I just saw "She Said". I don't think that any BAD review more closely reflects my exact feelings about a film. "Spotlight" and "All the President's Men" and even "The Post" are all more dramatically compelling than "She Said". I also completely agree with Christy's comments on Jennifer Elhe. I thought that she would get a best supporting actress nomination for her work in Steven Soderbergh's "Contagion", but she was ignored.

What Spotlight understood is it dedicates as much narrative time to the journalism as it does to the journalists and the community of Boston. This felt like it was only interested in the key facts, almost playing out like a filmed adaptation of an audiobook or Wikipedia page.

So true. Spotlight showed the impact of the journalist investigating this story and people different perspectives. I just remember the scene where the grown man didn’t think anything bad happen at the church despite being molested. It was so impactful.

In defense of hallways and their cinematic potential: the brilliant and by now hopefully classic film 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days by Christian Mungiu plays in hallways, in bathrooms, around kitchen and restaurant tables, in backyards, and over garbage chutes. It is just as cinematic, if not more so than Monument Valley.

I read this book co authored by both journalists before I knew it was going to be a movie and, while I was moderately interested in this film when I saw the trailer a few months ago, I remember thinking that there's more tension reading about these events and how the story broke than watching it happen. I think with everyone involved here it no doubt rises to the occasion based on a great cast but maybe a theatrical film can't convey these events the same way a book or even a documentary can. I still might end up watching this someday but can't say I was surprised to hear that some of it didn't land for you guys. Great review, as always!

I’m a little confused? It sounds like they just left out Ronan Farrow and how he was really the one who did the heavy lifting in regards to exposing Harvey and it sounds like he’s not in the movie at all?? Are they only crediting the women who took down Harvey?? And what is the point of that? Have not seen the movie yet so don’t know just asking?
@BreakfastAllDay
@BreakfastAllDay Жыл бұрын
They briefly mention the fact that Ronan Farrow is also working on this story, which puts pressure on them to get theirs out.
@jeanne2b2b22
@jeanne2b2b22 Жыл бұрын
They may not have had approval to portray Ronan Farrow. He has this own series of podcast's intervening Weinstein victims. Also I think Ronan was a driving force because he is gay and could not honey-pot blackmail him. Sadly his sister is a survivor of incest by Woody Allen who married Ronans other sister, and yet still works in Hollywood.

Meanwhile, this is the same industry that knew what Weinstein was doing for years and protected him. Never forget Matt Damon threatening The New York Times in 2004 not to publish the story that would have revealed this and The New York Times burying it the same way that they buried the Holocaust.

@@thefilmseeker It's not really irrelevant, because it shows how The New York Times being so willing to protect Weinstein was not new and, tellingly, the movie doesn't want to get into that to be truly provocative, compelling and vital in the way films like Spotlight, Zodiac and All the President's Men are.

It's a weird flex to me to make a scripted drama out of this, considering how complicit the industry was in enabling Weinstein. If there's a competent documentary on the same subject, I think I'd much rather see that.

Maybe this is indecent of me to say, but it does feel incredibly jarring to see a movie be released as a 'feminist film' about a reporter who has been pretty consistently transphobic. Like, how can something claim to empower women if the person it's based on has so flagrantly dismiss the experiences of other women?

I liked this a whole lot more than you apparently even though it was my 3rd film on a long movie day. The Jennifer Ehle/Samantha Morton scenes especially of course but there's other people in there playing themselves beside Ashley Judd. Maybe it's my lack of actual 'how the press works' knowledge that helped me get sucked in. I spoke to the guy running our screening and he said he'd earlier attended one where Rowena Chiu and her husband were there and speaking on it. Apparently the driveway scene was really a few hours long. Man, that must've been uncomfortable! I'm thinking of seeing it again if I've got time. And to rewatch Spotlight. And see the Ronan Farrow film.

Wasn't too invested in seeing it So thanks for the review. It seems interesting to me this new trend of an incident happening a few years back then documentary about said incident is released and it catches the public's attention, and then a few years after that a film regarding the same event is released. I feel like there is no need for these kind of films when the non fictional version of then can be just as compelling. If that makes sense. Wonder if Miramax is still around. If so wouldn't it be interesting if they produce a film about the downfall of their co- creator?

this movie is very "slighted" in its narrative. Like it feels it lacks real substance. As Alonso said, its like its mostly people talking without any depth and some scenes are just far fetched. I mean there is no way those scenes could happen in reali life. You could sense that. Other than that the narrative is good. It is focused and tries to be authentic and dramatic at the same time. Especially as it gives some background story on a few characters. But it does not capture any journalistic procedure as Christy noted. And after a while you get a sense that these women, or essentially the movie is not about trying to get a story on Harvey Weinstein but basically trying to prove his guilt. Which is why I said it feels slighted, not really carrying much weight either in terms of journalistic process or any attempts to analyze the story as it develops. She said ends up being somewhat of an incomplete movie. It has some facts and it does try to build some drama . But it is unable to really lead its story to an accurate and complete conclusion by lacking any analytical insight and the sense of impartiality. That could have made it far more emphatic and thought provoking. I give this a 6.
