Hand-Built Stone Chicken Coop: Ultimate DIY Project for My Permaculture Homestead | Start to Finish

7 күн бұрынIt took 2 months to build alone, but my hand-split stone chicken coop is just about finished and the chickens are enjoying a dry roost safe from the many predators that live in the surrounding forest - bears, wolves, coyotes, foxes, martens, fishers, raccoons, weasels and birds of prey.
I am moving on to my next homestead building projects and will return to the coop to clean the stone of mortar and grout the joints later this summer.
Upcoming projects include another firewood storage shed, a small building to store lumber from my sawmill, a workshop expansion, a walk-in cooler and processing set up for wild game and domestic livestock, a maple sugar shack, a log sauna and a bedroom addition on my log cabin. Between building projects, I'm growing 1/2 an acre of food for my family, including an orchard, and another 5+ acres for wildlife and livestock. Most of our protein comes from fish and game that I harvest from the wilderness of Ontario Canada, and we're preparing to raise livestock again, including beef, goats and pigs in addition to poultry.

Through my years of watching you, you have consistently shown yourself to be the most creative and productive person on KZfaq. The fact that you also film, edit, narrate and post your content yourself makes it that much more impressive. I was so sorry for you when you essentially had to walk away from your previous property and all that hard work. I’m trying to understand what made you want. Such an adorable chicken house. It’s almost cuter than your own beautiful cabin. What does a fancy chicken house have to do with other people being rich?? And they should be allowed to make themselves rich. Everyone would if they could. It's necessary to have rich people because they provide job's for people like us. Why do people get so jealous of rich people. They are just as necessary as people like us. If you don't have rich people who own convenience stores, you wouldn't get gas to put in your car. If you didn't have car manufacturers, you wouldn't have one and the people making them wouldn't have a job. If they didn't have grocery stores, you wouldn't have food, MOST PEOPLE WOULDN'T. AND people wouldn't have job's so they could buy the food. They make the world go round. Stop being jealous of rich people. Make yourself rich if you don't like being poor. No one is stopping you. Most of them had to make themselves rich and earned it. Now the politicians that have gotten rich from money laundering, insider trading, and pay for play one's is another matter. Trump is the only president to leave office poorer than when he went in. Obama became a billionaire from a $500k a year salary. And went into office with a drop in the bucket compared to when he left. He sure didn't have all the homes he has now. Like owning a mansion on land surrounded by water that he has said will be gone soon because of global warming. Just proves he doesn't believe his own BS. Anyways, I can agree if it's the people that scam people to get rich like Bribem selling classified information to other countries. Or people like Soros that do evil with their money. year ago when you were building the first one on the land you ended up leaving, I would say in my head gee Sean, nobody gonna throw shade at you for using a power drill (instead of the old school hand drill, which is still awesome in its own right). I could be very wrong, but it's my opinion that Shawn built this ornate chicken coop as a way to learn new skills and hone them for application to future, larger projects. While he's certainly injected aesthetic elements into previous builds, most have been (for the most part) focused solely on function and practicalities. And while it's true that the success of achieving those values can be (and is, IMO) an aesthetic of it's own, a chicken coop is certainly a fantastic, small project to test out new ideas and skills on because, well, if you mess it up, it's just a chicken coop, right? I mean, think of the many new building methods and materials used in this project that he really hasn't ventured into in the past (at least, not on any videos that *I* have seen and I think I have watched them all). When have we seen him form and pour concrete footings? Normally he uses self-milled timbers that he chars to create rot and insect resistance. When have we seen him form and pour a concrete slab? And while the wall framing was conventional, he created curves in his roof forms for this project, something I don't remember him doing in past projects. It's true he started applying a masonry stone facade around the foundation of his cabin and the outdoor kitchen, but perhaps he realized he needed a bit more practice? Fitting and matching masonry stone work is an art that can take many years to master and how better to start than with a small chicken coop? Has he ever used cedar shingles as a finish roofing material before? Seems most of this previous roof have been standing seam metal. And did anyone notice the windows in the coop were hand-built leaded glass? Did he build those windows himself rather than buying pre-built windows? Maybe it's just me, but I am seeing at least 1/2 a dozen new skills, methods, and materials used in building this coop, which is why I think it was a "practice" project. Let's not forget he's been planning all along to build a main floor bedroom addition to his cabin... Really hope I didn't steal your thunder, Shawn!

Oh wow. That coop is storybook awesome! Even better than the cabin itself? On the serious side, your chickens are not safe with the gap around the base of the outer fenced area. Not only do chickens dig, but outside animals also dig and something will get in. We lined our outer area with brick to hold down fencing that prevents any breach. Or, you can dig down and bury fence so nothing can get in. We lost so many chickens to infiltrators and have learned that you have to eliminate all entry possibilities.

The fence extends 2 feet along the ground outside of the run and then is buried. It’s even better than burying it straight down. Cali and several raccoons have tested it for me :)

Growing up he built us an English Tutor home, it had 2 fireplaces, 1 in the kitchen, and led glass windows that he made. The coop is beautiful and built so well I was actually surprised not to see star plates in the roof rafters and the membrane that goes between the cement floor and the bottom wood to prevent the concrete from leaching moisture into the wood. They are a must for some house building and this is built as strong as some are. Absolutely can't wait to see what the chickens think of it in time. I'm betting that they thrive with it!

Shawn, I don’t know. I’ve watched your videos a long time. This log house, your raised beds, the forest garden, things you’ve done to attract wildlife, provide for the wildlife, and now, a really cute, well built chicken coup, SHEESH, MAN, I’m just shaking my head. You’ve forgotten more skills than I’ll ever learn/practice. It’s all just wonderful, Shawn. Thanks for sharing your life with us. WAY OVER AND BEYOND, MAN…from east Tennessee. Just curious, would bears ever be a problem…or just additional freezer meat?

If my father had built this when I was a child, he would have never been able to keep me out! I would have commandeered it as my playhouse and moved my toys right in with the chickens. I would have been crawling through that little tunnel and chasing chickens in the enclosure. What fun!!❤️🤗🐝
