This video gives an introduction to design reinforced concrete beams for shear. The video focuses on the cross-section right before failure and explaining how different parts of the beam contribute to the shear capacity. The contribution of the concrete and steel to the shear capacity is discussed. This explanation is then combined with a full-scale concrete beam load test.

Superb video,Dr Ley.Dr ley when a secondary beam is resting on a primary beam, generally there is a tendency to fully release the moments at that junction fully or partially while analysing by Staad Pro.But after a monolithic casting full rotation can never take place thus leading to generation of moment along the width of the primary beam.But partial rotation can take place at that junction but there is no formula by which we can calculate the partial moment releasing factor,so is there a experimental procedure by which we can measure the actual moment that is being generated at these beam to beam junctures and can calculate the degree of rotation taking place and calculate the partial moment releasing factor .

Kushal - I wouldn't be too worried about this. As long as you provide a viable load path for your structure then it will always carry at least that amount of load before it collapses. I know this sounds crazy but this is structural resiliency. As more load is placed on a beam then it will just crack and possibly cause the steel to yield and then distribute loads to other parts of the structure. This will keep happening until the entire structure reaches it limit and then it collapses. We just need to apply reinforcing with enough ductility and proper detailing to transfer the load. This means that if we get the exact load path to failure wrong or the stiffness wrong during our analysis then it doesn't matter! The structure will at least carry that load and will likely carry more. You can learn more by checking out my video on structural resiliency. You can also read up on plastic design methods. I cover some of this in the steel videos that I have posted. Thanks!!!

Dr Ley,Thank you very much for such a detailed answer.I will go through the videos mentioned by you and then get back to you. Sir,I will be submitting my Ph.D thesis on geopolymer composites in a few weeks. I am looking to apply for post doctoral positions abroad,if you could give me some advice on where to apply and whom to approach,I would be really grateful.

Hello, great video and I was wondering what the load weight was before it cracked and weight at one inch vs two inches; 5000 lbs, 10,000 lbs? I want to make a tiny cabin out of aircrete. I thought instead of buying to much lumber for the raised base I could use my own cast I beams. In addition I think I could make my own deck or deck boards from aircreate.

Hi Dr. Tyler! First at all, thank you so much about your videos, are very illustrative and... I'd like to learn more about the "dowel action". How do the dowel force arise?
@TylerLey

When the concrete tries to break in shear there are many things that contribute to the strength. One thing is the rebar itself having to fail in shear. This is called dowel action. The shear capacity of the rebar is not specifically taken into account in the calculation. Instead, it is included in several of the other terms. Does this help?
