About Sheepdog Response:
Sheepdog Response was founded by Green Beret, Special Forces, Sniper, and former top 5 UFC Middleweight, Tim Kennedy. Tim was also the co-star of Hunting Hitler on the History Channel, and more recently, Hard To Kill, on the Discovery Channel.
People face threats of violence every day, ranging from large-scale terrorism to one-on-one assaults. Most people are unprepared, unequipped, and untrained to respond effectively. This weakness in the flock allows the wolves to attack with great ease and success.
The answer is not more laws. The wolves don’t follow them. We must give the good guys the tools they need to effectively respond to violence. The more Sheepdogs we can train to be truly ready to respond to a mass shooting, terrorist attack, violent mugging or home invasion, the better the chances are that the bad guys will get what they deserve and the good guys will survive. Most people sign up for martial arts or weapons training expecting to learn realistic self-defense, and few get it…
We have developed a curriculum that addresses the skills you need to successfully respond to threats

There are many ways to incorporate these two responses into one seamless drill. The important thing is that you make these movements second nature because there's nothing worse than a rifle that's not ready to do its job!

When I was in the Air Force our remedial actions were similar but took slightly longer. We used the acronym SPORTS. S: Slap magazine upwards P: Pull charging handle and hold O: Observe the chamber R: Release the charging handle T: Tap forward assist S: Squeeze trigger Your way seems much quicker and more efficient in an actual fire fight. Excellent job!

Learned SPORTS in the Army as well. But one of my drill sergeants told us to forget that and taught us something like this method

Tap, rack, bang/squeeze will fix 90% of malfos. At night under NVGs, one may not see “observe” anything fall out, nor is their time to look for it. If the tap, rack, bang doesn’t work, it’s time for remedial or transition to pistol. All this “type 1, 2, 3” malfunction stuff goes out the window for a shooter under stress, under NVGs/night, on the move. SPORTS makes sense, but it’s going away for the same reasons.

For a little more info on clearing malfunctions beyond tap,rack,bang check out some of Kyle Lamb's stuff on clearing jambs, double feeds etc. I'm sure Tim covers this too I just haven't seen everything he's put out. As a fellow combat veteran I have great respect for these guys passing on their hard won skills. As Tim demonstrated having a teammate load your mags with interspersed dummies & running the drills is a good way to sharpen the edge. Stay in the fight!

Man, this is so useful. Such a great drill to practice. There’s always a need for “what if” “overcome and adapt” 🇺🇸

This drill is essential when shooting from a canal with a 2 foot berm and people are shooting at you. Cover, tap, rack, bang. Don't shit your pants, just remembered your training. Often better to change position and if you have a turd of a standard issue vietnam era magazine with little to no spring tension load 20 in a 30. Remembered you won't always have access to the best equipment. Keep your setup cleaned, lubed and well cycled. Last thing you want is a "click" in a combat or self defense scenario

Question: At 5mts, wouldn't it be faster to transition? Thanks
@valiant545

Depends. A simple tap rack bang could be done as fast if not faster than drawing your pistol. But what if its a far worse malfunction? Personally I'd go to my sidearm if it was that close and that dire out of principle. I'd hate to misjudge my malfunction (you wouldn't have the time to look) and be screwed, than instead draw my sidearm which SHOULD be working properly. Any other situation or distance and I'd probably just focus on clearing the rifle. Just my two cents, take it as you will. I'm a random guy on the internet.

Love the block of instructions Tim, only thing i'd add (and yes I know who tf am I to question etc etc) but if I had to do remedial action after immediate action does not remedy the issue, I would ATTEMPT to lock the bolt to the rear before removing the source of feed, that way I dont have a potential bad magazine in one hand, and a shit rifle in the other hand with nowhere but an armpit or the ground to place that mag if i dont have the luxury of a mag holster. Tap rack bang dont work, then id place weapon on safe, lock bolt to the rear, remove magazine, remedy issue, replace source of feed, send bolt home and get back on target. Lemme know your thoughts!

A concern I would see is that if for whatever reason you slip off the charging handle or for whatever reason the bolt doesn't lock you now have 2 rounds jammed together and that's a big issue you created after having the initial issue.
@James_Edward59

Do you not realize he was locking the bolt to the rear on his remedial drills which is why after he loaded the new mag he would hit the bolt release to send it home. He was just literally locking the bolt to the rear so quick and smooth it seemed like he was just racking the charging handle but he was actually pulling it to the rear and pushing in the bolt release to lock it back.

Tap rack bang is an incorrect remedial action for clearing malfunctions and an ar-15. The proper procedure is sports. Slap pull observe release tap and shoe. If you just tap back bang you're going to cause double feeds. 1 quick video and I can already see that this trainer is utterly useless.
