You kill off one warlord, ai’m sure they will overthrow the emperor. So the emperor had to lure the snitch out, which was a’rou who had enough malice to be a opportunistic but enough baggage to not look after her behind.

At that time Ruyi was sent to cold palace, his reign was not strong enough, he suspected and so did the empress dowager, but as he said they all had clan powers. A’rou even said to jia she has the empress and gao to back her up. At that time - A’rou’s father was also doing well in helping with the floods. Close to the end - even the Powerful mongolians couldn’t go against him even when he was killing off their daughters.

Oh yeah, it did.....because all this time, the Empress was already secretly screwing her over.

Hailan(the girl who had to kneel in the snow) is from a less influential background and is only a first class female attendant (3 ranks below Noble Consort). Ruyi (the one who supported Hailan) comes from the same clan as the former empress, the current Empress Dowager (the emperor's foster mother) is disapproving of her. Going against Hailan&Ruyi is the Noble Consort, who has a powerful family. hence, it is difficult for the Emperor to call her out directly. 1. The emperor helped to cover Ruyi&Hailan by lying that he allowed Hailan to retrieve the red charcoal from Ruyi. As he is the emperor, obviously no one will doubt him even if Noble Consort insists that Hailan stole the red charcoal. 2. By punishing the servant, the emperor is warning not just Noble Consort, but everyone else who intends to pull any kind of tricks.

And he punished the noble consort by not going to her for 3 months cause she is “sick” 😂 😂

@L N anyone who knows Chinese history of Qing dynasty would agree with what Kelly said. The complexity in the royal palaces are all the same. No matter it's in China's forbidden city or in Versailles in France. The characters in this drama are all real in the Chinese history.

Hailan was being interrogated by the imperial consort for supposedly stealing charcoal out of her residence. During those times the accused is to kneel for as long under question by her in this case superior and it is made worse with the cold. It implies that she mostly had been under questioning for hours.

I believe she also had the bottom of her feet beaten

Its sad cause i am watching the beginning of the series and he is so sweet and so in love with Ruyi but i know it doesn't last and he comes to just abuse her and treat her so badly while taking her for granted. I really come to hate him. What a journey this show is oi

@@therealfinnaspring8585 the show is so good that I hate this Emperor BUT! Sister!!! The ending is so satisfying! I don't know if you had already watched the ending but yeah, for me it's very satisfying and it serves this Emperor right!

@@shielatv22 spoiler.. I actually saw a clip of the ending before i saw the rest of the show. Kinda sad i had it ruined for me but it made me curious to see how it all came to be. He definitely deserved to be alone its just like everyone that entered that palace suffered. Its like a glittering golden cage that the birds don't realize is permanent till they already trapped. Ruyi had such a sad life though lost so many children and taken for granted by the emperor and framed so many times. Maybe i will feel happier when i finish it all the way through i just wish she had a happier ending and that the emperor idk at least contracted leprosy and suffered real bad physically too lol. It is a great show thus far tho

He needs act like that to protect Ruyi. because the Consort and the queen are so jealous, the emperor doesn't want the others to hurt Ruyi because of his love to Ruyi.

After Emperor passed their was no more harems allowed. He loved Rui in the end when it was his end time he know he had something he lost but he could be with her in the after life.

Guifei niang niang is the title of Noble Consort (guifei) Hui (the one who started all the drama) appended with the honorific "niang niang," which is a respectful term of address for imperial concubines over a certain rank who are the mistress of their own palace. She gets away with a lot because at this point her family is fairly influential at court and punishing her means having to deal with backlash from her brother and father. Xian-fei, or Consort Xian, is the Emperor's "true love" in that she's the one he wanted for his principal wife, but she's the niece of the previous reign's Empress who fell into disfavor right before the death of Emperor Yongzheng. Which is a long-winded way to explain that as the niece of a disgraced Empress AND as a Consort one rank below Hui guifei, she's sticking up for Second Attendant Hailan purely out of sisterhood/loyalty. In this series she's the protagonist. Hailan changzai/First-class Attendant Hailan is the lowest ranked of the three women involved in the incident, and her lot is quite bad because she resides in the palace of the highly favored Hui guifei while she herself is not favored. Doesn't pop up in the clip but this isn't the first time she's been bullied or maltreated due to her low rank, if I remember right her charcoal supply around this point was so inadequate that Xian-fei is keeping her afloat by sneaking her supplies. She trusts Xian-fei to do her best but doesn't want to implicate her which is why she started confessing to the crime before the Emperor showed up to see what was going on. Emperor is stuck between a rock and a hard place here because he knows Xian-fei wouldn't be defending her younger sister (not biological, a term of respect for an older/higher ranked imperial concubine) like this if there weren't something else going on, and he also knows that Hui guifei isn't above slightly abusing her rank like this if she feels she's been slighted in some way, but as mentioned earlier, he can't out and out punish her without there being some ripple effect to the workings of the Imperial Court. Best he can do is damage control. Don't know if this helps or not lol. If you like the plot/characters, I do recommend this series as well as the Story of Yanxi Palace, which is a different series set in the same reign (Qianlong Emperor), with a different protagonist and slightly different interpretations of the women in the Imperial Harem. I'm gonna be honest and say I much prefer how the Empress is characterized in that series. Xian-fei is also really neat in that one.

@La' Mariposa it's not so much the plot as it is understanding etiquette and protocol between the ladies so you can catch the subtlety, it's what makes rewatching so interesting 🤎

The evil one hates Ruyi and knows that Hailan is her friend. She mainly just wants to hurt Ruyi and also she is frustrated that she cannot have a child and decides to put that frustration into harming others.

@@tuttiflooti Actually Ruyi was filmed before Yanxi, and the books it was based on were published years before. It was only aired after Yanxi because the show tried and failed to be released on major networks due to censorship. The producer of Yanxi is a notorious opportunist who capitalized on the buzz of Ruyi by intentionally creating a show set in the same period but with the characters turned upside down (heroes to villains and vice versa), and rush released it on streaming platforms while Ruyi was stuck in censorship limbo.

Using the patent for the telephone as an example, alexader Graham bell was not the first person to build a successful phone; but the actual creator got stuck in traffic on his way to patent the technology so bell got there 3 hrs before. The relevance comes from the fact that Bell got all the credit because he got to the post office first. In the same way, even if ruyi was filmed first, Yanxi palace got to the proverbial post office first and therefore ruyi is just yanxi palace but from someone else's pov.

It's actually kind of funny because in all the series set in this reign that I've watched so far, the Emperor is always characterized as tolerating this Noble Consort for the sake of not rocking the political boat but not having much genuine affection for her. Things do get better for Xian-fei and Hailan-changzai later in the series if you keep watching

He didn't though. The Noble Consort was not his choice to be in his harem, at the wife selection he passed her up and gave her 100 in silver and sent her home. He was forced to take her in by his father, in exchange to have Ruyi as his second wife. She only got her Noble Consort position due to her maiden clan, the Gao's being of importance for engineering of the water dams and supplies. He often refers to her as flighty and ill tempered. In short, he doesn't like her, but plays the politics. He also knows she has the Empresses backing. What he did here was try to send a message to them to stop conspiring together against Ruyi and the others. Unfortunately, they redouble their efforts because of his interference. Empress was not offended by his behavior, the clear message was for the NC. He even threw in the 'well your sick, so no bed serving for 3 months' as additional punishment.
