rob i cant express enough how much you have helped me. without going into my disability and depression or that you have allowed me the opportunity to, in some small way, give a little peace to the men and women that sacrificed so much for all of us with the PHP. you, luther, megan or jake always take the time to help with any question i have had, whether its about an order i have placed or advice on some difficult problem. if i were to disregard all of that, just the content of your videos is a no nonsense resource in woodworking with hand tools from the best in the world that i can always refer back to whenever i need to brush up on a technique. i appreciate you and your team. thank you for all that you do.

Rob, great evening from the So. Texas coast. I'm 62 and my hands and fingers don't have the grip they did a few years back. Thank you for the hockey tape idea that sure helps me enjoy the time I spend in my open air shop where the glue ups and mortises get beat out. Had to buy a two cherry (hope it holds up.) I Followed your new chisel preparation video and I could really tell the difference from out of the box & after I Followed your instructions. Keep 'um coming

Thanks a lot for this video as for all the others about sharpening. As a beginner woodworker I have mixed feelings about the Trend diamond stone. Mine has indeed wear out more in the middle than on the sides. The stone has a little bit more than 10 hours of actual use, a bit too little to wear out. For this reason I now use it mainly to "flatten" traditional stone as Rob showed many times.

I keep this video qued up on a browser tab so that anytime i need to sharpen my edges i can use it as a quick reference guide to refresh myself with your tips.. Great stuff, short and concise. As an aside, what brand is that spokeshave you are using?

Dear Rob, when I hold something of value in my mole grips {eg small plane blade}, I have a piece of leather that I fold over the metal and then clamp outside the leather. No scratches. When I have finished the work, I clamp the piece of leather between the jaws of the mole grips. That way you don’t lose your piece.

Spend real money on the stones - yes! And a Trend 300/1000 for flattening, as Rob recommended, save me a lot of cash.

I have made several Queen Ann period pieces of furniture with cabriole legs, I use a Clifton a concave spokeshave. What is your recommended method for sharpening this type of blade?

As Trinity said, Honerite mixed with water (rust inhibitor) and a few drops of liquid dish washing soap

Nice videos Rob. Great stuff. I did finally get a Trend and the Shapton I have a question. I friend gave me his grandfathers plane. Bailey no7 type 11. The iron is a Stanley Rule & level co. The cutting end and chip breaker is 2 3/8 however tapers towards the rear by enough to matter i.e. alignment with the frog etc etc. I’m assuming this isn’t normal? 2.377”down to 2.29”. No evidence the sides ever ground?

ROB! I just had a total revelation watching this video! How come you've never mentioned not exceeding the bedding angle or the blade will stop cutting before?! I mean, I've watched almost all of your videos over the past several years now and I've taken classes from you. I don't think I've ever heard you mention it. I have a WoodRiver No. 5 and No. 6 about a year ago they both developed the same problem. Around that time I decided to try some Lie- Nielsens and have loved the low angle jack that I know you hate and my new No. 4-1/2. The 4-1/2 is new so that's why it hasn't developed this problem and the low angle jack No. 62 would never have that problem because it's a bevel up plane. I thought the soles on my WoodRivers had warped or something... I just couldn't figure out why they would skid across a board and not take a shaving. It's because I was sharpening a little too high and exceeded or met 45 degrees. I just fixed them both in about 20 mins and that's the first time these planes have cut well in over a year. This is important to know for those of us who use your sharpening technique on a daily basis!

If/when you do another video like this, I'd love to see the best way to sharpen a concave spoke shave blade. I assume a convex is handled similarly to the scrub plane iron?

Great info thanks - Any chance you can add in the curved spokeshave blade? Found an old combo spokeshave with straight and curved blades and having a devil of a time sharpening the curved one . If you are talking about the outside curved blade sharpen it the same way I did the scrub plane blade. Need a rounded stone for the inside curve. I will do a video on that in the future.

Very informative video. If I dont have HoneRite to moisten the stone with, is there anything else I could use? Also, on the skew block plane, do you ever use the knicker?

Honerite is only a rust inhibitor. If you dont want to use it make sure your dry your diamond stone really well. Water and a few drops of liquid soap will do you fine.

If you can get your hand on the silica gel packets, I find they help removing the moisture that may not have missed (only very small amounts. I kept a packet inside my trend plate cover it came with until I bought the HoneRite. Now I leave it out on my sharpening stations I built similar to Rob’s. But you still have to wipe them down. Also Windex has been a pretty good lubricant that doesn’t rust the metal as quickly. Again make sure that you wipe down thoroughly.

Great tutorial. You mentioned having the luxury of the shapton lapping plate to flatten your stone, could you use the trend diamond stone instead? If so which side would you use, the 300 or 1000 grit? I see you have an IBC blade for your Lie-Nielsen skew plane is that something you are planning to stock?

Absolutely and I recommend using a Trend diamond stone (300 side) unless you want to throw a lot of money at a Shapton lapping plate for the 5% improvement you will get over a trend. Dont get me wrong, that 5% is nice is some cases,but its not worth the cost for most people.

great vid and very useful. i have an old router plane where the blade is out of square. any tips for getting it back square by hand please? is it a case of just being slow and careful? thanks

It most likely got out of square through sharping by not holding or moving it in a straight line on the stone - holding it skewed. Easy to correct since its such a small blade. Pay attention to how you hold it and move it back and forth in a straight line, starting will be a little tricky since its skewed holding it straight means it will be on the tip of the skew but you will quickly hone that away. check it often with a small square as you sharpen.

