That photographer is extremely unprofessional and in the wrong. Is that even legal for her to be sharing images from the wedding to anyone other than the paying client?

This is wild. Always : 1. Check their portfolio and background check the photographer (clientele review) first before hiring. 2. If you're hiring a friend or family member to take photos, always have a written( black & white) contract. That way, your photographer will never be able to delay the delivery process. That's just it. I don't know what else can I suggest to have people to avoid being scammed on wedding photography

Wow how is that even legal to give other’s pictures to someone else 🤯 I’ve only worked with one professional photographer for a newborn shoot for my daughter but I was METICULOUS about the privacy & copyright of both myself & the photographer. I can’t imagine dealing with this. If it were me, I’d sue the photographer 💯

I’m a wedding photographer and wow I’m so shook at all of this. I always have a contract detailing when I will send them the photos and I always send sneak peeks within 2-3 days 🤪. I’ve worked with friends before but for me just bc they’re friends doesn’t mean the professionalism goes down if anything I’m more intentional to make it professional👏🏽

Something similar happened to my friend. Her wedding photographer was a friend of her mother-in-law, so the photographer sent the photos to the MIL instead of directly to the bride and groom.

I would love to know who the photographer is. This is the kind of thing her future clients should really know about. I would never ever want to hire someone so disrespectful and careless for such an important, once in a lifetime event. That photographer should never shoot weddings again. Shame on her.

Friends and family hires are a recipe for failure, but at least the bride now knows the sister-in-law is not to be trusted. Good luck staying married to that family...

My friend (I was the MOH) actually hired her friends to be the photographers (they do it professionally) and it was great! Since they knew many people at the wedding, they blended in and the results are amazing. But I can see how this is the exception and how the dynamics in the friend group could go wrong, were there any problems. Luckily, this is amazing group of people and the photographers shot several weddings within the friend circle.

I don't know if the bride has a contract with this photographer, but typically, the photos taken at someone's wedding belong to the client. You should not be sending even one photo to someone who isn't the person who hired you! That's their property (unless the photographer contracts right to keep photos that are not going to be used in the package due to quality issues). This photographer does not sound professional at all.

Love your commonsense comments, comedic commentary and professional standards. Both of our children got married last year and had 2 very different photographers with unique styles. Best thing was they listened to their clients and worked with them whilst utilising their particular skill set, it’s the process as much as the product. I don’t think this particular photographer understands that & I suspect the SIL has been in her ear about the bride.

I'm still upset for my sister when I think about her wedding photographer. She used a cousin of a close friend. She received her photos within a reasonable timeframe, but this gal was not a professional and it showed. A lot of the photos were dark and just, not great. Don't pinch pennies with a photographer, y'all.

This story reminds me of an ill fated etsy transation that started in July 2022 that I still haven't gotten resolved. I order a slow fashion pair of dungarees. They took months to arrive, but I expected that of course as it's one person making the garment. Only problem was.... they send the WRONG item! I contacted the seller and they gave a lackadaisical half apology and said I could send it back and they would fix it. (did not apologize for sending the wrong item in the first place) I sent it back months ago and have yet to receive the fixed garment. They stopped responding to my messages altogether and have taken down their storefront. I feel very frustrated because it wasn't a cheap item of clothing! I have questioned myself about this like I am being the a-hole to a small business owner? But I think I am allowed to be frustrated in this situation.

I pretty much always photograph family photos of people that are close to the couple. Host couple? Photo. Personal attendant is there with her significant other? Photo. I think it's a wonderful way for the couple to remember who attended their wedding. They can even have these images printed out and then send them to said couple in their thank you cards. I'm not sure I have ever had anyone use those photos on their Christmas cards- but I can understand why she took them. My clients love it and I've booked a few weddings from people that attended past events where I photographed them and their family. Of course, these images are not top of my shot list, but they are nice if I can get them!! They are generally not planned. Just a 'oh, hey! I know you mean a lot to the bride and groom. Can I take your photo?" type of deal.

I'm not a professional photographer, I build websites, and I only do pics for friends and family. But I at least act professional! I make sure that pics are sent less than a month after, and I aim to get the 5 or so best pics within a week. The last one took longer because I wasn't given an email address to send stuff to until a bit later, which wasn't my fault as I had asked earlier. A few pics took longer because I had to install a new program to get them to be print quality, and even then, I'm still waiting for which pics they want printed. Next time I'll make things clearer with making an agreement ahead of time with the procedure laid out in more than just an in person discussion.

