Good information. You asked for comments. Some minor things: I guess I would have mentioned that you don't need to stop at 1,000 grit, but could continue with 1,500 and 2,000 grit. I do my strops skin (smooth) side out. Generally you want a hard, flat surface on the hones to prevent any rounding as the material compresses.

I was trying to scoop out the insides of a potato to make stuffed potatoes for dinner and I kept thinking it would be nice to have a curved blade like a sharpened spoon. So I googled it and found this video. It would make a handy cook's tool in the kitchen. Although I doubt that I could sharpen it as you did so skillfully. Thanks.

I got a cheap shit spoon and sunk it into a piece of narrow pvc pipe with plenty of hot glue from my glue gun. Then I gave it to a mechanic friend to put an edge around it. I use it for de-pipping butternut squash - the pips are so slimy and sticky. Works like a charm.

Very modest not to say that Nic makes one particular knife with the profile designed by you [and named after you] I got given one and it's excellent, as is the spoon you made me. Gets used more than any other.

Another fantastic video, Your such a natural communicator of process. Keep up the great work. One point, do you not worry about getting grit from your wet and dry on to the leather dowel if you wrap the wet and dry on top of the leather?

In other videos we are told to only sharpen the inside edge, never the outside since that greatly affects smooth carving. Why the disagreement or i should say lack of uniform agreement about sharpening?

Thank you mate! How did you attach the leather and sand paper to the wood?
@Rebelbodger
@Rebelbodger 7 жыл бұрын
Had to try a few out as both the sand paper & leather had a dressing on them - they weren't anything special - just what I had kicking around in the workshop drawers/cupboards & I just experimented till they stuck! I'm very low tech on these things...

what glue is used to hold the paper to the stick and still make changing the paper possible later on ?
@karlnewman2829
@karlnewman2829 6 жыл бұрын
if you use a contact adhesive on the wood only (spray on type ) you can re-use the stick. some folks may object to the aerosol. if you look at the dowels as being disposable you can use any glue. or you can scrape the paper off.

@@robinfawcett7973 haha the funny thing is i actually just fixed the problem today... you see i looked at some videos and saw that my hook knife was shaped vastly different than others, i have a mora hook knife but i changed the bevel from a weird micro bevel kinda thing (i don't know if that is a european thing) to a full convex grind and i then shortened the tip and polished up the blade again and now its razor sharp so i can finally get on with my spoon :)
