James, I find all your “lesson” vidéos terrific. This one though, at least for me, was extra special. Your explanation caused me to listen to this song differently and to attempt on my own to dig a bit deeper with my own ears into a few other Stone’s songs. Thank you as always.

I play in a Stones tribute band and I always look for your videos to check my approach on different songs. Thanks for this one - it confirms my suspicion that I was playing the intro wrong (in open G), although I had all the other open G stuff nailed. I'll turn that intro riff over to the other guitarist in the band, who's always in standard. Again, thanks!

Even by your standards, this is a killer video. Your explanations give insight not only into the specific song, but playing any song. As others are making requests, I would also respectfully request a demo on NY's "Dead Man". Many thanks!

I love that there a bunch of pickers arguing on a message board but you have a platform- with legions of followers you've earned - to set the record straight. This is hugely helpful btw when you explain the thinking behind the playing on certain songs and how two guitar parts can weave together. (Also why we can't get enough of guest appearances by your kin) Thanks!

you shouldn't have to prove it. you have the earned authority and you're qualified as a Rollin' Stones guitar subject matter EXPERT. But thanks for showing us exactly why the guitars on that song are arrainged that way. It's really no mystery---it's just the usual standard / open chord combination that produces that clearly distinctive driving ringing Rollin' Stones guitar sound.

Hi James,..I saw the Stones in Philly in 1981 and Mick was playing some guitar then. Blew me away cuz I didn't know he played. Maybe he could've done one of the open G parts while Ron did the slide stuff and Keith did the "Chuck Berry" licks.. Just givin' this a tink... Glad you feel better. Keep on rockin'!

It's why most bar bands suck at playing Stones songs. There is just no substitute for playing in an open tuning. I don't think people even realize that "Wild Horses" is in open G. It sounds totally different. Not playing "Jumpin' Jack Flash" in open E (studio) or open B (live - open G with capo on 4th fret) makes a big difference too.

I remember when this type of guitar playing became noticeable to me. It's similar to the way you described Young Turks....just hitting the bass notes. That was so foreign to me in the 80s when I was so hung up on playing the full chords, which I couldn't do or didn't feel comfortable doing. Thanks for the informative flashback.
@HumGuitar7 жыл бұрын
Great explanation. Thanks, it sounds logical to me, and sounds correct. I agree, I don't like many of the live versions during the Ron Wood years.
@stephenpinder19039 жыл бұрын
I saw the Stones do this one in 81, and Keith did indeed do the standard tuning intro - with his black Tele I think - and Ronnie did the open G part, even though that process between the two usually seems to be reversed when they play a combination open and standard tuning song. I also agree the live version isn't very good, but it sounded half decent in Lexington, KY in 81. They did a superb Tumbling Dice that night too! Mick's choice of football attire was unfortunate, and Bill Wyman almost moved a couple of times. Charlie was immense.

I agree, except one thing. It sounds like Keith is playing both parts (like in Brown Sugar) and Ronnie plays the solo at the bridge. Those slide parts you mention are Keith just sliding his finger in Open G. My ear says it's clearly Keith in standard tuning (left channel) and also Keith in open G (right channel).

Stones combine Open G and Standard Tuning on a number of songs. I agree with explanation. I think Open G is my favorite alternative tuning. In studio Keith probably did both parts.
@ARIZJOE9 жыл бұрын
Gosh, you have a good ear for music if you can figure out all these odd tunings, keys, and chord progressions. I do like the live versions because Keith and Ronnie play them like jazz. That's one of the things that separates them from other bands.

(Great vid, as usual.) I don't know - this 1981 video appears to show Keith playing the open-G version very much like you had demoed it in open-G in your other post kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g7J1e8mY2ta6l2g.html. But this 2006 version has Keith adding more of the Chuck Berry-like fills and it's probably in standard tuning, and Ronnie definitely appears to playing in standard tuning as seen on the riff kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rbZ_q5eKtrulg4U.html. Per usual, it's probably a curious combination of tunings between Keith and Ronnie, and even Keith has been known to change the tuning that he uses for songs across years. BTW, I really liked this Stones track from the first time that I heard it. Nice groove and it rocks. It's the early-80's "Start Me Up" era Stones, one of the few bands that can claim "eras" across a storied career, and that '81 tour was a memorable one and Ian Stewart wouldn't be alive for very much longer. Thanks.

Yo. I tend to agree with you about this. That is by using my limited knowledge. Your explanation made sense, but never would've gotten there by myself. Do you just realize it in your head or did you play around with it on guitar?
@jazzboxrecordings34149 жыл бұрын
One possibility is he tuned his high E down to D. That way he can get the Open G chord forms and the slide part. Mick Taylor did it all over Exile. Just a thought, your example was great.
@jamesjames92759 жыл бұрын
Jazzbox Recordings It's possible, but why? He didn't need to play both parts on one guitar. It's two separate tracks.

Sorry to chime in so late but Jagger played guitar on this song in the studio so it might be him doing the open G parts. I always thought it was Keith doing both as you mentioned until I saw that Mick played guitar on this as well.

Ronnie never plays open G, not even in slide mode (I don't think he is allowed to, whereas Jagger unfortunately is : ). Also agree that the original recording must be in standard. I LOVE Ronnie's pedal steel break in the middle, but I don't like how the band is thrashing this slinky country rocker live. So, like a few Stones tracks, the authoritative version is the one on ER. IMHO
