If it would have been released the year before or after Forrest Gump it would have won plenty. Unfortunately it couldn't compete with Tom Hanks.

Forrest Gump, Pulp Fiction and Shawshank in the same year. Pulp Fiction is probably the best of those 3 but my favorite was Shawshank. In the end, Shawshank resonates with more people IMO.

Best movie / story / experience ever. Major props to King for dreaming up such an incredible tale, integrating believable characters in a period over time piece; thank you Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman for making a genuinely loving relationship between 2 heterosexual males seem real and tangible; and awe to Darabont and his cinematographer for placing your own brush strokes of art on canvas to an already masterful story while maintaining King's voice (and word-for-word dialogue). Side note: I wish Darabont had taken 11.22.63, my favorite King book to date, on at Hulu, pushed the whole thing to 2 solid seasons with 13 episodes per for a complete arc - beginning, middle and end - no sequels, no remakes - his own choice in casting, i.e., no James Franco ever! Petition anyone?:)

Proves that awards mean absolutely nothing. I liked Forrest Gump, but to compare the two movies it's almost a little unfair to poor Forrest. Very few movies project hope, oppression, and revenge the way Shawshank did. Truly a modern masterpiece
@muffdiver2404 жыл бұрын
"Shawshank's" masterpiece status doesn't detract from "Gump's" masterpiece status; nor vice-versa. No use comparing 'em - they're both great in their own way.

I agree. "Pull Fiction,"" Shawshank, "Forrest Gump," " Four Weddings &A Funeral" in the same year? All nominated; they got that right. Put it this way, "Forest" is a history of America. In "Shawshank" watching M. Freeman walking towards Tim Robbins on that beach, "I hope." " Pulp, " the genius of Tarrantino's jumping around in time plotting. And "Weddings," to borrow from a song " what is love anyways, can anybody tell me... " Well they try in this film.

@@brianmallen8887 best picture that year should have went to shawshank redemption or pulp fiction but they got the best actor right though tom hanks deserved it
@brianmallen88873 жыл бұрын
@@Gencturk92 well, if you asked the world that year, what their most beloved film was, by far it was "Forrest G." It just was. And it wasn't just Forrest the country was loving. They loved their "Luitenent Dan" too. I liked "Jenny" the best, cause she was the most human, the most flawed. The people in '95 ain't necessarily the same in 2020. So perspective counts. I'd say "Pulp" was the most influential, "Four Weddings" a revelation about love and the modern definition of marriage, "Shawshank" was a hero's quest, Andy Dufrain, and a redemption of Red, who's connection to Andy Dufrain made it possible. Which movie was the best? I can't say. I loved them all dearly. But you can count on the people voting with the one they personally relate to the most.
@Gencturk923 жыл бұрын
@@brianmallen8887 yeah well i have heard the same thing with shawshank redemption and pulp fiction being their favorite movie aswell and forrest gump being a fantasy, so what do you have to say about that ? everyone i speak to says one thing about the other and the other about the other so i dont know... but that year best picture, best director, best editing and adapted screenplay shouldn't have been forrest gump and why Tim Robbins never got a nomination but morgan freeman did and why frank darabont didn't get a nomination for director is beyond me. The oscars are messed up

Never underestimate the power of movies. I once was detained by ICE as a German national. I found myself in a detention center in Eloy, Arizona, where 99% of the inmate population was made up of Hispanics. Not my problem, right? As I speak and write several languages. WRONG. I remembered Andy Dufrane, on my bunk, in my cell. And I wrote letters to the catholic church in Arizona, who put me in touch with the prison outreach ministries, a Barbara Wilson.Now, there a Spanish books in this institution, thanks to the inspiration of this movie. Just wanted to share.

The original story was a Novela , a short story. The screenplay written by Frank Darabont is told in a very different way, contains a lot of expanded plot, subplots & characters which were not in the original short story to tell the story on film.. One has to know how to read a screenplay to fully appreciate the differences between script & novela but also to Frank Darabont's genius in his adaption.. The Shawshank Redemption is a masterclass in screenwriting from a writer on top of his craft..
