Shawshank came out the same year I finally got sober. When I saw it, the line " Get busy livin, or get busy dyin", hit me like a freight train. It was a summation of what I had been doing for a couple years with the help of so many people in the fellowship. To this day it is a summation of what is required to escape the behemoth "addiction"! This year, 2024, I will celebrate 30 years of continuous sobriety, and my life has never been better! There is so much in Shawshank that I completely relate to and experience everyday. I believe Shawshank Redemption is the most favorite movie of many people, including me.

I watched this gem of a film back in October 1994. Timecop was sold out and my former buddy and I decided to watch 'Shawshank Redemption'. We left the theater in awe. It was inspirational and an amazing film going experience. The eight people in attendance stood up and clapped after the film was over. I bragged about this movie to everyone. I have the original poster videocassette release hanging in my room. Gawd! I love this film.

Shawshank was one of the greatest films of all time. The characters and message of hope make it more classic over time.

A cinematic masterpiece. The irony is that back then, I used to go to movie theaters at least twice weekly. Was unaware of this film. Nobody I knew saw it. It wasn't promoted. I didn't hear about it until 10 years later. I watched it on cable TV and was blown away. I've seen it a dozen times since. The friendship between Tim and Morgan's characters was beautiful as was their performances. I hope to view it one day on a big screen. It's a classic! ❤❤

I saw this movie after it was released. I literally walked away saying, " This is one of the best movies ever made" to this day. On or during a holiday time etc. I stop and watch. Absolutely one of my all-time favourite movies. Great cast, great writing, beautifully acted and directed, great cinematography. It had everything.

No one mentions the antagonist, a 1-derful, versatile actor, Robert (Bob) Gunton, not a household name but a face that is impossible to forget since Shawshank came into our lives.

The movie was not about a prison escape plot. Shawshank Redemption was about trust and love against all odds, in a place where trust and love rarely happen.

Just goes to show how worthless the Oscars are when this movie didn’t win in any category.

The ending of the movie makes the whole thing worth it! I love the way the posters in Andy's cell marked the decades.

Was visiting a friend in San Francisco when this came out. We got tickets and it wasn't till about 15 minutes or so in that I realized this was based on the KIng novella. The audience was stunned, then out of nowhere the clapping started and a standing ovation broke out at the end of the film. Amazing.

"The Shawshank Redemption" has now reached the same number of years, that Red spent in Shawshank prison. Didn't think when I saw it back when that it would become such a classic. Although I left the theater thinking: "This is the kind of film, that used to be an American classic."

My husband loved this film. It took him 5 years for a degenerative disease to finally take him in 2023 and I have no idea how many times he watched this film. Many, many times. I have watched it quite a few times myself over the years. It is like To Kill A Mocking Bird or The Lord Of The Rings. You see and contemplate on something new or maybe some little nuance you missed before. It has a way of being timeless and, finally, when principles and right and justice finally triumph, also life affirming. The Shawshank Redemption story is a classic of writing prowess by Stephen King and a classic of film and film making as well.

Just proof having great box office numbers and winning awards means nothing. One of the only movies I can watch over and over and not get bored with it. Many I can barely see twice

My father produced the first movie Morgan Freeman appeared in, another prison movie, "Brubaker".

Shawshank just gets stronger and stronger from year to year.

Never before in history has America needed a Shawshank redemption ethos than the present one.

I remember watching this film at home on video for the 1st time. I was that blown away with it that I immediately rewound the video and watched it again. Absolutely amazing film and one of my all time favourites.

I will always remember going to a $2.50 matinee in Bradenton, FL with my parents and aunt and uncle to see this film. We all so enjoyed it and spoke of it days later. Its a film that easy to watch again.

I saw this movie on my first trip to NZ from U.K. It was shown to the whole plane as ‘the movie’ after everyone’s dinner (no individual back of seat viewing screens back then!!) on the LA to Auckland leg of the journey. Awesome movie experience. I am sure everyone who saw it with me on that flight have found memories remembering their first viewing then. What a captivating story of friendship and an amazingly uplifting ending to a movie.

