I hardly doubt the people that can’t seem to watch the whole video will read the description but I’m gonna, Say it again even though I do not like repeating myself. This is not a lifestyle……. You must switch your transfer case into neutral if you are towing an all wheel drive vehicle. Or put the vehicle in neutral….
If you have a switch that allows you to disengage the Transfer case you need to put it neutral, If you were towing for great distances you need to have your driveshaft removed or You need a differential disengagement installed. someone that didn’t watch the WHOLE Video needed to make sure that they told me…. If the transmission is working properly it should be fine to tow the vehicle up to 100 miles but I can’t guarantee that it won’t hurt your transmission.. Like Some of us didn’t already know…….. Thank you person I’m going to leave nameless…
Today we're going to talk about how to use a tow bar, and why this tow bar method can work for just about any vehicle EXCEPT RV TOWING. Using a tow bar is quite easy , but I'd like to explain how and why it works.
So in this video we are picking up a new project for the show called the Yeti Jeep And I thought this would be a good opportunity to show people how I use a Tow bar. And why you could use it on just about ANY type of vehicle. I also explain to you why this tow bar method works and show you that you can tow your car or truck by yourself without buying expensive brackets if you’re only towing it once or twice. This is not a lifestyle though if you’re towing it behind an RV you need to get the correct brackets specifically made and designed for the model that you’re towing but if you’re doing it once or twice I’m sure this will service.
I did not give a visual description on how to place the brackets on different models if they have a curved bumper but if you think about it just put some washers behind the bracket and make sure the bracket is pointed somewhat straight and you’ll be able to hook up the bracket to anything once you remove the bumper cover removing the bumper covers on different makes and models is usually very very similar and rather easy.
Hope you enjoy the video and it gives you more confidence that you will be successful and able to get whatever’s broke down to the place you need to go God bless and enjoy the video

This is an absolutely outstanding video. Friday I have to tow a 3500 lb truck with a 4000 lb truck, and have been calling U-Haul and all kinds of companies trying to rent a tow dolly and they are trying to get me to rent a truck from them saying the tow dolly is not sufficient enough to pull it. It. I looked up tow bars, all kinds of other things. And came across this video when I searched how to connect the tow bar to my truck. Due to your amazing comments about President Trump and how you didn't like him at first. But you did like to feed your family, I am now subscribing. Not only was this a very helpful video for what I needed it for, but I'm a hands-on kind of gal. So this is not intimidating for me at all. Thank you so much for all the information!!! You look forward to seeing many more videos.. EDIT: Shared this on my FB to get you more subs!! Around here we call those "Mexican Trains" you see them everyday after 5PM on 65 going southbound. Saw two that impressed me the other day, a V6 Camero flat towing 8000lbs worth of 2 Dodge caravans. And a Dodge caravan towing 2 more dodge caravans behind it, that's 12,000 lbs train with brakes rated for 5500 lbs GVWR. Smdh The state troopers LOVE to see those rolling through their country. lol

About 20 years ago i towed a 1970 VW bus using a tow bar, with a 1971 VW bus. Worked like a charm, i would like to apologize to the woman whose front yard i had to use to get on the turnpike after missing the entrance. You can't make as tight a turn as you would without being connected via towbar.

@@ShellyspurrSure they do. The bumper itself is steel, but you have to remove the exterior plastic bumper cover to get to it. The bumper cover typically has a Styrofoam inner core that stays in the cover as well. You need to remove the plastic cover from pretty much every bumper to use a tow bar and bolt the brackets to the metal.

Great stuff. I actually towed a crown Victoria about 5 years back with one of these and mounted the tow bar attachments under the bumper and accidentally totaled my crown Victoria. It ripped off during a turn and flew into a ditch and it was a slow turn so naturally I’ve been skeptical. But this video made me pretty confident in towing again. Thank you!

