So is this one of those very rare instances where the movie is actually better than the book?

Another fact: Stephen King sold the rights to Frank Darabont for $5,000 and never cashed the check. Instead he sent it back to Frank Darabont and said, "In case you ever need bail money. Love, Steve."

My favorite bit is how the warden shoots himself. All along he knew just how cruel their treatment of the prisoners was, he never actually believed they were "rehabilitating" them. So of course he doesn't want to end up in prison.

One of the greatest films ever made!

This was filmed in Mansfield, Ohio. My family and I were background "actors" in it. I was like 12 years old and in the Greyhound bus scene. Cool movie

I don’t know about the book but in the film the redemption wasn’t Andy’s but Red’s. Andy wasn’t guilty and never truly lost hope, however Red was admittedly both guilty and had lost hope. He therefore needed to be redeemed, which is why his last words and the those of the entire film are “I hope” as well as the Andy story with relationship to Red borrowing heavily on the Christ story.

When I first saw this in the theatre, I was the only one in the group of friends who'd read the book. So I knew the basic plot, but the changes and embellishments they gave it were a (nice) surprise. One thing I find interesting is a scene I loved in the book (and apparently, so did many other readers) but was deleted. Frank Darabont explains why in his notes to the published script. After the tunnel is discovered, Norton gets a skinny young guard to go down the hole. Said guard makes it down the shaft, and calls back up, "Smells like shit...oh, shit, it IS shit!!!" and pukes his guts up. Red just falls over laughing and Norton claps him in solitary--which doesn't bother Red at all because he spends the whole two weeks laughing over it all! Darabont figured that this fan-fave scene should be in the movie. It was scripted and filmed (but isn't on the DVD special features)...and fell absolutely flat with test audiences. Darabont couldn't figure out why--and then he realized that after the shocking reveal of the tunnel, we needed to know HOW Andy did it...we didn't need to delay it for three minutes to spend it on a character we'd never seen before. Hence, the much more effective jump-cut from the hole in the wall to the police cars zooming towards Shawshank. Textbook example of something that works on the page, but not onscreen.

The book also states what crimes the inmates did which I found to give them a totally different perspective as in the film you kinda forget that these men are in for life for bad crimes. Brooks for example was a hard con man who murdered his wife and daughter, whereas Red put a large insurance policy on his wife and cut the brakes on her car, but she picked up her neighbour and her son, his actions killed all 3.

I love that Red goes to the parole board all angry at the end and they finally release him. "I swear to God. Release me, don't release me, I dont give a damn. I will kill again." *stamp accepted*

You didn't mention one of the biggest differences, namely, the ending. In the movie, we see Red and Andy reunite in Mexico, while in the novella it's left open whether he makes it across the border. Also, minor nitpick, but Red is the main character, not Andy. He's the main perspective for the audience, and he's also the one that grows and changes through the course of the story.

When someone says “the book is always better than the movie” they clearly don’t read a lot of books. Check out Forest Gump next.

A lot of what Brooks feels in the film is taken from the end of the novella when Red is finally free. Red becomes a bag boy and is surprised at the speed of everything. Without the suicide of course.

We read/watched this in my high school film and literature class. I ended up using “get busy living or get busy dying” as my senior quote. One of my favorite films of all time, and one of my favorite Stephen King stories

A lot of Stephen King adapted films are terrible, but a few, like this one, are better than the original. I would put The Shining, The Green Mile, and 1408 on that list.

HERE'S AN INTERESTING "WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE" TO DO: If you haven't heard, they're planning a remake of SCARFACE. The 1983 Al Pacino Drug Lord movie is itself a remake of the 1932 Paul Muni Gangster film which in turn was based upon the novel by Armitage Trail... which in turn was inspired by the life and crimes of Al Capone. It would be interesting to talk about the differences between the book and BOTH films and their parallel to the real life story of Capone.

If anyone is interested, go watch Chris Stuckman's video on Shawshank. He visits many of the locations from the film, and they all remain virtually untouched, appearing almost exactly as they do in the movie.

My favourite movie of all the time by far. Incredible story, amazing narrative, and so immersive. Truly the makings of a legendary film.

