Many of us think Omar’s basically one of the best things about KZfaq. But if he gave you free advice you disagreed with, would that be “probrono” ? :)

My wife had the same issues when the lockdown happened, and Zoom calls became the norm. Needless to say, things are almost back to normal, and I inherited the extra lighting we purchased for her :)

I love this! Light is so important! I use a really cheap beginner camera for product photography and it works so well because of the light I also use. LIGHT > CAMERA

Window, flag for the eye highlight and a bounce to get light on the other side of the face would work for a single source lighting situation. Window and some posterboard from wallmart or other store. inexpensive. Lights are better, more control, longer shooting times, not dendant on weather. Elgato lights look good.

If you will be using the window as a regular source of light for KZfaq, just go ahead and frost it.

Timely, thank you! I’ve been in desperate need of “help with faces” for two weeks now! I saw some “portraits” taken by a street photographer who works in black and white and many of them had such gorgeous (to me!) depth to the faces, very 3-D, you feel they could pop from the frame. My faces too often look like flat featureless pancakes. Can’t help that it’s low-light challenged x-t30 and most are inside restaurants or shot around twilight, I already have noise reduction at -4 (moreover I shoot raw) and use wide apertures like 1.4, 1.7, 2, 2.8. I still think there must be some skill I haven’t developed in terms of mastering light or something - being able to make the most of my environment. Seeing how backlit / hair light / rim light helps define and separate a person is useful. If I don’t have a speedlight, maybe I should use my cell phone to add light? Open to suggestions!

Even in street photography, the subject must be positioned to be in good light, which has everything to do with relative size and positioning of light to the subject. When they are not lit well, there are no camera settings to compensate. Don't take photos of subjects that are not correctly lit and you will eliminate a lot of boring/bad photos. I remember thinking when I first started photography that a good photographer should be able to take a good picture in any setting, but in time learned that it's not true. They need good light- good photographers either find it or create it. If you can't buy a speedlight, I would start focusing on learning how to identify flattering or interesting portrait light sources. It's not just about how bright it is, but which direction it's coming from, relative to your subject.

Thanks! But doesn’t the window light obscure your monitor light? That would give me a headache. BTW your sister is beautiful- you sure she’s really your sister?!😆