Outstanding video, you explained everything very well! Last year I flat towed my 04 Civic 600 miles with my 05 Civic using a Harbor Freight tow bar on its bumper bar like you showed and magnetic lights on the back and it worked great other than the towed car trying to wander around because its steering and suspension was in bad shape at the time. I'm sure now that I rebuilt the 04's steering and suspension and it drives correctly it would tow well if I ever need to tow it again.

I was a little confused on the all wheel drive part . So what your saying is that it’s safe to use the tow bar on it as long as it’s on neutral
@sharpcarco
@sharpcarco 6 ай бұрын
Well, as long as the very short distance, and all four wheels are on the ground like in my situation, everything should be a neutral. The only problem is that the transmission pump does not pump unless the engine is not running so whenever possible it’s always best to remove the driveshaft if possible.. and especially if you’re going to great distance, I would say if you’re going any further than 20 or 30 miles it’s better to flatbed it or use a wheel dolly with wheel dollies on the back

You could have gotten a different hitch that was level pretty cheap from harbor freight. Also not near as concerned about pulling something as I am stopping it. Back roads and slow speeds may get it, but no place to be on the highway, especially in traffic when you have to make a hard unexpected stop to avoid rear ending someone. Have you checked to see if this is covered by your insurance?

That is the most ridiculous comment I saw all day. The plastic cover most definitely will not hold up to the stress of pulling the car by it, you almost certainly won't be able to get the nut on the back of the metal bar with the cover on, you could easily damage things behind the cover by blindly drilling into it, and having plastic and likely foam between the tow bar's brackets and the metal bar would be extremely dangerous since it's so soft. If it squishes down as you drive, the nuts will come loose. Towing is not the place to be lazy or shortcut things to your convenience.

I didn’t get the part about the transmission being lubricated when the engine is not running I thought you had to be a battery operated transmission pump or certain vehicles had special electronic apps to circumvent that?
@sharpcarco
@sharpcarco Жыл бұрын
When the engine runs the transmission pump runs pumping fluid to the critical parts of the transmission When you’re towing a vehicle, even when the vehicles in neutral parts of the transmission are still spinning on the inside But they’re not getting lubricated properly That’s why it’s best to remove the driveshafts, so the transmission internals are not spinning . In this video, I did not do any of that. I pulled it with everything spinning on the insides of the transmission which are not good for transmission. However, I did put it in neutral, and it didn’t seem to have an effect, but I can’t guarantee that it won’t in your situation Point of the video is that you can cost-effectively tow a vehicle anywhere without a tow truck and the other point of the video is to show you how the vehicle turns when you’re using a tow bar

In the south, I see people do it all the time it is the craziest thing I’ve ever seen somebody pulling two vehicles with one seems pretty dangerous to me, but they do it. As far as backing up goes, I don’t recommend that because when you hook it to the bumper like I did, it will bend it .

I recommend removing the driveshaft before you do it, but pay close attention to the part of this video where I show you why pulling something with a tow dolly is not really a problem… there are particular procedures though for a rear wheel drive vehicles I think you need to hold the steering wheel with the safety belt but it’s been so long since I towed a rear wheel drive vehicle with a tow bar I don’t know that I ever did it before. So just a smidge more of research will make you feel more confident I’m certain you can do it. I don’t think there’s gonna be any problem, but less be a little bit more cautious, and will be assured success.

I hope a stupid people doesn't see your video. I can see things going bad for some people. I wouldn't recommend doing this on a 2003- 2006 honda crv. You will lose the towed vehicle. You need to make brackets or buy a base plate setup from a dealer. For the Honda crv. Your video was well put together and informative.
@sharpcarco

Well I see where you’re coming from. And I may have mentioned a small amount of this in my video… Obviously this video requires a small amount of ingenuity. And of course I’ve never towed a Crv so I can’t say for certain it would work…… in that situation….. although I’ll bet you that I could figure out a way to make it work. That not only is safe but cost-effective. Every vehicle that I’ve tried this on has worked. There’s no substitute for using the proper equipment on anything or in any situation. But there’s a lot of poor people out there and I’m one of them so I try to do things as inexpensively as possible any rich person will tell you it’s not A million dollar home or jet that will make you go broke ……. it’s eating out at fast food restaurants every day or spending every single dime and dollar when you’ve got accomplishing a task that you’re gonna do one time and may never have any additional use in the future… nickels and dimes add up to serious dollars!!!! I would give people more credit they’re not quite as stupid as some people think they are……. Trust me the weak minded ones know not to do certain things even though they’re weak minded…. The idea is to inspire and empower the rest of humanity to do things that they never thought were possible.

