Yes. Thank you for voicing this. It is so hard to get people understand the very real sense of grief and loss that follows a major success! You definitely grieve a part of your identity and you have to recreate who you want to become best and choose your next dream and goal, and there’s a definite phase of disorientation in between.

So many gymnasts go through this. It's not like coaches don't know this is happening. Why aren't they working with the gymnast and the caregivers to help these amazing ppl transition into life post gymnastics. There should be a ceremony to acknowledge the end of this phase and the celebration of a new one. This is emotional abuse. I've been through this. It's a form of abandonment.

I’m not an athlete but I remember this feeling when I left home for the first time after years of being in my house (I was homeschooled, and very isolate from the ages of 14-19) and again when I got my drivers license. The realization at 19 years old that I could wake up and drive to a thrift store whenever I wanted, that I could buy chocolate cake whenever I wanted and do it all alone with no one to wait for or get approval from now that I was living in another state with my own money and car was an astounding feeling. I’m sure she had so much more pressure on her and being an Olympian is something so much bigger than what I experienced, but I can at least relate to the feeling of being completely unsure how to function in a world that felt brand new to me but everyone else had been living in for so long.

I've often wondered about this -- with Olympians, but also professional athletes of all sorts and military veterans. Their lives have been focused and guided so rigidly, and then suddenly they're done. Spit out to make their own way, with no preparation for a normal life. It's horrifying.

This is why so many of them fall into depression for a time. My oldest just got out of the Marines last year and was confused about what to do. He went straight after high school and always lived with a structure of some kind, and suddenly had none (he wanted to be career Marine but had a degenerative back condition so they wouldn't allow him to re-up). He went through a small bout of depression but eventually got through it.

This WAS her life. Elite level training is strenuous, and affects every portion of an athletes' day, from the amount of sleep they get,to the foods they eat, to the physicality of training. There IS no room for anything else, which is understandable, because other interests can have a negative impact on training. Like hiking? Hike and break and ankle. Play piano? Also time consuming,so pick which you want to give time to. "having other interests" sounds great, but is not really feasible.