This is one of the only stories where I genuinely can't choose between the book and the movie. They're both so damn good.

There is one thing in the book that is easy to miss that absolutely changes the entire tone of Andy's character. Both book and movie depicts Andy as an innocent man caught in a dark corrupt system. However, in the story "apt pupil" it is reviled that Andy laundered money for the nazi protagonist Dussander. Which makes sense when you think of a major plot point is Andy laundering money for the warden. "Boom a bonus thing you didn't know"

I've watched this movie dozens of times. Only now noticed the warden handing Andy the Bible, saying "Salvation lies within." And Andy hid his pick-axe in that bible. BRILLIANT! How could I have missed it all these years? Thank you for enlightening me.

One of the key details in the book… That is not discussed in the movie… Is that Andy gains access to a set of prison plans… And is able to confirm that there is no great over the end of the sewer pipe which would have been a big surprise if he would’ve made it all the way to the end and been stuck… The movie does not explore that detail… Pretty important actually

This is one of the rare films where I had high expectations going into it and discovered that it's better than I thought it was going to be. Easily one of my all time favorite movies.

If you ask me, you left of probably the most important difference between the movie and the book. Towards the end of the movie (after Tommy is killed and Andy finally gets out of solitary), Andy seems like a beaten man, someone that may have lost the hope he claimed couldn't be taken away. And by taking his frame of mind into account, when Haywood says that he "came by the shop askin' for a length of rope", you sit there with Red during that stormy evening thinking the worst. And then Andy doesn't come out of his cell at role call, you feel the hope has left the movie, only to be lifted up during Red's re-telling of Andy's escape and the downfall of Norton and Hadley. If I remember correctly, in the book Red just mentions that Andy escaped from Shawshank, no lead up, no playing with your emotions or twisting your expectations. Just states the fact that Andy escaped. THAT is the biggest difference between the movie and the book, and you kinda left it out. Way to go.....

My son ridiculed me for not having seen Deadpool. But he's never even heard of The Shawshank Redemption. 🤔

I like that the antagonist meet their demise, it’s one of the most Satisfying in cinema history.

Still my favorite movie. I watch it a few times a year and it never gets old. I love the soundtrack.

After the movie, I always wanted to know what happened next in the years that followed. I always wanted them to do a spinoff/sequel to the movie set 25 years after Andy's escape (25 years after the original film) have the movie take place in the early 90s and have them show what Red and Andy had been up to since the prison. Maybe the film can be centered around someone in Mexico finding out who Red and Andy really are and that can be the conflict of the film to make sure that their real identities never get out.

ITS ABOUT TIME! IVE ONLY BEEN BUGGING YOU ABOUT THIS FOR YEARS.

Funny thing is, by having Norton and Hadley there before and after Andy's 19 years in Shawshank, it actually created a cruel irony that the movie failed to recognize. Andy was an inmate so naturally he could never leave Shawshank but Norton and Hadley were free men and could have moved on to better prospects but for over 20 years they stayed locked in the same positions. Norton appeared to be an ambitious man who perhaps had a bright eye for politics, but you never see him running for any public office or get a promotion to a more cushy post within the department of corrections. Hadley was already captain of the Guards and his only real superior was Norton who naturally never disapproved of his methods, so what stopped Hadley from being offered a post somewhere more to his liking? Why didn't he become a Warden of his own prison? Both men's lives were stuck in a perpetual rut, spending day after day, year after year in the same place doing the same thing over and over, like the very inmates they held. The cruel irony of it all was that they were just as much a prisoner as Andy only worse because they could leave anytime but never do.

I remember watching the shawshank redemption. I was speechless throughout the entire end Credits. I thought to myself Man. That is hands down the best movie ive ever seen.

I like the book more only because the book hints at the possibility Andy may have actually killed his wife. Or at least paid to have her killed

The one thing that always bothered me about this movie is how the tunnel to escape is in a wall rather than the floor. In the scene where they search Andy's cell there is a window on one of the other walls... his cell is not underground, so what is he tunneling through? Love the movie, just a pet peeve I cant seem to shake haha