I want to tow a front wheel drive vehicle (Honda Odyssey) a long distance-1000 miles. I had heard you aren’t supposed to use a tow bar but rather a tow dolly to keep the front wheels from constantly spinning which will destroy the transmission. You addressed the issue of AWD and RWD about disconnecting the driveshaft. I’m assuming from your video that it’s OK to tow a FWD vehicle without doing anything other than putting the car in neutral and leaving the key in the ON position-correct?
@sharpcarco
@sharpcarco 2 жыл бұрын
You definitely have to use a tow dolly for that. And yes I talk about that in the video . Sorry I did not address the front wheel drive version. Even though I believe you could probably tow that thing like 20 to 30 miles and it would probably be OK depending on the speeds that you were going without a tow dolly but in your situation you definitely don’t want to do that with that vehicle really sucks I wish they had a way that you could disconnect the front driveshaft and tow it without it being a lot of work. Obviously if Took the front driveshaft it would be NO problem whatsoever and you could use a tow dolly and it would work really really well. But I don’t know your level of mechanical experience so if that’s not something that you’re familiar with you may find it to be somewhat of a challenge but then again I’m sure there’s plenty of videos to show you how to remove the drive shafts then you would just take them out and leave them out but I don’t know if it would be worth the expense that it would cost you to rent a tow dolly. I would say if I told Allie was gonna cost me $400 to rent I would probably consider doing it

@@sharpcarco Thank you for your quick reply. I’m skilled at removing the CV drive axles but didn’t want to do that if it wasn’t necessary. I see a lot of cars being towed behind motor homes or RVs using a tow bar. I’m fairly certain that many of them are FWD. But I can’t believe that the cv axles have been removed.
@sharpcarco
@sharpcarco 2 жыл бұрын
That’s a very valid point I can’t imagine that all of them people do that either. It might be possible that I don’t understand the front wheel drive transmission the same way as the rear wheel drive transmission because of how the axles actually go in on the same side so it is possible that with the vehicle in neutral does not spin the gear the same way unlike a rear wheel drive engine that Hass to transfer energy completely through the transmission a front wheel drive transmission may not work the same way. I’m not a transmission expert for sure hell I’m not an expert at anything 🤔😂 i’m just an OK editor….. Anyways I appreciate the kind words and welcome to the channel we’re very happy to have you let me know what you find out with that situation…. I’ll do some of my limited investigation as well…

Great video. Very informative but I must ask… I’m about to tow a 3/4 ton G20 van from Mississippi to Arizona on a 5,000 lb tow bar from harbor freight. Do I need to drop the driveshaft or do I just put it in neutral? Also, I lost the key to the van and had to break the steering lock. Will this be a major issue for me while towing? These sound like dumb questions when read aloud but your input would be appreciated nonetheless. Btw, I liked, subscribed, and watched the video a few times. Interesting strategy to boost the funding. 😂
@sharpcarco
@sharpcarco 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Dayton, sorry but Drive shafts have to go . I don’t know too much about the steering wheel being locked. Have you ever noticed how when a tow company told your vehicle they put the safety belt around the steering wheel? I’m sure there’s a reason for that and I’m assuming it’s so if the steering accidentally came unlocked so I would recommend doing something to rectify that problem before you go I would probably consider replacing the steering column personally. Technically it’s not supposed to go kitty Wompus on you but there’s a lot of mountains through there and I wouldn’t risk it. You can’t tell with the driveshafts because transmission fluid would be pumping through the transmission. Be careful safe travels welcome to the channel. And we appreciate having you here sorry I couldn’t be more definitive.