Crazy how quick your hair grew back! 😉 that’d be a nice selling point for your syrup What is the primary bevel angle on the 1/8” chisel. I always fold the edge when ever I use my LN 1/8”. Think I sharpened too shallow of an edge.

25 is safe for hard and soft woods. That said, it is a small bit of metal so you have to go easy on it. I chew mine up as well.

Do you have to re-establish the back bevel when you regrind the primary bevel of a blade?

Rob, Eventually the secondary and tertiary bevels will become wide enough that you’ll need to re-establish the primary bevel. Do you flat grind or hollow grind the primary bevels. I don’t recall you’ve ever really discussed this. Thanks....Eric

Thanks for this video. I've been looking for this for a while now. I took your class in 2019 when you came to Orlando and I knew nothing about sharpening. We learned to sharpen the square hand plane blade and chisel. Great class. Especially for a beginner in hand tools. Shortly after that class and after watching many of your videos I began purchasing other tools and needed to know how the sharpen them. Not wanting to ruin the blades I started looking for videos. I couldn't find any that covered what I needed. Thanks again Rob. Now I'm going in my shop to prepare all those blades so i can enjoy woodworking with these great tools.

Hi Rob, I've been wondering since I bought in to the sharpening system that you use (Trend Diamond plate with Shapton Glass stones with Hone Rite (Spelling?)) if you have in the plans to ever do a care and maintenance on these sharpening tools? I know that I do not want to let the 300 grit side get too clogged up but just wondering how you clean them during use and before storage to prolong their use. For some reason when I watch your videos it does not seem like you get too much ceramic residue on your diamond plate when flattening but my experience is very different. I'm wondering what type of cloth to use when cleaning the diamond stones so you don't get a bunch of fibers on it, do you just spray the heck out of the diamond plate with hone right to clean it and let it drip on the floor, do you use an eraser after the diamond plate is dry to clear out the diamonds? Think this may be interesting for other people but also, I just need to know for myself :) Thank you for all that you teach us!

Why do you set the corner of the skew rabbet blade just proud of the edge, but on the shoulder plane (different video), you make it dead flat by pushing against a flat surface?

Skew block has a fence so that is your reference point. Shoulder plane no fence, inside edge of the tool is your reference point.

Hi Rob, just the video I was waiting for. In the case of the router blade, as its held of the work like a plane blade can the ruler trick not be used on the flat side? Also I own a 1000 grit Waterstone as well as a DMT lapping plate to flatten my stones. I got all my stones and lapping plate from L/N and they told me I could only use the DMT to flatten my stones and shouldn't use it to sharpen tools, someone else told me I could. Do you know if I can? Otherwise I will need to buy the trend plate you were using.. Cheers Dan

@@danthechippie4439 you can, but you will wear away the diamond particles on the DMT, over time, ,the effectiveness and flatness of your DMT will be compromised. Your lowest grit stone should be at least 1000x. I would only use something lower than this for reshaping / regrinding the primary bevel of the blade, never start your honing/sharpening process on a stone less than 1000x. If you need a lower grit for regrinding/reshaping primary, a trend/atoma diamond plate can be used, you can also use a low grit water stone. I use a shapton Kuromaku 120x (care must be taken to ensure it remains flat).

I'm glad you mentioned that the shoulder plane may not be square to itself. I have grown to hate mine because I couldn't get the blade to be parallel to the sole even though the blade edge checks out square. I though I was nuts because how could the blade be square and not project parallel to the plane sole? It never occurred to me that it might actually be the plane and not that the blade isn't square. So now I'll check that and hopefully that is the problem because if it's not then it's me. I'm sure it's not the square because that was the first thing I checked and I used more than one just to be sure.

Ive had a terrible time with getting router plane cutters sharp. This is great help. By the way... Love your dovetail saw! Recieved it a few weeka ago from woodcraft. (Wasnt sure with the virus thing how long shipping from Canada would be).

@@RobCosmanWoodworking hopefully you can see these... Please keep in mind this is only my first ever dovetails and I am still very much a begginer. They deffinently need work. One is done in oak and the other in very soft cedar. Ive got some gaps but thats mostly my poor chisel work lol.

I have a wooden shoulder plane. The blade is about a millimeter wider than the body. Should I match the body or simply adjust depending which side I wanna use?

Thank you Rob! I was waiting for this video to become available. I just received a Woodriver medium shoulder plane and was wondering how to sharpen the blade. Any tips of prepping it out of the box? Also almost forgot!!! I received my PHP wood is good blue shirt and the maple Syrup sample. Love the shirt but wasn’t able to try the Syrup. My wife finished it and said it was by far the BEST she’s ever tried. I have another order (hopefully shipped already)😉. I included a jar of the Maple Syrup for her. Hopefully she’ll let me try some! How can I correct a scewed chissel/plane blade with sharpening stones? It is just getting worse every time I sharpen😂😣

Do you mean a skewed blade? You have to re-establish the primary bevel and ensure its square to the side of the blade. The easiest method (and what I recommend) is to buy a cheap, used, 8 inch grinder then put on a good tool rest and a very coarse wheel on it. A CBN wheel works best. Then regrind the primary bevel, and test it with a square. If you can ONLY use stones then, then you need to get an inexpensive jig, set it for 25 degrees, and hone on the primary bevel on a coarse stone, such as the 300 grit side of a Trend Diamond stone, but this will take you ages. Go with the grinder method.

Is there a video explaining how to establish the primary bevel on the router blade? Part of what I'm asking is that it is easy to end up with the edge slightly out of parallel with the sole of the router plane when making the primary bevel. (Maybe it's more an issue with the back / bottom...not sure.) I'd like to learn how to fix that. My router blade is a hair out in this regard and I never get it quite right.
