This is my first delivery to the cabin. Follow me into "town" to tour the Swift Canoe factory and to see how my new canoe was built. This canoe is a replacement for two canoes that I sold or traded away.

It's wonderful to see a small business pride themselves in design and production. You can see their love for detail and quality. Each canoe would be individually unique, a reflection of who made it, unlike anything mass produced. These folks are artisans. No doubt about it. Thanks for sharing Shawn. God bless all those that have stepped "out of the mold", believed in themselves and strived for perfection.

Nice to see a family run business that excels in their craft, and has a worldwide reputation for quality. That road you live on is what we call "Rustic" here in Wisconsin - I grew up on a road like that, and my folks retired to a place in northern Wisconsin near Phillips, that was on a Rustic Road, and then to New Mexico with the same type of road, (that road went through a state forest before they got to the private land that they and others resided on.) Some of the residents made sure that the road was plowed out to the highway, about 4 miles, anytime it snowed over 4 inches. As always, stay safe. Hi, Cali (from Gaspar, an admirer)

This video made me miss paddling! Joined a paddling club on the west side of the island a few years back. We practiced 3 days a week to prepare for races throughout the entire season, and for the Regattas. So much fun! I was in the best shape of my life. Paddling works every part of your body. Although this type of canoeing is different from Outrigger canoe racing, it's a wonderful sport! This was a cool video Shawn, thank you!

Nice canoe, thumbs up ! I've had canoes for 40 plus years, wood, fiberglass, plastic and aluminum. I have 2, 17' Grumman Aluminum now. One is a double ender, the other is a flat back for a motor. I modified the Flat Back quite heavily by removing the front seat and putting a very low beach chair and 12'' back from the original and a storage shelf in front of it, a beer holder of course. The rear seat is a lightweight boat seat with a fold up back for comfort and mounted very low. Behind the rear seat, is a storage section with a lid that folds up. I beefed up the transom to withstand twice the HP from 5 to 10HP. Every mod was made from aluminum and stainless rivets. She's a little heavy, around 87lbs but with 2 people and a 10hp, she'll do around 12mph and being the thicker aluminum, I can smash into things and never worry, I hope. lol !

Second best thing to seeing a canoe on a lake is seeing a canoe on a rack headed to a lake. I used to paddle a two person sitting backwards in the bow with kayak paddle and canoe paddle for backup. It paddled and turned like a barge but super stable and easy to portage. I found some solos too tippy. My favorite was a canoe kayak hybrid for paddling but not for portaging. It rode the waves like a dream, fast and highly responsive. I look forward to seeing this one when the hard water melts. Would love to find a hybrid that is easy to portage.

Boys you know a My Self Reliance decal would look good on the side of that boat. I know this guy, well you might too, who has those for sale. We're going to have lots of water here in Northern Maine this spring also. We are on pace with a record setting winter snowfall that was set about ten years ago. Had some pretty significant flooding of a few towns further north on the St. John River that spring. Nice boat, Cali's blond hair is gonna look sweet against that dark color.

Hey Sean I love your videos, I believe I am almost up to date. I'm a bit of a bushcrafter. I was a chef over 20 years. Here is a little canning tip. Instead of plain boiling your meat in the pressure canner. Try filling the Dutch oven with a flavorful stew or soup. Then pressure can to Finnish the cooking process. Ready to eat out of the jar if need be.

Beautiful canoe ... my last canoe (over 20 years ago now) was a 17' Old Town Penobscot made of Royalex. I put kevlar skid plates on it immediately. The thing was practically indestructible Quite heavy (65 lbs), but was a work horse with two paddlers, or just me with a Minn Kota trolling motor with side mount. A good camping canoe at the time ..... very stable. Back then I had no problem lifting that canoe onto the roof rack of a 1986 Jeep Cherokee Chief. Today I'd be looking for a much lighter canoe for dropping into small lakes/ponds, or paddling on wide mostly lazy rivers. I have to admit, that looking around for today's canoes .... I have quite a bit of "sticker shock". Again .... that looks like a sweet canoe, and should give you years of enjoyment. Take care.

Woe! That brought back some memories... I and friend were doing a 4 day canoe trip around a lake near Edmonton (I was 14 yo)... A buddy and I had a cargo canoe with all of the food. We were crossing the lake when a Storm came in... The waves were hitting about 3' high and the wind was horrendous... We were traveling across the wind and the waves were hitting us from the port side. It took us about 2 hours longer to go the distance, but finally made it to the opposite side where our friends were freaking out... We got the Canoes out of the water and sheltered, when the storm hit... Hail came down the size of Golf balls, rain and 40 - 60 mph winds... When it passed we came out to assess the damages. The canoes were ok, but there were dead and/or injured birds everywhere... Sheesh! I don't know if your cellular service will extend that far, but now, I always carry a Marine Radio with me... 2-way radio, with a crank generator to keep it charged... I can receive weather reports from Environment Canada and radio anyone on emergency channels, with in 30 Km... Good thing to have... Thankfully, I've never had to use it... Oh! I'm going to share this video with a buddy who is an avid outdoors-man and hunter... He had a canoe, last summer but it was crap and the hull was cracked and leaked... Think he'd enjoy this video :-) Oh! My radio is a "Midland - Base Camp XT 511"

Something you might consider for the future is a back rest. For many years I never used a backrest, but once I came up with a good design, I never paddle without one. I am a traditionalist, but once I tried a light weight bent shaft paddle I never went back despite having made my own paddles. With a back rest and bent shaft paddle I can still paddle all day at age 70.

Shawn I've had many different canoes in my lifetime. Fibrglass, poloy, wood, Kevlar. My old woodsman 18' is a great tripper but too big for two unless I take a long trip. It handles well and manuevures well in response but when weighed down is sluggish against headwind. Thinking sail!
