What I love about the training with this dog is how you allow the owner to be “trained” along with his dog which is so amazing to watch! Us owners need to learn along with our dogs usually & once we get it then our dogs have an easier time following our lead. You guys are so amazing for working with the dogs that most trainers don’t want to deal with because I’m sure this training is going to change this family’s life for the better 🤗

So many people say they understand that dog training is about training the owner. But they really don't get it. Don't even think about changing your dog's behavior unless you truly understand that you have to change your behavior first. And that's harder than actually training a dog. You must commit to changing the way you relate to your dog. If you don't completely understand that, you'll never be able to train your dog.

For all the free advertising Joel did and still does for “this”, it would really be nice if they offered him a sponsorship or honor his ads in another decent way. (Not to forget the number of his subscribers who for their part promote the product too) Until then… there’s also “Halti” 😂🤣

That dog was just smart enough to eventually realise he couldn't charge/lunge anymore. He still had all the bad intentions and based on the response from the other dogs it wasn't just dominance. He just wants a death battle for fun. The intensity of the corrections and demeanour of the owner was no where near convincing enough to change the mindset of any dog let alone a stubborn bulldog. As Prince indicated, dogs like that will never take a correction from another dog. They need to be made to understand that behaviour is completely unacceptable by their owner, ideally the first time the dog ever eyeballs another with intent. If my dog even looked at another dog like that for no reason he would immediately know he's at risk of being torpedo kicked into oblivion despite the fact I've never laid a hand on him before. They have to know it doesn't matter what their intensity is, yours will easily overwhelm it and any other option is futile.

Another success training the owner! On my walk today with my 30 pound brown dog, Katie, we passed 3 dogs, 2 bicyclists and a skateboarder. We weren't perfect, but in criteria! We even stopped and chatted a bit with the couple with the 2 dogs. The gentleman started talking about how his dogs just want to meet other dogs (because his was pulling and a bit reactive). I said that you never know. He was proud of the gentle leader he had on his Golden Retriever, so naturally I told him about Beckman's videos!!! The kid on the skateboard was nice enough to go past us a couple times and he even tried tossing a treat -- but he missed!!! Haha. Thanks, Joel! We couldn't do this 6 months ago. Keep teaching!

All I think of when seeing dogs in a harness is that you are giving them the best tool for pulling you, on the other end of the leash. Just thinking of sled dogs, the harness distributes the pressure of the weight to make it the least effort to pull.

The timing and criteria for corrections are the 2 hardest things. Didn't realize how much of that is not instinctual until I got a puppy with my partner who has never trained a dog before. It's been years since I've had a puppyd but I think my partner might be the harder one to train lol

We recently started watching your videos during a period we were fostering to adopt a highly reactive, prey driven, easily aroused, anxious 2 year old Pit bull. Of course the rescue only told us he was reactive to hoses and chuck-it sticks. He showed no red flags before we brought him home. We quickly learned his reactivity extended to other animals, tractor, vaccum cleaner, etc. that I reported back to the rescue. Over the 6 weeks we had him I began to implement your leash protocol along with taking a basic obedience class, working a clinical behavioral relaxation protocol, exercise, doing TTtouch, body wrap, using rescue remedy etc. (which I have used on other rescue animals) and started to see some big changes. To help us with our final decision we took him to Doing Right by Rescues (recommended by the rescue) to get some more ideas on helping him. I had shared with her all of his known triggers, what I had been doing with him, and that he had been improving. She stacked one trigger on top of another in an outside setting. I had shared that he was a different, more reactive dog outside. She instigated a major hose reaction by shaking it at the nozzle then frantically calling me to get him off of it when her bits of kibble didn't work. I had been working on redirection & disengagement with increasingly good results. She generated a report which led to the rescue telling us to return him, our home had too many distractions, ie. chicken, horse, deer, etc and she suggested he be in a home without a lawn tractor. We were allowed no say in the decision. Less than 2 days later he was back at the shelter, whimpering, visible upset & confused. We had visited the rescue one time early on in our foster to pick up a few things and have a play date. He was excited to visit at that time. The women that terminated our foster did not have the courtesty to even speak to us and learn the valuable information we had discovered during our foster period. I was told that he had an appointment with a potential adopter later that day. It took the poor dog almost 3 weeks to start to decompress when he arrived at our home, to not jump up at every sound he heard, to learn to self-soothe and to start to focus on me, his main handler. In his short time on this earth, he has been bounced around quite a bit. I counted our home as his 10th placement . I apologize for the rant. (We came to love this dog.) I will continue to watch your videos & learn. I wanted my saga to be a cautionary tale for others. Sometimes when you think you are doing the right thing, it turns out to do more harm than good.

