This o'l girl has gone many a mile, and with a little love will go many more. She reminds me of my dad's o'l chevy 3100 that quit him one day on the way home from work, he had Bullwinkle towing, tow it home for him to our house, and there it sat in the lean to shed he built for it for 25 years. When I was 11 or so I used to climb into it and sit on a stack of old phone books, and pretend I was a on a journey across America I drove that thing a million miles and it never moved an inch. Years later he made it run and gave it to me. I went to every state in the country in that old truck and Alaska. 3 motors 3 girlfriends, and more may pop tires than I can remember. I'm 72 now and remember it like yesterday. I look forward to the many miles we will ride this old sweetheart. Be well.

I have an oil tank & battery box that's been sitting around for years you can have if you want. I bought it at the Denver swap meet years ago when I was building my shovel. I ended up running a horse shoe. It now has a 6 speed overdrive & a softail tank & primary. I don't think I'll need it anytime soon. It looks like shit, but not too rusty.

Basket? First bike after ETS, a Bonny in a box. Painted and polished by yours truly. Had to trade some '56 chev parts for a cherry oil bag and all new rubber from Limey Kurt. I've owned a 78 shovelhead for many years now. It started life as a shrine model 74 cubic inch, and over the years, it's unrecognizable as a flh shriner. The only original parts are the tanks, frame, engine, and transmission. It's like a caterpillar transformation into a butterfly or maybe a moth 🤔 hahaha. Good luck with your new project. Once you get the shovelhead itch, it spreads quickly, and there's no cure for it. You just adapt and learn to live with it.

Great video nice project Nothing like getting old bikes going I would not say that’s a basket case at all A true basket case or as you said to you it’s the definition of a basket case Comes in a basket not 90% or more together just the tank off lol Have a few old shovels Latest is a 76 fxe frame with baskets full of parts An 81 flt shovel that’s completely a bike not in a basket and a 76 fxe complete bike to be rebuilt Oh and a few nitro s and an rd and and and lol In baskets not just needing resto Can’t wait to see what you do with it

I hear you about a basket case, as that was the early definition of one, but evey single thing has to be address on this project so although it is not in boxes it might as well be. At least with this you got a better idea of what parts are there and what is not. Thanks for commenting.

I also found one of these bikes, although it’s listed as a 1979, and it has the 80-inch Shovelhead engine. I found it in an abandoned house in Pennsylvania. The story is that the original owner was a small-town policeman. For reasons unknown, he parked the bike in 1980 after only 3300 miles were on it. I’m guessing the reason was because the starter went bad, and this bike came without a kick starter. The guy died in 2009, leaving no wife or kids. The house was condemned by the state, and was demolished about a month after I removed the bike. That’s right, I stole it from a dead guy. If I hadn’t, it would’ve been bulldozed into the basement of the house with everything else. But anyway, after putting a new starter on the bike, I could never get it to run properly. Carburetor problems were a daily occurrence, until I just drained the fuel, removed the (new) battery, and locked it away inside a garage with a dozen or so other bikes that need work of one type or another. Such a shame, as it’s really a nice bike to ride when it’s running correctly… which has happened exactly twice. I used to be one of those “Harley nuts”, but anymore I don’t have the time or patience for that kind of crap. That’s why I bought a Honda.

I'm thinking this one is also an 80 after having a better look at it. Never cared what anyone rides. As long as they are riding. What a great story and another one saved. Thanks for commenting.

A true definition of "basket case" is some thing in a basket or basket's surely? Not a complete bike with just the tank missing?
@itsmytimeletsgo
@itsmytimeletsgo 20 күн бұрын
Maybe its not the true definition of a basket case, but it needs a complete rebuild on every piece. That being said its all in how you see it. Seen lots of bikes like this refered to as basket cases.With some basket cases, all in boxes, you have no idea on what you get. At least this one gives me a good idea of whats there. Not in a basket, but been through a fire and then sat outside neglected for years. Wouldn't make much difference if it was in boxes I wouldn't think. Thanks for commenting.
