More people that have "aggressive dogs" need to see this. I think a lot of the problem is some "expert" says "aggressive dog they will kill anything", and then the owners provide no socialization out of fear. I think you may have changed these owners' lives, and you have 100% opened up this dog's life. A+ work!

Hey Joel, my 11 mo Harrier is super social… We had a small incident at the dog park yesterday where she was playing with a border collie and she tried to put her paws on his head and the collie snapped at her… They were totally fine after that and I was trying to calm the female owner that he was just teaching my dog a lesson… The owner was so scared and wanted to take her dog home… I told her to watch your channel to learn how older dogs teach pups… I hope I was correct in doing so 🤔

I corrected him instantly, but at the same time I was telling myself it wasn’t that big of a deal and my dog did that because the other one had started it when we first met him and mine should be allowed to “defend himself”. Nothing to do with this particular video. However, these methods work. I walk my dog without a leash in a rural town with deer, moose, rabbits, other dogs, etc. my dog always stays by my side and obeys. We constantly get compliments. We have been asked who trained our dog, and we did it ourselves. In fact, this is the first dog my wife has had….she does 90% of the training. It started with watching these videos and doing two to three mile plus walks a day while practicing these methods. Our dog is 18 months and a joy to have around.

I watch and trust your videos more than any others, especially when it comes to socialization, because you explain the body language in time with the training session. My experience with trainers has ranged from positive only, intensely rough old-school, and reliant on shock collars. Would you ever do a commentary of dogs at dog parks so we could understand the behavior in other scenarios?

Also goes after things on wheels like bikes or skates etc. But from working with her myself, I KNOW she’d be like this one. Because, I made my friend have her meet my dog but on a walk (my dogs pays no attention to other dogs when on walks), and the body language was there where you can tell, once my friends dog got to be able to smell and know my dog, she was happy. Although, my friend needs the most training to be honest lol

With my own and others experience to count on, i would say the lack of knowledge with the owners is often a deciding factor on why some dogs act "badly"(Sure sometimes genetics can play a part, especially the way some breeders operate.). You could almost say the "70/30 principle" applies = 70% lies with the owner and getting them the proper knowledge, the remaining 30% will often flow naturally once the owners got said knowledge and knows how to apply it to their dogs. Also to your point of doing a "packwalk", it´s a really underutilized tool of socializing dogs and a way to really get the dogs and owner to be rehabilitated into a working cohesive😉

I had no idea dogs react more to German shepherds and huskies. That explains why my Anna low growled at a friendly husky in a pet friendly store. But could be that we were at the checkout so it was enclosed but my girl also met another husky at a soccer field and would play until Zoe my other one was by the other owner and she would get jealous and I’d have to tell her settle and back her off and then they’d go back to playing. My girl is a border collie lab and Zoe is border collie. They are both a year and a half now, Anna is a month older. They met these dogs earlier this year. But it’s good to know what to work on more around certain breeds. Very interesting!

I noticed 2 things in this video: 1. The owners seemed very apprehensive/nervous (prior events could have led to that emotion.) and i know that dogs can and will pick up on those emotions and react in a "protective" or "aggressive" way. 2nd: The previous "trainer" ( and i use this term very loosely.) should not be training dogs probably. Especially since even the owners in my understanding who is lacking in knowledge about the breed and the psychology of the dog in question. Yet they still questioned the previous trainers methods... So glad they were able to get a session with you Joel and see the fantastic and happy dog that was behind their fearbased projection of who she was. Now it´s just sweat and elbow-grease, then they will in all likelyhood have a very friendly and happy dog. Kudos once again to you Joel and keep up the good work! catch you in the next one 💯👍🏻

Thank you for your comment, we are the dog owners in this video and are so grateful to Joel that he was able to show us her potential. What wasn't mentioned in this video was that we rescued her from the shelter, as an owner surrender for attacking another dog. She is not our first American bulldog, we know the breed well, but she is our first rescue (2 or 3 yrs old when we got to her). While we have no other history of her past before us, she has attacked a neighbor dog requiring surgery and has come close several other times even while still on leash, hence our hesitation but desire to find a controlled, professional environment to take that next step. We are looking forward to giving our girl the best life possible! 💕

My now 13 year old Lab/beagle mix was always thought to be aggressive towards other dogs, as well. I was told upon getting him that he did not do well with dogs bigger than him. After 10 years of having him, we had issues with the neighbors dogs at the beginning, but we soon learned it wasn't our dog, it was theirs. He has gotten along well with every dog since. For our dog, it turned out to be people not realizing he was doing NORMAL corrective behavior towards the younger dogs. He lives happily with our GSD, and has regular play dates with an Australian shepherd mix (who is massive), and a Cockapoo. All of them he corrected when they were being too nosey, or too excited, and all of them have learned what he will and will not tolerate. They all cuddle puddle up and play perfectly now.

