Yeah that’s what I just thought. Only Art Tatum or Charlie Parker maybe Coltrane and Eric Dolphy had this combination of speed, endurance and incredible sense of melody, phrasing and timing. Shawn played beautiful lines, he definitely is not just noodling he’s playing very sophisticated shit, like outer space 🪐 Alien shit. Part of me thinks Jimi Hendrix Machine Gun at the Fillmore, Norman OK and Isle of Wight is the pinnacle of guitar playing....but then I listen to Shawn Lane and think this must be the pinnacle. Jason Becker did some insane shit like super shredding with one hand while using a Yo-Yo in the other and wrote and played Serrana Arpeggios at like 16 and played Paganini’s Caprice at 15 full speed but Shawn is even better than that! I’ve an obsessive listener and player and went to a music conservatory, I’ve seen Steve Vai, Satriani, John McLaughlin, Derek Trucks and tons of amazing jazz musicians Live and a ton of amazing classical players who can play 4 parts at once full speed...BUT....Shawn Lane still seems light years ahead of everyone i ( imho ) ahead of everyone. His facility doesn’t seem real. I’m starting to think this guy was some form of an alien. Anyone can practice and get really fast, but this is something completely unique and different I’ve never never anything remotely close to. I think he even smokes Art Tatum which people would of said was impossible to do. Anyone else mind boggled by this playing??? I can’t figure out how he was able to get this to level besides being touched by God or a deal with the Devil lol but I really mean that. It doesn’t even make sense how good he is. The video says him and Holdsworth but I don’t Holdsworth could ever keep up with Shawn. He’s like Holdsworth 1.5x faster which is saying an awful lot. It’s scary how good this guy is....

@@jordandangelo180 Love both, prefer Shawn, but no Holdsworth, no Shawn. And in fairness Holdswoth was doingi this stuff when peiple were peeing in their pants over players like Ritchie Balckmore. Yeah it's a good point. He was not only playing blindingly fast, but it all made sense in context too! But, he could actually play coherent, heartfelt music at that "unplayable" speed!
@maaaaaap

@BurnRoddy
@BurnRoddy 5 жыл бұрын
Not speed. Timing. Virtuoso guitarists usually go to fraction of seconds in regards to what they want their notes to last. Shawn made his notes last EXACTLY the amount of time he wanted better than anyone else. That's why I think while there have been a few guitarists that may be considered the bestonly Shanw was perfect. Because HE WAS PERFECT.
@jordandangelo180
@jordandangelo180 3 жыл бұрын
@@BurnRoddy you’re right his timing and note length was dead on perfect. That’s why everything flows so well. I don’t understand why he isn’t celebrated as the greatest guitarist ever or at least one of the top 3-5 if you want to say he didn’t write hits or wasn’t in a popular band like the Stones or something but regardless, he could of never written a song and should still be celebrated. He wrote beautiful melodies and his lines and phrasing is immaculate. But for what he accomplished as a musician I don’t believe has even been done before. I know they say Paganini made women faint and cry and they thought he sold his soul to the devil but that was a long time ago and Shawn should have a major film company or group release a documentary on what the level of plaguing he was able to accomplish. It’s completely unparalleled. I know it’s over most people’s heads but it would do the public a lot of good to get acquainted with a genius of this magnitude.

Lead guitarist for Black Oak Arkansas at 14...embarrassed the hell out of Ted Nugent at 16 in a guitar off because Ted was arrogant enough to try to do it to him. I feel that you have to be an accomplished guitarist who really knows music to be able to have a valid opinion about who's the best really. I've been playing a guitar for 45 years I want someone to show me who's better than this guy.

Im 61 years old . Since hearing Black Dog by Led Zeppelin on the radio at 14 years of age , there hasn't been a single day in my life without Rock n Roll played in some shape or form. Love the classic rock music, but have evolved through the decades with new bands , new music, new musicians. How the hell did this man and his gift elude me until August 20th , 2022 ? What makes it even crazier is guitarists that consider Shawn the best of all time ( Guthrie Govan and Paul Gilbert to name a couple. ) are guitarists I listen to all the time. I would say there are less than a handful guitarists who can touch all your emotions without a single vocal. Shawn not only does....he does it while shredding. The sad part is I found this man's genius the same day I found he's no longer with us. The great part is I have the rest of my life to get more acquainted .

Amazing technical skill and feel, but i can't think of a single song or melody that comes to mind in the same way it does with Hendrix or Van Halen. Shawn was very much a product of that era but like the grainy vids of him playing they will fade away over time and i suspect he'll be forgotten and if he is remembered it'll be a footnote, a curiosity of this time in music.
