I actually think Shawn and her husband worded it very respectfully and it didn't come across like 'oh yay, it's not disabled babay, because if it had been, we would have aborted it'. I don't think they are to blame for this. They only did the test after the doctor advised them to, and I think it's their decision, if they want to know for sure, and I think it's alright to want to be prepared for what will happen. A baby with down syndrome often does have health issues at the beginning of their lives (heart problems mostly) so I understand the need to know for sure, especially when you are not familiar with chromosomal variations or other differences from the 'normal' outcome 'after' birth. Yes I have worked with children with down syndrome and I also think that there definitely should be more education about the subject of them being just as human as us and that there is no need to be more scared for a baby with down syndrome than one without, because: yes, MAYBE they'll need more help learning new stuff or MAYBE take a little longer to learn to walk or speak. But those baby's are definitely not 'suffering' from anything other than their often related health issue (heart). They are able to live as much of a happy and independent life as we are (though some maybe in a different way than what is seen as 'normal'). That said: it would have been the today shows job to educate people that there is nothing wrong with having a baby with down syndrome, not celebrating for a couple that they 'gladly' won't have a baby with DS.

Although I do understand the struggles this couple have been through I do find the way Today worded this a bit offensive and I believe that many will find it VERY offensive. Just because a child has DS does not mean they are "unhealthy". Also, though it is likely that the genetic testing is conclusive it is not certain. I know many that had genetic testing and it turned out inaccurate. Maybe they should do a little research on DS. This is exactly why parents who have a prenatal diagnosis of DS are told that people feel sorry for them. That is devastating. I'm by far not a cream puff who believes everyone and everything must be PC but this is not quite well vetted .

Today made it seem like their video talked about DS. The baby code has an issue. Which is why they are scared. Poor editing on Today's part... It just looks bad.

There needs to be more space to shed light and love to those with down syndrome or any other child who may not fit in the category of "healthy baby"... Too often families and children with special needs are marginalized and sympathized... and in reality they need to be CELEBRATED. While I'm sure not harm was meant to be done by this segment- the Today Show really missed the mark and the opportunity to advocate and include all families.

I felt that too!!! Maybe he's not a better driver? My ex learned to drive in his 20's and he drives SOOOO slow!!! When we first moved to our new house, he would ALWAYS turn on the wrong road hahaha!!! I would be following him in the car!!! He ALWAYS turned early hahahah!! As long as she's happy, I would prefer that my husband drive me!! Maybe it's a control issue?!! They don't allow comments on their youtube videos so that's a DEFINITE control issue. I bet they get less views because of that. I'm not subscribed. If someone can't take a bit of constructive criticism or PRAISE, they're too thinned skinned for me!! Today Show Team: I write regarding the show “Shawn Johnson gives uplifting update after pregnancy complications” on July 22, 2019. One hopes the thought behind this piece was to showcase a journey of a set of parents-to-be, a celebrity couple who are favorites to many, to extend a sense of support even to those with difficult journeys. This was badly executed and ended up being highly disrespectful to people with Down Syndrome and to families that have welcomed babies with Down Syndrome. Good for them that the happy couple received a negative result. But they and the show have no right to wrongfully cast a positive diagnosis in such a bad light using words like “so scary” that they finally can “breathe for the first time in weeks”. Receiving a test result is a highly personal experience that can be exhilarating or gut wrenching for any parent. This should not be shared on national TV in such a way that people who were not in the same page, people who happened to receive the opposite results, are left with a projected sense of “so sad to be you”. Did he producers not sit to think a minute what message they were sending to families with people with Down Syndrome? Was that message supposed to be “too bad but you’ll are not the viewership we’re going after” or “ we don’t have the sensitivity or the thoughtfulness to set our ignorance aside and look into the lives of some who did happen to get a positive diagnosis”? Because that’s what came through. Loud and clear. This was such a good opportunity to convey some real support and strength to ALL your viewers and you have failed hard and not just missed the mark but displayed ignorance and tasteless, while grossly insulting a significant population of your viewers who are struggling against discrimination on several fronts. Hope someone has the sense to right this wrong in a meaningful way. Sincerely, A parent with a lovely child who happens to have an extra 21st chromosome

There is no wrong that needs to be made right here. The Easts very clearly stated that they were prepared to love and care for their child no matter what. Are you saying that a network shouldn’t air a story about someone whose relatives were unexpectedly found alive after an earthquake because it might offend people whose relatives had died in the same disaster. Celebrating misfortune averted by one couple does not disrespect those others who have experienced it. Being offended by a beautiful story smacks of looking for trouble. I salute the Easts for sharing their joy and I salute NBC for broadcasting it.

