She's got me building nightstands. Pt. 1

This week i'm building a fun weekend project for the wife. Two nightstand/end tables are needed for my kids room. Its constructed from birch plywood and well as some barn wood accents to come:)

A tip. While the glue is still wet, wipe the excess and sand the outside of the miter a bit. The sawdust and glue will help fill in some of the gap the outside of the miter. The Samurai Carpenter has a video explaining it.

Good call on leaving the wood natural on the inside it's a great contrast. I see you've learned the "keep the camera shakey to hide the gap" maneuver as well!

night stands huh. Well I could be worse lol! Their looking great got my own side job this weekend full closet half cubby holes other half hanger poles out off cedar. At least I got paid lol.....oh yea and the sanding block I did turn out great thanks again

looking good so far...and youll always know theres a gap on the one miter..bwhahahaaa..j.k. thats how I am now you better have a good I touch it up and cover it up I'll always look at that corner or money or whatever it is I have the Gap and think damn there's a gap LOL looking forward to the barn wood haven't seen a barn wood project in a while

MDF, dowels and glue would have saved you a lot of work and you would'nt had to have the piece of wood in the corners. On the cut, i put some water based polyurethane and sand until it is as glossy as the rest. Very nice and clean shop. Most US hobbyist's have more tools than a european hardware store. I think we may appreciate more to do things by hand.

They are coming out really nice, should be great when finished up. The mitres seem like overkill seeing as you ended up painting them though? I use butt joints on plywood boxes which work out fine so long as you fill and sand the edges with filler/putty/etc first. After paint, you can't tell. Looking forward to seeing these finished, oh, and with the width of these boxes, your bedroom must be huge! :-)

+Mario Cappellano (The Woodfather) I never had much luck making plywood end grain look seamless. The room is actually kinda small but these will double as storage as we don't have room for any other furniture in the room.

The inside-outside contrasting colors is great! Honest question: why mitre the panels when you knew you were going to paint? In what way will you be able to spot the difference?

good question, I debated on this a lot but my reasoning is because there is no top that sits on the case and there for no good way hide the end grain of the plywood. It was important to me that the case looks as seamless as possible like it is all one peice and I think the miter was the best way to accomplish that.

a decent paint with a foam roller. keep the coats thin and take you time of coarse;)

It looked like your over arm dust collection on your table saw was disconnected in the last shot. Was it disconnected while you were cutting pieces in the earlier shop? I was considering doing mine like yours but it looked like you were getting a lot of dust in those shots. That would make sense if you didn't have it connected. Does it normally work pretty well?

I have access to alot of rough ash at the moment, but I mostly buy my rough hardwood at "black river woodworking", Walter is great to deal with and has pretty competitive prices, he sells by the bdft, i think he stocks most of the common species in 12' lengths

ROUGH SAWN MAPLE at Home Depot???? Since when? I have only ever seen rough pine at my local HD. They have maple, oak, and poplar, but it's all surfaced 4 sised (3/4") and super expensive.

+sooth15 I know! I buddy texted me last weekend and said it was there so I drove right out and got some. Cheap to, 11 bucks for a 1/6/8ft board. I picked through the whole rack and it's not great stuff but will do for most of my projects.

they will be (with the legs) 16" wide 26" high and 30" wide. I made them over size as they will be used as my sons dresser for his cloths as well.

Joint compound. Works great to fill gaps on pieces that will be painted.

Couldnt you just butt-joint the boxes and do the edgebanding with miters as appearance? That may have saved you some time
