agree with you. I mishandled that conversation and should have enabled much more dialogue between them.

I have an Immense respect for konkona and but no respect for Ayesha Begum. She talks big BUT she doesnt realise that we all know her past . Atleast Manick das legacy was not for conversion. In bengali films apart from Rays side roles as a heroine she was nevr casted in any Top Class bengali film neither a family girl nor the smita patil or shaban azmi class. That is eminent when Rituparno Ghosh and Goutam Ghosh never casted her anymore. Please get someone more sensible whose own life is a live example when they talk so much Intellectuallity . By the way please let her know Kashmir and Assam is NOT only India . Neither is Urdu the only language .
