What a moving story! She is a grateful daughter, who loves her mother, and has grown the family bussiness! The Singaporean government should implement rewards for the best hawkers, since their food has become a Unesco World Heritage Treasure! People who visit Singapore, have to go to a Hawker Centre, otherwise, it is like they have not seen the REAL Singapore!

Dont count on the gov, lip service only. For the young ones who take the lead from some gov hype, they are on their own. Really a let down esp when you put up SG Hawkering to Unesco, what are they doing for the real aging hawkers who with them retiring actually demolish this hawker heritage of ours.

This is an example of small local SMEs loved by true locals. Hard work is only a small part of success. The new citizens virtually never patronise the hawker centres. They much prefer their own food from their own country opened by their countrymen. So how does one take this to the next level, obtain funding to expand and scale up? How can the government help our local SMEs by creating the environment required to grow? Our food scene which is an important component of our *cultural confidence* as a nation is fast eroding. In the malls, we see a proliferation of ever increasing foreign franchises rather than local businesses, with more young people preferring foreign than local. What strategies and tactics can we as a nation learn from Japan and Korea, both having managed to supplant their many food franchises here?

The best part is that if the hawker fails to pay the $600 “consulting fee” in time, he will be charged 12% interest or “such higher rate as may be determined from time to time by the Consultant” for any outstanding amount owed - aka “Ah Long” style of “O$P$” but minus the pig’s head and splattering of red paint on walls. In any case, given that hawker stall rentals at SEHCs have skyrocketed and SEHCs have used “Ah Long” style of management operating these hawker stalls, as revealed by Mr Seetoh and warned by Mr Yee earlier in Parliament in 2012, one can only conclude that Vivian’s ministry has failed to keep watch on these SEHCs “very, very closely”.

Hawkers are passionate about their cooking. Food court owners are passionate about their profit. Cooks at hawkers stall are owners. Cooks at foodcourt are employees. The difference between the two is in the food. A simple test you can do is to eat.

I hope she is doing it for herself & not for her mum, filial piety is one thing but to get into a career where you wont be happy in the long term is setting up a trap for oneself. Some parents would fight like mad not to have their children be in these kind of industry because its back breaking work, they "sin ku" themselves pay for the children's higher education but dont wish the kids to follow their footsteps. I hope it works out well for their family.

“They (social enterprises) operate the new hawker centres like a hard core commercial Food Court management system. Hence, I am seeing some issues that raises some concerns,” Mr Seetoh said. Contract agreements from hawkers at SEHCs revealed that on average, they are paying about $4000 a month on stall rentals. Then there are a number of hidden charges written inside the contract agreements, like imposing a Gross Turnover Profit percentage, charges for crockery washing, collection and return and even a “brazen clause” that hawkers need to pay a “consultant” $600 a month to have them spot check their food quality and operation.

A couple of netizens asked why the programme was only open to polytechnic and ITE graduates and not National University of Singapore (NUS) or Nanyang Technological University (NTU) graduates as well.