Actually if you watched both videos by them you would realize Down syndrome was one of many complication possibilities that was presented to this couple. There were several very scary issues, this clip focused on one thing that they said didn’t matter to them as they would love the baby no matter what . The other complications scared the crap out of them as it could mean the baby may not survive . Try watching the video before making this big long comment . Also, Even if someone prayed to have a healthy baby when presented with the possibility of the child having DS is not horrible, they said they would love them no matter what but every parent dreams of a healthy baby. Now if you are angry that every parent wishes for a healthy baby when presented with 3 very scary complications then you are seriously need to re-evaluate your perspective on life.

Why shine a light on a celebration of not having a child with DS. You’re agreeing with this idea that a child with DS is lesser. It’s honestly disrespectful and hurtful to the entire disability community, which already suffers from so much from society and how it views them. Love your babies no matter what! They will be beautiful and amazing and smart and capable. Health doesn’t equal worth. So both you and the East family should feel ashamed about the hurtful impact your videos had.

Ana Julia Daza Walter so here is the Deal!! You are completely misinformed about what happened. They Never asked for genetic testing...due to several complications they said no we don’t care!! We love our baby. They already lost one baby. Personally I am completely frustrated with such hate, anger and misinformation. Perhaps you should watch the two videos they posted before making such uninformed comments.

Maybe before you make this entirely stupid comment watch their real videos, Down syndrome was one of many complications they were facing and they said Down syndrome didn’t matter to them the other complications did . The other ones has to do with umbilical cord issues and under developed kidneys . Your comment is completely out of context and you should be ashamed to blame the East family. Also every parent when faced with multiple complications prays that their child is healthy and they said very clearl they would love the child no matter what. ALSO if you had done your research you would have known that Shawn’s mom had complications with her and they told her that Shawn would never walk so clearly they wanted to shine a light and be open about their scary complications the least of which was Down syndrome (which apparently you didn’t bother to listen to) and be open with people. Also , Shawn already has a miscarriage and was open about that painful process and people like you jumped down her throat about sharing that.

Ana Julia Daza Walter These comments are correct. The story on NBC does not actually reflect what happened and what this couple went thru. Watch their videos completely to get the whole context. Our “special needs” daughter is 23 years old and will start grad school next month to get her doctor of audiology degree. I am pretty sensitive to this issue, but this couple did and said nothing wrong. Watch their entire videos.

Ana Julia Daza Walter whats shameful is shaming someone for being happy their baby is healthy. DS was never a concern for them, when presented with the option for genetic testing they both decided no, they would love their baby no matter what. It wasn’t until other complications presented themselves and combined could result in DS or worse, the loss of life for their baby through still birth or not making to term which was when genetic testing became important. They are happy their baby is healthy and has a chance at life. What is so wrong with that? What i see as hurtful and wrong is shaming someone and being offended that someone is happy their baby is healthy.

They TRIED to talk about it in a respectful way. Telling you as a special needs mom, they FAILED. I don't blame them though. They haven't HD the baby yet. If they do and watch these images again, they will know what I'm talking about. For example, the "healthy baby" they talk about. I have two very HEALTHY autistic boys. Also, the praying and wanting for a certain child is never met. A child is his or her own soul. As they should be.

Sanne Dreef They failed according to YOU. Your attitude may be common among those in a situation similar to your own, but your comments are certainly not mainstream. Rather than parse the exact word choice to be as oversensitive as possible and find fault where none exists, focus on the fact that these wonderful people are thankful that a human being is healthy. It is not wrong to be grateful for health, nor does it reflect that people born without DS are superior to those born with DS.

I don't understand women who have a history of miscarriage who GET PREGNANT again yet they still do high risk things. Watching her trying to do gymnastics and jumping on a trampoline is not smart!!! Same thing for Nancy Kerrigan!! She had like 10 miscarriages yet when she got pregnant she was still jumping!! One wrong landing or a fall and you can really put the health of your baby and yourself in danger!

If it's not seen as a bad thing, why have an entire segment celebrating the negative results? Whether they meant anything negative or not, this whole segment screams "YAY NO DOWN SYNDROME! OUR BABY WILL BE HEALTHY!" It's gross and quite frankly you should be ashamed. All of you.

Distasteful... No thank you Shawn Johnson and the Today Show. We don’t want your small minded, off-hand commentary on so many of our lives touched by so many different bumps on the way -bumps including a Down Syndrome diagnosis. We are quite happy, contended, and find fulfillment in our lives - no matter our chromosomal makeup. Our rich multidimensional lives which you special people find (/gasp/) “so scary”. So thank you very much. Shame on NBC for making a buck off this while sidelining a sizeable set of people who happened to fall on the other side of getting results from genetic testing. Yet another example of shameful, lazy, and insensitive reporting by a show on national television.

If you watched their video, they explain they would love any baby. That you can't control what happens when growing a baby and that can be scary. It's the fear of the unknown. They never said that they would not love or finish this pregnancy due to the results. The results would only help them better prepare for a child with a different set of needs. Needs that can wildly very. They are still worried becAuse there are complications with the babies cord. This could cause other issues with this baby. But they still continue to love this baby. They just want him/her to be healthy. Nothing wrong with that.
