I like your whole approach and the light revealing the little line of the burr so clearly then its being done away with in the video where you showing your son was a real aha moment for me. I am fascinated by the sewing machine motor adaptations, both Consew and Enduro. Which makes an easier refit to either Viel or HF? Which do you like better? You say the Enduro was not practical, but unless it was a bear to do I wonder why? Seems ingenious. Rix from Houston

The problem that your not able to make videos for us, due to you being busy (and making money I hope) is a good problem to have. I need to stop being lazy and go back thru your videos on doing a motor swap or just making a custom 1x30 and setting up my shop.

Recently got a couple HF 1x30 belt sanders . 800 grit on 1 & a leather belt on the other ( what is the finest grit you recommend ? ) . I bought a variable speed control for them , but they don't do very well imo . I have a dozen or so fixed angle hand sharpeners and recommend anybody wanting to go to the next level to get a couple 1x30 belt sanders .

Speed controllers wont work on a single phase AC motor, only universal type motors with brushes. I have one machine dedicated to damage removal and setting the angle. lower grit like 120. If you want a toothy edge stay below 600 grit.

Big investment of time and money, but you are "ready to roll" literally. Do you use a generator or an inverter ? Anyway, great set up, there's not much you can't handle by the looks of it, to me

!!! You must have 200 hours into that van, and it looks fantastic. Moving on to the Viel, which you didn't spend enough air time on, where did that base come from? It looks like you cut off the motor base that is part of the stock Viel...? I might have to build that. I imagine that the Consew motor maintains full power across a wider rpm range...? Can the angle gauge fit on it? What do you think of it? I wonder if the Consew would work on the HF frame. That might be a world beater. Would the Consew motor fit on the HF???? I think that's what I want to build, but would the Consew fit?

Hi , what is your take on the point between a " toothy edge " vs a more polished edge performs better ? I mostly only sharpen for myself and am trying to get my knife to where it " tree tops " . I've been able to get part of the blade to tree top a few hairs. Thanks for any advice or advice from other readers 👍
@CurryCustomCutlery
@CurryCustomCutlery 4 жыл бұрын
Tree topping is at the finest end of polished edge sharpening. Ive been able to split a hair from the belt sander but not pop it. Close tho. Toothy edge is much harder to get consistent on belts but just works so much better for slicing a tomato.

What is that wheel on the back side of the viel machine? Silver adjuster wheel of some sort?? The veil angle guidebis way better than the Surgi Sharp thing. But the tracking knob on the HF is easier than the Viel tracking. Do you prefer little red or the viel machine?
@CurryCustomCutlery
@CurryCustomCutlery 5 жыл бұрын
Still too early to tell...and Im very biased by nature after 1000hrs on lil red. I prefer lil red for now is the short answer but the Viel works mostly just fine. Spins the belt, removes the metal.

What grit do you recommend for fillet knives slicing through fish skin? I purchased a stone from a company in the netherlands that trains filleters. It was 120/320, so I would think 400 should be about max for fillet knives, do you agree? Then the hard part is removing the 400 grit burr from a machine sharpened knife. Any tips?
@CurryCustomCutlery
@CurryCustomCutlery 3 жыл бұрын
There is a big difference in the actual micro-teeth serration left behind from a stone compared to belt and also a big difference between edge leading or trailing. Try finishing edge leading to remove any loose burr at a slightly higher angle, almost micro burr it and inspect with a loupe or scope. Should get you there.

@@CurryCustomCutlery Thanks Cliff, although I have a Kalamazoo 1sm used edge trailing! I have no angle jig. There is a new jig on the market for nearly $200 but.....In the past I have been thinking of a Veil grinder with the angle guide but some would say why when I have the Kali.

I love the angle guide for the 1x30 but how do you get the angle for the 2x42?
@CurryCustomCutlery
@CurryCustomCutlery 4 жыл бұрын
Angle for the larger 2x36 is held free hand for a couple reasons. Mostly due to the need for variation in the angle. Convexing in the slack also.

@@CurryCustomCutlery Thanks for the info. Unfortunately my 2x42 just exploded. It was running great until I laid it down so that I go edge trailing. After a minute I hear a small explosion and there's smoke coming out of the bottom. I unscrew it and I see some oil leaking and a protective cap covering some wires came off. When I turn it on I hear a sound of a motor I think? But it doesn't sound like how it's supposed to and the wheel isn't turning. Any idea what may be the issue and how I could resolve it? Thanks.