I LOVE the loose leash!!! Fantastic Job! @8:10 the dog went forward creating a tight lead, and the owner corrected. In that type of situation, the owner should have leaned forward creating slack in the lead, and then a quick snap from a loose lead. Never correct from a tight lead. The lead should NEVER be tight, except for that instant of a second during the correction, and then immediately slack again. Also, the owner is still hesitant walking away and waiting on the dog, he needs to just walk away with a SNAP on the lead. Stop waiting on the dog. Overall, Great Job!!! I really liked it.

There is no doubt that what you are saying is true but Joel tries to minimize corrections whenever possible. He could get results even faster if he was correcting with more force but he tries to get as much change in behavior as possible with minimal corrections. He isn’t against corrections but you see other channels that literally do ridiculously violent corrections. Joel just does everything with more finesse.

I find all your training has great insight. In the past I used a gentle leader collar with our poodle and it made a big difference in walking nicely and that dog did not fuss much when we introduced, fit the collar. Now we have an American bulldog and when we fit the halter on his nose, he scratched at it constantly and did not walk. Now we use a prong collar, seems to work, but I would rather use a halter. Any suggestions ?

Hey Joel, I was wondering if you can comment/make a video on how to handle other dogs being aggressive to your own? In one of your videos you say that Prince and Bosco were/are good at handling aggressive dogs, because you made sure that they didn't have any bad experiences until they were a year old, however, I'm not sure how to protect mine in practice. I have a 10-month-old dog that is behaving wonderfully for her age and is really well socialized/friendly with people and dogs. Last week at the dog park a massive dog came up to her (my dog is only about 14 kg) and started aggressively barking. At first, my dog ignored it, and then she tried to evade and walked to me. The other dog followed her and started lunging. In the end, my dog had enough and bared her teeth, snapped, and lunged at the other dog. I called her off at the time (and she obliged right away), as I was scared/surprised to see her displaying a behaviour like that, but in hindsight, I guess it was a healthy reaction after all the provocation? Either way, I felt guilty for not being able to protect her better and not knowing what to do, and also angry at the owner of the other dog, who largely ignored the whole thing and just came over to restrain her dog when things got out of hand already. Do you have any advice?

This is great. I have an Alapaha Bulldog that I got just as the VID hit in 2020, as well, we travel a lot for work, so she's had minimal dog interactions. She reacts just like this to other dogs on our walks. I've been watching your videos, applying your techniques during our walks and I've seen some improvement. I would like to try some of the socialization techniques however, how does one apply these techniques with other dogs outside of a trainer? I've attempted to take her to a dog park, walking her outside the fence, to work on her but people were not kind or understanding of what I'm trying to do and it caused more anxiety for both of us. I appreciate anyone's feed back, ideas and I'm in the San Diego area till the end of August if anyone is willing to meet up/help out.

Great job by the owner. Question - With dominance like this, since it's so much the nature of the dog (the breed in this case), is the goal to ever stop the staring and posturing or just control the lunging and barking? In other words, is there any reason to expect to make a dominant bulldog behave like a playful golden or is just not having freakouts the best to hope for?

Before I ever came to this channel I thought that walking a dog with a lead around it's neck was cruel, and an insult to them, and that they should be in harnesses. I felt that dogs were my equals, so why would I do that to them? I still think that chihuahuas and tiny dogs should be in harnesses, but for certain powerful dogs I wouldn't even be averse to a choke collar now! The head harness is a game changer for many! I still don't see myself as being above dogs in any way, but I do see now that they need rules (the more the better) and that they don't take offence or bear grudges.

This is a great video because you can tell this owner has no clue how to handle a dog. Uncomfortable to watch. I wouldn't want to follow his orders if I was a dog. He's weak. No one, not even a dog, wants to follow a weak leader

I love that you call the mix a "bulldog" there is too much stigma around the term "pit" ♥️

Check back in with the dog and owner in 2 months when this head-jerking method fails to teach the dog what to do properly instead of anticipating his head being yanked.

That dog is GOING to hurt either a person or another dog. Definitely the wrong owner for that dog.

Not if it’s trained properly. Hence why it’s being trained

Someone clearly missed the point of the video... The Guy needed/needs some guidance on how to train his dog, so he seeks help from a DOGTRAINER.

Pathetic. I've watched some of this dude's videos, in spite of the fact that he was a despicable wild animal "trainer" aka prison warden. Some things he says make sense and he seems like a decent dog trainer, but in this case, I see two guys yanking around a poor dog, who showed no aggression. He approached the dobe in a playful manner, even casually turned to look at camera person. How does that demeanor warrant a snout yank? His barking at baseball parks is probably anxiety, not aggression. Write that down.

@@BDTraining Animal abuse isn't fun. Keeping cetaceans captive and then forcing them to perform tricks for the entertainment of ignorant humans is abuse. Fact. Maybe some day, you'll evolve enough to see the reality of the disgusting captivity industry; then we can have a laugh.
