In previous videos, we searched for our perfect boat. Just a few weeks ago in mid-February, we found her. This week we're on our 1976 Tayana 37 (CT37) Taiwanese build designed by Robert Perry. She boasts a teak deck, roomy quarters, and needs a lot of work, and the projects have begun! sirenwilliams@thesirenslog.com
This week, we're headed from Marathon, FL to Lois Key, then on to Key West! In our previous episode, Hal went overboard with the outboard, and was able to dive and recover it the next day, and Siren broke a finger doing weird things with the anchor. This week, we're replacing the backstay that previously broke under sail in the ICW, and we're doing it with the broken finger. We're traveling with large dog, a small tender, an iffy outboard, and our rigging can not be sailed.
We're Siren and Captain Hal. We're surfers, we're fishermen, we're yacht brokers, we're boaters, we're captains, we're divers, we're ocean people, we're Floridians, and that's what our channel is all about!
We do hope that you'll subscribe and follow along!

I love how you two kinda pick at each other a little and argue. That’s what makes it real for me. I’m not sure how myself and the “missus” will do once we get out there. Especially if we buy a boat with a few problems here and there to add a little extra stress in the mix. Really enjoy your editing style and content.

Ohhhh I’m so sorry to hear that. Yeah I think to some people it comes off as disrespect but it just a different respect. We communicate how WE communicate. Siren regular pliers work 10 times better then needle nose pliers.It’s amazing that you will go up that mast and fix things 🤩
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 2 ай бұрын
Hey Mark! Yeah Hal packed the tool bag so I had whatever he sent but I found- both time- taking it down and installing- that both had a place. The regular pliers are too big to pry the pin out from itself so I’d have to start with the needle nose and then once I had it I was much better with the others. It’s tricky. You can’t fully even get a good visual or a good grip on what you’re doing because one hand is reaching around the mast. Got it done though!

I met a fella at a marina one time that had a 54 Irwin. He lived on his yacht. He called the ICW the great ditch. He told me he had 4 cups, 4 plates, 4 spoons, 4 forks and 4 knives. I asked why he said because there will never be more than 4 people on his yacht. Somehow we ended up talking about clothes. He said he had 4 pairs of shorts, 4 polo shirts, 4 t-shirts and 2 pairs of pants and one dinner jacket. He said and they all match. He said in the darkness no matter what he grabs it will all match! He said his clothes were functional he wasn’t in a fashion show! Made perfect sense to me!! I liked that guy. Ohhh was he full of one liners!!! Haha

Of course, it’s harder as a female AND harder when you need at least a few outfits as a broker, plus a few outfits for the job you get when you pull into port, plus something nice to wear out, plus something for dirty jobs, plus at least a couple outfits for just leisure… there’s no way around it! One little last pinch with those channel locks would have closed that carter pin all the way. That looks way to scary for me to go up..
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 2 ай бұрын
Oh believe me I tried and tried. The thing is that the channel locks are too big to close it up because of the width of the tool itself, and there’s no getting around the whole thing to pinch it. Once it’s there, you have to use the needle nose and then it’s just tough doing that. It helps to use both, back and forth for different parts of the process I found.

The only way to shut off a diesel engine is to interrupt the fuel supply. This can be done electrically, w/a solenoid, or mechanically via a cable-actuated cutoff valve and a push-pull knob on the panel. I would first recommend securing the relay socket, then metal zip-tie the relay to the socket. Finally, if your engine has a mechanical shut-off option, install one, and enjoy the peace of mind. T37 is a true classic that will take you anywhere you're willing to go. Looking forward to your adventures. ⛵🏝🌊

Rigging isn’t a “problem” necessarily. The rig should be replaced every certain number of years anyway (than number depending on various factors) so it’s actually routine maintenance. We just bought the boat knowing it was overdue.
@Pocketfarmer1
@Pocketfarmer1 2 ай бұрын
Why do mast always look taller from the top down than from the bottom up? You should probably put a washer on the back stay pin so the cotter pin can’t roll and slip through. Also you don’t really have to bend the ends of cotter pins into the classic fish hook /anchor shape. They are engineered to have the long leg bent about 45º. The more you bend metal the weaker it gets. Good job going aloft.
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 2 ай бұрын
Thanks! We’re 54’ plus the 3’ antenna, so I was sitting at around 53/54’. Yeah he didn’t give me the washer but we will do it when we do the rest of the rigging. We have to replace everything!