For whatever reason, wedding photography and relatives/friends are so tricky. I took a bunch of dreamy Instax Wide photos for a friend of mine at her wedding. I used a particular manual camera which produced nice soft focus with a lot of background blur. I took some shots of kids and gave it to them as gifts. It was my idea, they had a professional photographer who did a great job, my thing was just for fun. They also had point-and-shoot Instax cameras for the guests to take pics. What was funny, though, is that my friend didn't end up with basically any of my pics, because her sweet grandma picked some photos for herself to take, and she picked mine! She didn't think much of it, since there were many other shots left. In the end, we all had a good laugh about it, and I'm glad the grandma has nice memories to look at, with some great bokeh, too!😂

I have a friend who got married at the beginning of November who had a friend photograph her wedding. My friend had a pretty tight wedding budget and said this friend gave her a deal. The photographer told my friend it would be 2 weeks to get her photos. My friend has received none of her wedding photos. My friend has asked her photographer once about the photos and was told she was still working on them. No one should have to wait over 3 months for their wedding photos.

Customer service is a thing, insisting upon it, or complaining about bad service is not being an hysterical woman - or, in current parlance, being a "Karen".

Don’t hire family or friends PERIOD. I don’t care if it’s a simple bullshit thing. It destroys relationships. My father is a very charitable person. He’s a carpenter and a large amount of people that he did work for that were friends or family fucked him over. It goes both ways. Just don’t do it.

not sure how professional that "professional" photographer is if they were willing to shoot a wedding without a contract clearly outlining when the client can expect their photos along with all the other pertinent details. I've worked weddings and have seen my fair share of unreasonable clients, but this person is definitely not in the wrong. Unless there are details we're missing here the photographer is in the wrong.

First off the Bride should not have sent a tip until the work was completed and given to her and her new husband. The photographer has not incentive to complete it quickly. I have a few ideas about this photographer and her behavior. It may be one of the reasons I listed below. 1) The Sister in Law obviously does not really care for the new bride for whatever the reason and is probably have talked ir is talking crap about her marrying her brother. The photographer feels or knows directly that The SIL does not respect the Bride or hold hostility for her and she has let her friend the photographer know this. Otherwise, she would have had those pictures sent to because it is her friend’s brother who was married and their family and friends were at the wedding and in the photos. 2) The brother is awfully quiet about his wedding pictures that were taken by his sisters friend. It seems to me he would have spoken to his sister about her friend to resolve this matter and get those photos delivered. This leads me to believe the Brother(Groom), quite possibly had something going on with this woman; sexual or strong flirting with this photographer and for this reason he is being silent on the issue bc he does not want his new wife knowing that someone he had a fling with was at their wedding taking the sacred wedding photos🧐🕵️‍♀️ This is personal with the photographer bc she knew giving the SIL a photo of the wedding before letting the Bride even see the pic, she absolutely knew this would piss her off. She may have been the previous GF or 3) How much was the tip. Was it an adequite amount for the photograper and her staff, if any? The time that it is taking to edit the photos is extremely long, seeing that the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons have both rolled around. athe photographer may hqve been editing the photos al, then receives a Venmo text. She opens it up and sees it is a cheap tip and says to herself. This cheap a&$!&@!!! She will get theae pics when I given them to her.

Wow, I feel like I lucked out with our friend of family photographer. He was a friend of my FIL who paid for all the photos. The photographer did send the digital photos and prints to my in-laws but they immediately got them framed and brought them to us so I wasn’t too upset about the photos going to them first.

Wedding photos take a month + . Remember , it’s a business meaning there’s more clients, more pictures to edit than just that one wedding. I feel like there’s a lot of information missing from OP. Was there a contract? Was the tip the only payment they sent the photographer . There’s no reason why a photographer would hold wedding pictures unless they aren’t getting paid.

Happened to us 2yrs ago. It was mini Holiday photo session of my dogs (for only 5 photos) so i can use it for holiday cards. 3wks later, still got nothing. Emailed a couple of times. No response. Weeks later, she replied and was pissed that I politely asked where my photos are . I tried reaching out so many times but she just ignored it and then got so mad at me for asking. She eventually cancelled the whole thing and refunded me the money. I was so upset. My 2 little corgis put so mch effort on that photoshoot only to get cancelled. That really put me on beastmode. I didnt say anything bad to her, i just emailed back and told her i hope you dont treat your clients like this ever again because this is very unprofessional. I ended up getting my own Canon R6 and 8.5mm RF 1.2f lens and became a photographer of my own dogs and got a few clients later. A nightmare turned into a positive outcome.
