i think one of the main reasons Shayne is considered the backbone is that you can pair him with any cast member and you'll get a ton of comedic chemistry, he knows exactly how to play off of each member individually and it always makes for funny content

Shayne receiving a compliment and then right away giving the crew their flowers too, it shows that he truly cares about the people he works with. Also my fav Shayne moment is when he was helping Oliva with her fear of butterflies.

I really appreciate how well-read Shayne is. Like, he’s definitely been to college, but never stopped learning about both the world and his personal interests. On top of that, his charisma, humor, humility, and respect are top notch. If only he was tall too…

I mean no disrespect to any other cast or crew members but after losing interest in Smosh for the better part of a decade of my life, it was Shayne and his bits on TNTL that got me to check the channel out again and it's honestly him more than anyone, even Ian and Anthony, that I look forward to seeing in new videos. Again though, no disrespect to anyone else, I think everyone has their own strengths and are funny in their own ways, I just feel personally like Shayne is the best part of modern Smosh and I could easily see him becoming the new face of the company someday post-Ian and Anthony

I mean, Backbone is actually an apt description, especially as Keith, Angela, and Shayne defines it. He's good on his own, but with others he really is amazing, he is holding them all up, giving them an admirable posture. Like any well-defined spine does.

Shayne is definitely the backbone. I know he doesn’t care about it but that man works hard to be funny, and he doesn’t even need to because he’s just naturally funny. It’s easier to find people with similar skills that can produce the shows and do the behind the scene work, but the raw comedic talent that Shayne brings cannot be found so easily. Smosh has been around for so long and no cast member has not come close to Shayne’s talent. Not to say that the rest of the cast aren’t funny, because they’re hilarious and very talented, but you can always see their limitations. Whereas Shayne, that dude was born to make people laugh.

Shayne sure has good chemistry with lots of fellow Smosh personalities.

He's kinda been the main guy to me for years now, Ian will always have the legacy but he's taken a step back in recent years, Anthony is back but I feel like we barely ever see him in videos. Shayne is in A LOT of stuff, helps elevate multiple shows and has been a fan favorite for years. He's humble, everyone obviously contributes to Smosh (wouldnt be around if it were a one man show) but in my eyes he'll always be THE backbone

I absolutely understand Shayne’s stance that the people behind the scenes are the real backbone, but there’s still something to be said about being able to bounce off whatever energy other cast members throw at him. The ability to roll with whatever bit anyone else has on a channel with a lot of improv or off-the-cuff jokes/commentary makes him the broth of the Smosh soup. You can add a lot of things to the soup, some Keith, some Olivia, a little Angela if you’re feeling crazy, and someone else is definitely cooking the soup and prepping ingredients, but without a solid broth that goes well with anything? The soup just isn’t as good. Shayne is that broth.

Shayne very much knows he’s the backbone but cannot and will never admit it because as soon as he says he’s the backbone, he isn’t anymore.

I like the way you redefined backbone near the beginning of the video. What could have been a somewhat toxic video turned into one showcasing someones strengths.

While I love everyone now, crew included; Shayne is the one who got me into Smosh because I found him hilarious. His sense of humor is very Chris Farley (one of my personal favs) for me. He also plays off others very well. He and Angela might be one of my favorite pairings. But what I'm getting from this is that Damien loves Shayne (and of course Shayne loves Damien), which isn't much of a surprise but very cute to see.

To counter i think that the members including the crew are also the backbones of smosh. Think about it, there isnt one backbone is there are many. Shayne being the backbone and as funny as he is, is because he plays to the crew and other on screen members. I think the reason we say so is because of the chemistry he has with others and how much we enjoy seeing that in videos. Shayne is great already on his own but he is greatER with everyone else he shares the screen with (in front of or behind the camera).

I truly believe that every person (or in this case we’ll just say every actor) at smosh plays a vital roll and Shayne being the “Backbone” fits perfectly. I don’t think I can do a full run down and dissect every person individually to show their role at the moment but they all contribute something to smosh and have their purpose. Shayne just so happens to be the backbone because he has chemistry with every single person. He is just very charismatic. I honestly really want to hear other people’s opinions on what the other cast members would be. Like who would be the heart of the group, the brain etc, if anybody has their opinions please share!
