Sharpening Carving Tools with the Flexcut SlipStrop

For maintaining inside and outside of gouges and vee tools, the Flexcut SlipStrop consists of a complex moulding with two areas of leather and a bar of a specially developed honing compound (abrasive). In use, the particular part of the moulding most suited to the chosen tool is rubbed crayon-like with compound and the tool stropped. A mirror finish is achieved quickly, and the resulting razor edge can be maintained by repeating the process many times before resharpening is required. Use for gouges and vee tools both inside and outside.

Warm up the Slipstrop a little and the compound will load easier. About the same temp as your cup of coffee.....NO, don't dunk it! LOL

The biggest issue I had was what was the abrasive size of the compound since it never gets mentioned. I strop with a 1 and .5 micron diamond paste on my planes and chisels. So I sent Flexcut an email and their customer service guy called me on Friday Morning. He said the abrasive particle size in the Gold Compound is .6 microns and the entire bar is non-toxic. I may try using it on my planes and chisels since the Gold Compound is way less expensive than what I've been using.

Say Heah, Infact I just put together a nice carving set. I got a Spyderco Puukku for Xmas, Santa had to make another stop. He than brought me the Flexcut Carving Jack. It was a no brainer to combine the two together. I now have a nice carving kit for my trips into the Bush, easy carry too. Dilly Dilly.,,.p

I just got the flexcut beginners set and the gouges or V tool won't fit or work in it. Why don't they make it universal for all the tools instead of finding out that only the straight edge knives will work on it?

I have some Pfeil tools and assume it’s the same principal 🤷‍♂️ I did see a someone use a stone first the finish off with slipstrop. What is the advantage or disadvantages of using a stone?

Good afternoon Simon, thank you for your question. The slipstrop is more of a buffer that will maintain sharp tools and just do the final touches of a proper sharpen. You could use a high grade (4000) slipstone for the same purposes as the slipstrop, however the slipstrop is easier to use. In short, you'd probably need to start with a stone if your cutting tool is really blunt, but if it just needs a little sharpen you can just go in with a high grade slipstone or the slipstrop. Little and often buffering is better practice than a big sharpening operation, less frequently. We hope this helps, all the best, the Jackson's team.

How much pressure do you have? Your not going to break the tool in your hand. If the tool handle breaks, send it back to the manufacturer. North American tool manufacturers should never, ever break between the handle and the bit. Ever!

rahm emmanuel According to Flexcut the particle size is .6 micron and slightly larger. Looking at the Grand Unified Grit Chart that looks like it would be somewhere under 18000 grit. 😮

Warning the Flexcut SlipStrop now only comes with a 1 inch strip of leather on the back now it is not covered like your's is and is so small it's useless! You should check it out before you recommend this to your viewers.