@allenclark1914 2 ай бұрын
What a episode, I believe it must be very difficult with all the lines at the top of the mast, trying to keep balance, not tangle up anything while attempting to pull up the stay and fasten it , while trying your best not to drop anything. Well done,, it is enjoyable to watch every episode and anxious to see the work done and start the big adventures.❤
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 2 ай бұрын
Thank you! And yeah you’re totally right. When it came up on the halyard, I had to up clip it with one hand while holding it with the other and then pass it around the mast to myself… it was obviously very possible to do because I did it without trouble, but yeah! I do wish I had longer arms! Hahaha 😂 I’m thinking that maybe in the future, I could have more clips and perhaps pull myself to the other side of the mast and clip off somehow for stuff like this so I can get better leverage on what I’m doing. That was the most challenging part.
@michaelically7893
@michaelically7893 2 ай бұрын
Might I recommend a leash on every tool that you use when aloft working on the rigging. Not only is it a p.i.t.a. when one goes down but a pair of needle nose will go right through the deck if it hits just right.

Solenoid that shuts the fuel off is bad or isn’t getting power to kill the engine. Fairly common issue. And, for the naysayers who want you to haul Hal’s heavy ass up the mast, obviously haven’t had the option to have a person twice their weight as an anchor lol. And when I went back in the video to where you removed the old one there appeared to be a washer under the old one, but it wasn't there when you installed the new cotter pin. Just bringing it up as they might not be good. Be safe and have a good rest of your trip. I'm in St.Pete so you'll be passing by here at some point.

Thanks Rob! That is correct. Hal didn’t think to put one in my tool bag, so it didn’t go on. As soon as I was done, Hal remembered it was supposed to have the washer. However, I’m guessing that it’ll be ok for the time being because we aren’t sailing at all until we replace ALL of the rest of the rigging and the chain plates. I’m hoping it can stay like that just until we go to replace everything and we can just tackle it at that time.

@@TheSirensLog yeah I messed up measuring the stay and foil for our jib furler and it was loose, we had to get out of the yard though so I deferred fixing it. It was loose enough to break the cotter pin while driving the boat back home in some chop. Our brand new Selden furler popped up off the end of the bowsprit like five feet, scared the hell out of me 😂 Fortunately it's fine. Like Brion Toss said, "Keep things taut, or at least not slack." Lesson learned there for sure.

why didn't you re-use the re=useable fitting on the top end of the backstay? No need to go to a rigger again? Also, it would have been a good idea to replace the toggle and pin at the top while you were at it. That looked like a nice Hi-Mod fitting, those things are great.
@TheSirensLog
@TheSirensLog 2 ай бұрын
Which fitting are you calling re-usable? Pretty much everything was exactly what was there except the pin. The pin is definitely new. Not sure if you’ve ever used one of those but once you bend them they’re never straight again. 🤣😂 I don’t have the strength to make that old pin tight enough again to work with and we have boat loads of them. But the bolt itself was the one that was there, only because Hal sent me up with a new one that was too short so I had to put the old one back in, but it’s in great shape so not a huge deal. We have to replace ALL of the rigging anyway, so we’ll be back up there. lol I have a feeling it’s going to be me doing the rest of it too.
@tomntube
@tomntube 2 ай бұрын
@@TheSirensLog You did a nice job, but at minute 1:12 where you are taking the cotter in out, the cable has a Hi-Mod compression fitting, those are reusable. I have used them on 3 boats, they are great. Much nicer looking than Sta-Locks. With re-useable fittings on both ends, you don't need to go to a rigger to get swaged fittings. Just buy a roll of wire, take the compression fitting apart, and put it on the new cable, all DIY. I carry spare cable on my boat, can replace rigging anywhere, anytime if needed. For some reason, you see people using re-useable compression fittings on the bottom and rigging shop swagged fittings just on the bottoms, which sort of defeats the purpose of DIY re-useable fittings.
@sirenwilliams6707
@sirenwilliams6707 2 ай бұрын
@@tomntube I know several of our compression fittings are currently bent, so I think the goal now is to just get new everything. If we didn't, those would literally be the only things now new.

Well, when I took it down when we were in Fort Lauderdale, I didn’t see the washer and it fell and hit the deck. I couldn’t see it. It’s hard to see every detail of what you’re doing because you’re behind the mast and reaching around. Hal didn’t send me up with a washer so it was forgotten about but when we re-rig the boat, we will get one on there. I think it’s probably ok for the moment because we can’t sail the boat yet anyway until we rerig everything.

Obviously, but that doesn’t fix the problem. Also, turning off the fuel is a pain in the ass in this boat so it isn’t a long term solution. If Hal wasn’t a diesel mechanic and didn’t understand how to troubleshoot, you’re right, that’s the first thing we’d do. However, that doesn’t help us located the issue. Hal took ten minutes to find the source of the problem and fixed it permanently. Why would we shut off the fuel if it’s easier to do that?

Selling my house one day to buy the boat was always my deal and that’s what I did and even though it’s our boat, I take full responsibility when I need to.