My absolute two favorite movies of all time and I still watch them are: Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. I’m normally an action movie watcher but those 2 movie are on a different level. I think it’s a humanistic level. Great acting and an amazing story. Oh and number 3 is Forest Gump at a VERY close 3rd.

Exceptional film and performances. Not long after release I was in a gas station restroom in the middle of almost nowhere and on top of the paper towel dispenser was a neatly folded brand new T-shirt for "Club Zihuatanejo" in Mexico. Yes I had to take it. I wore it out years later...

I saw it in the theater on day one because I had read the story in 1982 and it was on a short list of King pieces that I wanted to adapt to the screen. At the end of the movie I was crying. Because of how great it was and that I knew I could never have made this great of an adaptation myself.

They seem like pretty cool dudes. I got to meet Robbins 5 months ago and got to tell him personally how much of a favorite movie this was for me and how myself and my coworkers would often quote lines from it. He was a down to Earth guy and very soft spoken and he graciously thanked me for the compliment. Very cool for me to be able to tell him personally as most the time we don't get to tell our favorite actors how much we enjoy their work.

As good as it gets. This film could have been made in any era, 1930's, 40's, 50's, etc. and it would have become a classic. Every performance in it is brilliant. There's not a wasted word or moment. The culmination of it, with Morgan Freeman's timeless voice, is a sledgehammer to the heart. Beautiful writing. Pitch perfect direction. This was such a fertile time in American cinema, with so many great films in the 90's, of such variety and quality and great, memorable performances. "Shawshank" is the epitome of that. I think it's the last great era of American cinema.

When they put those 2 together, they made magic. That's all that's all I can say. 2 of my favorite actors. And the whole cast was magnificently sculpted.

I tecall watching this in the cinema 30 years ago. Recall everyone stunned into silence at the end, some crying silent tears of joy,(including me.) Then the clapping started. Never seen anything like that before or since. Like a spiritual experience. Closest to that was end of Gladiator. Amazing movie.

Go check out the list of movies that came out in 1994 the year Shawshank was released. Wonder why it didnt win Oscars? Pulp Fiction, Gump, Schindlers List, Philadelphia, The Fugitive and The Remains of the day. Insane. I didnt even mention the blockbusters like Jurrassic Park, Speed, True lies, Tombstone etc

This movie was amazing and is in my Top 5 of All Time with The Pelican Brief, The Natural, Something The Lord Made, and Steel Magnolias. I can be stranded on a desert island (w/ electricity…and only have those movies…and a home theatre system…

I actually saw this movie in the theater. I was 16, so no idea why I chose to see it but it was amazing.

In my top five… saw it in the theater when it came out initially… watched it many times since. It’s a phenomenal movie… now a classic.

This was a short story written by Stephen King. I had read it, but did not know that was the movie I was watching at the theater. I kept thinking, "I knew that was about to happen," over and over, but never realized how I knew until the credits. It is one of my very favorite movies. (And I highly recommend "Different Seasons," the book that includes this story plus three other Stephen King short stories -- THREE of which were made into movies, including "Stand by Me.")

i just went to st croix and walked the beaches of sandy point. it was very cool to know the last scene was filmed there. it wasn't a normal beach. alot of elevation on the sands, currents, and when stepping into the ocean was neck high. the colors of the ocean were amazing though. if i could post pics i would

Saw it in the cinema when it came out because I've been a long time Stephen King fan and knew he can write great non-horror stories like Stand By Me. Broke my heart because it was such a perfect film and only 7-10 people were watching it.

This is one of those rare films where every single character was perfectly cast and everyone gave an incredible performance and combined with a timeless story and impeccable direction, the result is the perfect movie. 👍😃👍

I was middle aged before I realized Morgan Freeman was Easy Reader that I'd watched as a five-year-old on The Electric Company.

The script, acting, score, cinematography... all close to perfection.

What made the film work for me was the character actors. Brilliant cast.
