regarding body mechanics of chopping firewood; an experienced old guy who had spent many years in the bush camp cutting pulp wood, shared his knowledge of selecting the proper length of axe for maximum control and leverage; the optimum axe length for the individual should be measured from the crotch to the ground. i have tried various lengths of axe handle and found this wisdom to be true.

I'm not even that well practiced in fire making and I still act like I know what I'm doing some times. Good advice to not be casual about building fires. You dont always have a roll of news paper or can of gas to bail you out from a lack of prep. Also good to show your family the safe way of chopping. You are gonna have to pass some chores off at times with all those different fires places. At least they will be doing it safely. Thanks for the upload. Keep up the great work.

Oh man, your firemaking talk is right on point haha. Almost every time I go out, I just get so dang excited and throw everything right in the fire off the bat... Inevitably it gets choked and goes out, I spend 10 minutes blowing on the thing and then break it all down and do it properly haha. After a long day on the canoe, I'm just itching to eat a nice hot meal and my patience just gets thrown right out the window lol. You're right, stuff like that takes time and it's worth it to practice doing it properly and skillfully. By the way, it's cool that you get your daughter up there to practice some outdoor skills. My family was never the outdoor type, so I was never shown how to do things properly... Heck, they barely got me out into the wilderness. I'm lucky to have a great friend that brought me into the Canadian backcountry and showed me some useful skills, priming me to the outdoor lifestyle. I have a whole lot more to learn, but I'm slowly learning and it's great! Especially with the internet at my disposal, it's great to have such a wealth of knowledge out there to learn from. Anyway, cheers man! I can't wait for the canoe season to open up... Gonna grab my Swift boat from the store in Gravenhurst and head up north ASAP!

Hey Stef.. agreed, the more one gets 'out there' and gains experience, often through trial and error, you become more thoughtful about each task, as you learn the skills and nuances and details of whatever it is you are attempting to do after a few 'tests' .... it gets easier as time goes on, with the right actions. cheers.

Since you are committed to a long term life in the wilderness with your wife, REALLY important that she develops the skills now.

How true, I've screwed up many fires because i was in a rush and didn't have enough middle size pieces of wood. Nice to see you explaining what your doing to us and your family. Thanks for making a dreary sunday morning a little sunnier.

I stumbled into your My Self Reliance page several months ago, and I have been completely captivated by it. I thought I had good skills until I saw some of the things you do. I grew up doing much of what you are doing in your videos on both channels, and yet I am always seeing something different or a different (sometimes more efficient) way of doing things, and other times I learn something completely new. You have inspired me and challenged me. I have a lot of respect for you.

Lol it looks so simple when you do it, who knew it was so complex! I'd probably chop my own foot off! 😝

Many people have. Or at least cut their leg anywhere from minor to major injuries. An axe, like many tools, is dangerous if not handled properly.

I love this video. I have learned so much from my husband about camping and being outdoors and love to see him teaching our children as well. Great job ladies!