Hey there! So I wanted to comment on a video you did back in January, when you said that single, white women with no kids are Karen’s when it comes to training their dogs because it’s purely positive training with zero discipline. I am all those things with a 4 year old GSD. First, I want to say I am right there with you and love your style of training. Second, I have used many of your methods and it works. We are not all Karen’s, but this comment is not about that as much as it is about letting you know that your methods do work and Lucy (my GSD) is a prime example of that. I have the deepest bond with her, so much so that I never had to train off leash because she doesn’t want to wander to far from the one person she trusts more than anyone and that is me. Thank you for the videos and for being realistic in a industry that is trying to downplay the importance of discipline. You are a breath of fresh air in the dog training industry.

Great video - especially for dog body language /communication & the fact that a dog won't necessarily "like" or "get along with" every dog- there's an unspoken 'conversation', and that conversation can differ from dog to dog / environment - to do better for our dogs, we've got to learn the language!

Anyone who has a dog and brings it to you for help is an awesome dog owner, basically because they care, and they want to make theirs and the dogs life better. It is very interesting to see how many owners on your videos control their dogs with a tight leash. I know it is a totally automatic thing to do, and giving your dog a loose leash takes training and practice for the owner. We hear about stress and nerves travelling down the leash to the dog and them feeling it, I have seen this so clearly in a couple of recent videos and it really visualizes the theory. 👍💪🐶♥️

I live in Maryland and I wish I had known about Beckman's 3 years ago. If I had, my boy Minnow, 110 American Bulldog, may have been around a lot longer. He was aggressive toward my 65lb Boxer Bentley and my mother I had to keep them separated for 5 years on different floors of the house or they would go in for a full dog fight. In 5 years I had most likely broken up 10 or more dog fights between due to human error and letting them accidentally get together . The last one was the worse. I was able to get them apart even though my hands were hamburger from pulling Minnows jaws off of Bentley and holding him by the jaws so the only thing he was clamping down on were my hands. My poor mother fell but was able to restrain our Boxer while I forced Minnow into our basement bathroom and got the door shut. In the end while Bentley was kenneled I let Minnow out to get him to our second floor, but he went right after Bentley in the crate but thankfully couldn't get him. Unfortunately my mother was still on the floor so instead Minnow latched on to her arm and started shaking. Even though both hands were in pain and a complete wreck (more like hamburger) I was able to pry him off her arm and get him to the second floor and crated. I had to make the hardest decision of my life and have him put down the next day by the vet while i was having emergency surgery on my hands because the specialist were afraid I would lose the use of both my hands. We adopted him at 5 years old and raised him till he was 10 and he had always had issues due to coming from an abusive family, but he was my boy always attached at my hip. I still look back and wonder if I could have done something different to help him in the 5 years I raised him and loved him and not be living with the guilt I have every day. If I had known about Beckman's maybe, just maybe, he would have stood a better chance and he and Bentley may have gotten along. I know for a fact that Positive training would have never worked. I am sorry for the long post but I think I needed this to just remember and cry a little because I still miss Minnow and to get it off my chest so to speak.

Oh man! What a tragic story. I’m sorry you and your mother went through all that. My boy Reggie is about 110 lbs, but I raised him from a pup. I can’t imagine how scary that was. AB’s are incredibly strong. I’ve had one run in with a pitbull and Reggie, and when that dog attacked him, there was no stopping either of them without a gun. Thankfully Reggie stopped on his own once he had the other dog pinned to the ground, but I’d never seen an actual fight like that between dogs before, and I thought for sure he was going to finish the job no matter how much I yelled and pulled. I couldn’t imagine going through what you did. I’m in Maryland too, so if you ever see a skinny white boy walking around Towson area with a big ol bulldog, that’s probably me and Reggie! Say hi and give em a scratch. Bless!

I’m so happy you posted a video bro I’ve been missing seeing your videos, we need to see some more THE door method and THE leash walking method and stuff just like this one lol. You have the best videos and every dog is different but it still works for probably close to all dogs.

I mean there's plenty of coverage on the door and leash walking methods. If you still struggle with it I'd go back and rewatch them. There's not really a lot he could add to them I think. We do need more videos of this, if only to watch a dog socialize properly for the first time.

New to the channel just wanted to say , Amazing that you care about these beautiful animals . Hard for me to own another dog , the bond is so strong when they pass it’s just destroys me . I lost one about 8 years back . I let my father in law keep him one day I went for a job interview in another state came back 24 hours later and he passed from some sort of heat stroke . I cried for a week atleast and could never let myself get passed it .
