Do you have a flattening block for your wet stones? I purchased one about three weeks ago but haven’t used it yet but know my stones will have to be flattened before I can sharpen again. I have the same honing guide except doesn’t have the writing on the side. Have you tried sharpening a 1/4” chisel in it yet? I can’t get it to tighten up enough for my 1/4”. Just curious if I’m doing something wrong or if it just will not work with a 1/4”. I love the honing jig other than that one issue. Sharpens my plane blades great as well. Thanks

I was watching a video by the Third Coast Craftsman and he mentioned that he flattens his stones by rubbing the two together. I've just been doing that. Yes, I've used the honing guide with a 1/4" chisel - didn't have any issues!

Since this video is for beginners I think a comment is in order about terminology , which can be confusing. A “whetstone” is not necessarily a water stone. The term “whetstone” just means sharpening stone, and it could be an oil stone or a water stone, or a diamond stone. You would never put an oil stone in water, and you would never put oil on a water stone.

How do you know the difference? Without the packaging from the wedstone
@robertthompson5908
@robertthompson5908 Жыл бұрын
@@robbieblieck8792 Good question! Without the packaging I’m not really sure. They can look similar. Oil stones tend to be black or dark grey, but not always. Water stones tend to be tan or light brown or other colors, but not always.

Thanks for the clarification. I have an oil stone but I think I’ve broken it because it’s not sharpening anything anymore, I’ve only used it for 2 days or so. Stanley brand.

The amount of times I've had to explain to people who complain their newly bought chisels and plane blades are blunt that they are required to be sharpened before using them - yes even brand new good quality ones. But instead they start leaving negative reviews on the shop's website which is quite unfair to be fair. I spend at least 30 mins sharpening on 4000 & 8000 grit before even starting to work on my projects. Good sharp tools are the way to avoid mishaps at the bench.

Thanks and have a great day

Awesome, thank you for watching! I definitely need to get a leather strop soon, I'm missing out. For my camera gear, I should have most of it listed out in the video description - but I used a mirrorless camera from Canon. It wasn't crazy expensive and after you learn the settings, you can get really good video quality. Also, you can definitely use your phone and a tripod too. Just make sure you get an external microphone (because sound makes a huge difference in videos, especially when speaking).

Oops. Guide said 30mm for 30 deg bevel and 40mm for 25 deg bevel. Your chisel has a 25 deg bevel but you set chisel and guide for 30mm instead of the 40mm you need to maintain current chisel bevel.

WOW! You shave your beard with your chisels! Okay, you should probably have a 'not to be tried at home' disclaimer. Quick question; you said your chisel is set to a 25-degree bevel, but you set your caliper at 30? Why is that? Thanks for sharing.

I'm not so sure I trust the grit numbers on those stones. 8000 grit is redonkulous! I don't think polishing compound is more than like 2-3000 grit.
