Quilt As You Go can require huge amounts of precision sewing and the results are often less than you hoped. This method gives quick and easy results and you can get as creative as you wish with it!
Watch as Sharyn shows the value of adjusting needle drop position and stitches fabric tape over the back and front of the joins.

I'm so very happy that I came across your channel. I am making quilts for my bed and now for my granddaughters and grandson, who will be born in December. I am very new to quilting, my mom didn't have a chance to teach me because her hands were getting bad and my dad made her stop. My mom always did QAYG and she told me that if I ever started quilting that I should do the same thing. The one thing that she forgot to tell me was how to join the pieces after sewing the top, middle and bottom together. I now know how my mom joined her pieces together, thank you for sharing this video of how you and my mom joined her quilts.

It is lovely that you will be able to remember her whilst you make quilts for your family. There are a number of different ways to do Quilt as You Go, I find this one the least complicated. Enjoy your quilting! Cheers Sharyn

So glad I have found you! I am starting quilt as you go, as I no longer can manage a big quilt in my machine. This joining method is brilliant. Thank you so much. Oh, and I finally know ow to use a needle threader after all these years!

You are not the first on having needle threaders for years with knowing how to use them! They come with a number of different overlockers/servers.

I’ve been working on a few qayg quilts , they are easier for me to handle. Your way of doing qayg is ingenious!! I’m just getting ready to bind a quilt and start a another using your method. Thank you so very much for sharing your knowledge and beautiful work. So glad I found your channel 😊☺️

Hi Sharyn. Greetings from Canada. Have you ever used the invisible thread? Great video, very clear ; being able to see so close is extremely helpful.

I tried it many years ago, and eventually it cut through the bobbin thread and things came apart. I have not used it since, as I don't want to sew things again! 😊

Can you use wider strips like a 2 1/2 inch or wider or do you have to use 1 inch between your blocks
@SharynsSewingSchool
@SharynsSewingSchool 3 ай бұрын
On this one I was using half inch tape. I have used one inch, but when I go wider than that, it is harder to get the fabric tape to sit flat. Hope that helps!

Love your method, thanks. Do you add a strip on the back, then on front? Or do the entire back, then the front?
@SharynsSewingSchool
@SharynsSewingSchool 10 ай бұрын
Back then front on one strip, then add an extra row and do the same again. That way, for most of the stitching, I am only one row from the edge. I only have to roll up a lot of quilt into the harp space of the machine when I am doing the vertical covering. Cheers Sharyn

Can you use a slightly larger tape for the front of the quilt ??? I realize it would show more on the back but I think it would make the front look better.
@SharynsSewingSchool
@SharynsSewingSchool 6 ай бұрын
You can do anything you like! Depending on the kind of blocks you are making, different things will make more sense. Braid or lace would be great on a more heirloom style of quilt. Maybe tartan ribbon on something else. If you make the second side much bigger, the stitching will show on the squares at the back.

Love your demonstration. I have done this method in the past for a kitty quilt. I forgot how I did it so this helps so much. What kind and size of needle do you suggest?
@SharynsSewingSchool
@SharynsSewingSchool 10 ай бұрын
I just use a size 14 universal. I want something a bit heavier as it is going through multiple layers. 😉

Does the quilt feel stiff on the joining areas when done as quilt as you go?
@SharynsSewingSchool
@SharynsSewingSchool 11 ай бұрын
Not that I have noticed. It is unlikely to be more stiff than other QAYG methods which sometimes have even more fabric attached. Some finishings will be softer than others.
